5/7/24 Town Square Gallery Presents Artist Rachel Kmecheck

7 May 2024 News

GREEN LAKE, WI, — Town Square’s Lobby Gallery is featuring the works of Wisconsin-native artist Rachel Kmecheck throughout May. The exhibit is open to the public Monday to Friday, 9 am – 5 pm, and Saturday, 9 am – 3 pm at Town Square Community Center, 492 Hill Street, in downtown Green Lake.

Rachel Kmecheck’s deep love of medieval art, techniques, and architecture led her to the Intaglio printmaking technique, beloved since the 1400s. Her art has taken inspiration from medieval tile patterns and stained glass; her current inspiration is mythical creatures. This technique is truly a labor of love, as it can take up to 10 hours to create just one printing plate.

“It starts with etching the design onto a plate, followed by inking the plate and placing it on a printing bed,” Rachel explains. “With the weight of the rollers and careful pressure, the ink is transferred onto the waiting paper. In some cases, I enhance the prints with delicate watercolor touches, adding another layer of depth and beauty.”

Rachel enjoys the intricacy that goes into making the printing plates, as she feels it pays homage to the artists before her who used this time-honored technique. She is often working late into the evenings while listening to her favorite compositions.

“There is no greater joy than the moment I pull a fresh print off the press for the first time,” Rachel says. “It’s a blend of exhilaration and anticipation, as I witness the transformation from ink and plate to a tangible piece of art.”
