11 June 2024 Sports

From Wayne Mausser:

Colin Rea allowed just three hits while working seven innings for his longest outing in eight years, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.

Jackson Chourio and Willy Adames went deep for the Brewers, who had gone without a homer in their last five games. Milwaukee’s last homer before Monday came a week ago when Rhys Hoskins went deep against his former team in a 3-1 loss at Philadelphia.

Rea (5-2) threw 85 pitches, struck out four and allowed one run, on a third-inning homer by Alejandro Kirk. The last time Rea had gone seven innings was on June 7, 2016, when he was pitching for the San Diego Padres in a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

Spencer Horwitz’s two-out single brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth before Brewers second baseman Brice Turang made an outstanding play to end the game. Turang went far to his right to field a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. grounder up the middle and throw him out at first.

Trevor Megill worked the ninth for his 10th save in 11 opportunities.

Kirk opened the scoring by sending a 2-1 pitch from Rea over the left-field wall. The 405-foot drive was Kirk’s second homer of the year, and first since April 28.

The Brewers tied it in the bottom of the third on Chourio’s homer to left-center. Chourio’s homer was a solo shot rather than a two-run blast because José Berríos (5-5) picked Jake Bauers off first immediately beforehand.

Adames then put Milwaukee ahead with a 417-foot drive, also to left-center. Adames’ 10th homer of the season tied Hoskins for the team lead. He had entered Monday with just two hits and one RBI over his last seven games.

Milwaukee extended the lead to 3-1 in the sixth. Brice Turang drew a leadoff walk, advanced to third on William Contreras’ single and scored on Adames’ sacrifice fly.

Berrios struck out four and allowed three runs, five hits and one walk in 5 2/3 innings. That ended a streak of six straight games in which Toronto starting pitchers had allowed no more than two runs. The game included an unusual moment in the fourth inning when Guerrero fouled off a pitch and lost his grip on the bat, which went flying and got stuck in the protective net above the Blue Jays’ dugout. After repeated attempts to get the bat down between innings failed, the Blue Jays managed to get it down before the start of the sixth inning.

LHP Yusei Kikuchi (3-5, 3.48 ERA) will pitch for the Blue Jays when the three-game series continues Tuesday. The Brewers haven’t announced their starting pitcher. First pitch is at 7:10 from American Family Field.

In other Brewers news LHP Robert Gasser (left flexor) is getting a third opinion on his injury. Manager Pat Murphy expressed pessimism regarding the possibility of Gasser pitching again this season.  Murphy said RHP Joe Ross (lower back strain) had a setback and won’t be ready by June 17, which had been Ross’ projected return date.  OF Garrett Mitchell (left index finger) went to the Brewers’ Arizona Complex League team for a rehabilitation assignment.

There were no other games in the NL Central Monday. The Brewers lead the Cubs, Cardinals and Reds by 7 games and the Pirates by 7 ½.

There were no games in the Midwest League Monday. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (36-21) are the road tonight, taking on the West Michigan Wildcats (29-28). First pitch is at 5:35 CDT.

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders fell in both games on Monday to close out the Michigan trip against Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. The Dock Spiders lost game one 10-8 to Battle Creek, in a game that stretched over three days due to a weather delay. Then in the second game and the regular schedule Monday game for the Dock Spiders against Kalamazoo, The Dock Spiders fell 13-9. With the losses, Dock Spiders moved to 5-9 on the season.

Dock Spiders are back in action at home at Herr-Baker Field tonight against the Madison Mallards, first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 CT. Tuesday is scout and stand whiffer night at the ballpark, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are invited to participate in a pre-game parade around the warning track and are encouraged to wear their vest, and uniform, and bring a troop banner. As well as tomorrow is Bang For Your Buck Tuesday with 107.1 The Bull, enjoy hot dogs, 16 oz. Pepsi products, and 16 oz. domestic draft beers (for those of legal drinking age) for $2 each.

In the Stanley Cup Finals Monday night the Florida Panthers took a 2-tames to nothing lead over the Edmonton Oilers, winning at home 4-1.  The series shifts to Edmonton on Thursday.

The Bucks brought back assistant coach Darvin Ham on Monday, who was a part of the staff that led the organization to an NBA title in 2021.

Ham left the Bucks in 2022 to join the Los Angeles Lakers as their head coach. In 2 seasons, Ham compiled a 90-74 record, highlighted by an appearance in the Western Conference Finals in his first season. The Lakers dismissed him as their head coach on May 3.

Ham first joined the Bucks in 2018, coming from the Hawks alongside former Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer. Budenholzer was fired as the Bucks head coach in 2023 and was hired as the head coach of the Phoenix Suns earlier this offseason.

The upcoming season will mark the first time Ham has worked alongside Doc Rivers, who was hired as the Bucks coach midway through the 2023-24 season. The Bucks finished the year 49-33 and lost to the Indiana Pacers in six games in the first round of the playoffs.

Top seeded De Pere is on to the division one semifinals after knocking off Menasha in a pitcher’s duel, 2-0.  De Pere will face Westosha Central in the division one semifinals on Wednesday at Fox Cities Stadium at 2:30 p.m.

The Green Bay Packers are expecting a capacity crowd for this year’s Packers Family Night, set for Saturday, Aug. 3.

Tickets will go on sale for $10 each later this month, on Wednesday, June 26, at 10 a.m. Tickets will be sold exclusively online at Tickermaster.com, not at the Lambeau Field box office.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Players will take the field for warmups at 7 and line up on the field for practice 30 minutes later.

This is the 23rd year for the public scrimmage inside of Lambeau Field. The Packers promise “kid-favorite” foods at concession stands as a new feature this year. There will also be music and a fireworks show to end the show — a Family Night tradition.

There’s a limit of 10 tickets per purchase. Everyone entering the stadium will need a ticket, regardless of their age. Tickets are mobile-only. You’ll also be able to purchase a mobile parking pass for $5 when you buy your tickets. The parking pass is required if you want to park at Lambeau Field for Family Night.

Proceeds from the sale of parking passes will go to Meijer’s Simply Give program to provide food to local pantries.

Group sales of 50 tickets or more can be arranged through the Packers ticket office by calling (920) 569-7501.

The Packers add that no refunds will be given if there’s inclement weather unless all stadium activities, from 5:30 on, are canceled.
