Jake Rogers hit a three-run homer to cap an eight-run fifth inning, Tarik Skubal earned his eighth win of the season and the Detroit Tigers rolled to a 10-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.

The eight-run inning was a season high for the Tigers, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Gio Urshela and Zach McKinstry each contributed a two-run single. Riley Greene finished with two doubles and an RBI.

Skubal (8-1) allowed one run and five hits while striking out 10 in 6 2/3 innings. The strikeout total was his second-highest this season. He fanned 12 against the New York Yankees on May 5.

He has reached double-digit strikeouts six times during his career.  Skubal’s fastball was clocked as high as 101.7 mph.

Milwaukee starter Bryse Wilson (3-3) was charged with seven runs in 4 1/3 innings. The NL Central leaders hadn’t allowed double-digit runs since April 28.

Brice Turang’s run-scoring triple in the seventh ended Skubal’s shutout bid. Skubal, who was making his 13th start of the season, lowered his ERA to 1.92.

Detroit scored twice in the first inning, highlighted by Greene’s RBI double.

Urshela drove in the first two runs during the Tigers’ fifth-inning outburst. McKinstry’s bloop two-run single was followed by Andy Ibanez’s RBI single. Rogers’ opposite-field drive off Hoby Milner, his fifth homer of the season, made it 10-0.

The Brewers are back home tonight hosting the Blue Jays. Probable starting pitchers are right-hander Jose Berrios (5-4, 2.80 ERA for Toronto against Milwaukee right-hander Colina Rea (4-2, 3.53 ERA).  First pitch is at 7:10.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Twins beat the Pirates 11-5, the Cubs over the Reds 4-2 and the Cardinals downed the Rockies 5-1.  The Brewers lead the Cubs, Reds and Cardinals by 6 ½ games and the Pirates are 7 games out.

In the Midwest League Sunday, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at home over Quad Citries 6-5. There are no games scheduled today.

An offensive explosion on Sunday for the Dock Spiders at Kalamazoo setting a season high for hits and runs, allowed the Dock Spiders to take game one over Kalamazoo 11-2. With the win, the Dock Spiders moved to 5-7 on the season. 

The Dock Spiders will play two games today, wrapping up their Michigan trip, with the resumption of Saturday’s game at Battle Creek from the top of the second inning starting at 12:35 CT. Then the Dock Spiders will bus to  Kalamazoo for game two with the Growlers beginning at 5:35 CT. 

In the NBA Finals Sunday night, he Boston Celtics took a 2 games to nothing lead over the Dallas Mavericks with a 105-98 victory.at home.  Former Bucks star Jrue Holiday led the Celtics with 26 points and Jaylen Brown scored 21 to lead Boston. Mavericks star Luka Doncic led the Mavs with 32 points. The series shifts to Dallas for game 3 on Wednesday.

Ernie Els won for the second straight week on the PGA Tour Champions, winning the American Family Insurance Championship on Sunday when tournament host Steve Stricker missed a 2 1/2-foot putt on the first hole of a playoff.

Els and Stricker shared the second-round lead and each shot 3-under 69 in windy conditions to finish at 12-under 204 at University Ridge. They both birdied the par-5 16th and parred the final two holes.

The Principal Charity Classic winner last week in Iowa, Els became the first player to win two straight events on the 50-and-over tour since Stricker last year in the Regions Tradition and Senior PGA Championship. Els won for the fifth time on the senior tour.

Stricker has 18 Champions victories. He’s winless this year and has gone nine starts without a victory, the longest drought of his senior career.

Cameron Percy of Australia was third third at 9 under after a 67. Doug Barron (66), Stephen Ames (67) and Thomas Bjorn (69) were 8 under.

On the PGA Tour, Scottie Scheffler won for the 5th time in 8 starts as he took the Memorial Golf Tournament, Jack Nicklaus’ signature event. Scheffler held off runs by Colin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin to shoot a final round 74 and beat Morikawa by 1 stroke. Only 5 players shot under par Sunday.

On the racing circuit, Will Power pulled ahead for good on the 49th of 55 laps and beat teammate Josef Newgarden by 3.2609 seconds on the 14-turn, 4.014-mile course to win for the first time since the Detroit Grand Prix on June 5, 2022. Power has a five-point lead over reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou as he seeks his second championship in three years.

Power ended a 34-race winless streak and moved to the top of the IndyCar points standings.

For the first time in program history, the Waupun softball team won a state championship, defeating Mosinee, 7-2, for the Division 2 title.

After falling in an early 1-0 hole, Addison Braun evened the score in the 4th inning with an RBI double. Kylee Pluim gave the Warriors the lead in the same inning with a sacrifice fly.

Rowan Harder extended the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single in the 5th inning. Then, Braun opened the flood gates with a grand slam, making it a 7-1 ball game.

Mosinee managed to score twice in the bottom of the 7th inning, but the lead was too much to overcome.

Waupun has only appeared in the state tournament twice before this year (1985, 2015).

Earlier in the day, Laconia fell in the Division 3 championship game, with Prescott winning, 3-1. Laconia upset previously undefeated Mishicot on Friday to advance to the championship game.

In Division 5, Oakfield fell to Pacelli, 4-3, in their championship game. It was the Oaks 17th appearance at state in program history.

Kaukauna’s 108-game winning streak came to an end in the Division 1 state semifinals at the hands of Milton, who rallied to defeat the Galloping Ghosts, 5-3.

It is Kaukauna’s first loss since May of 2021. They had won 3 straight Division 1 state championships.

Neenah lost 7-6 in overtime to Middleton in the inaugural boys lacrosse state championship match on Saturday in Sun Prairie.

In Division 1, the Kimberly girl’s soccer team advanced to its first trip to state since 2011 with a 4-0 win over D.C. Everest on Saturday. Senior Emily McCarthy scored a hat trick in the win.

In Division 3, Notre Dame fell short, 2-1 to Plymouth. Lacey Fabry scored the lone goal for the Tritons.

In Division 4, defending state champion Kiel defeated Lourdes Academy/Valley Christian, 6-0. Lydia Vandermeer and Addison Vogel both scored two goals.
