THIRD SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT NEAR THE UW OSHKOSH CAMPUS

Oshkosh Police are investigating a third incident in a little over a month where a woman encountered a man unknown to her standing in her bedroom. The latest incident near the UW-Oshkosh campus occurred early Sunday morning. A woman returned to her residence in the 800 block of John Street and found a man standing in her bedroom –at the edge of her unoccupied bed. She screamed and left the residence. When she returned the man was no longer there. She described him as being approximately 6 foot 2 inches tall, wearing skinny jeans, a black shirt, and a ski mask. Police are asking those that live in the area who have video surveillance cameras to review the footage to see if the suspect is on it. They also recommend locking all windows and doors, make sure video surveillance cameras are working and to call them to report suspicious situations and people around the campus area. Similar incidents were reported in the 800 block of Vine Avenue on April 1st and the 1200 block of Wisconsin Street on April 14th. In both those incidents the suspect was wearing a mask.

NAMES RELEASED IN SERIOUS FDL COUNTY CRASH

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials have released the names of the two drivers involved in a traffic crash in the Town of Taycheedah last Friday afternoon. Seventy-seven-year-old Ronald Birschbach of Fond du Lac was ejected from his vehicle during the collision on County Highway Q. He was flown to a hospital. The Sheriff’s reconstruction team determined he was heading east on County Highway Q near Stenz Road. Thirty-four-year-old Jeanna Giese of Fond du Lac was heading west on County Highway Q and performed a left-hand turn into a residential driveway in front of Birschbach’s vehicle. She was not injured in the crash. Neither alcohol nor speed contributed to the accident. The accident was reported at 4:26 pm.

WASHINGTON COUNTY DEPUTY CONFRONTED BY ARMED MAN

While responding to a loud music complaint late Saturday night a Washington County Sheriff’s deputy was confronted by a man with a weapon. The deputy arrived at the residence in the Town of Farmington and observed a bonfire in the backyard where the music was coming from. While he was walking up the driveway a 23-year-old man rounded the corner of the residence with what the deputy thought was a flashlight. The deputy identified himself as a law enforcement officer and came to realize he was being illuminated by a flashlight mounted on a weapon. The deputy drew his service weapon and told the man to put his weapon down. The man complied saying he didn’t realize he was a deputy. The deputy noticed signs of impairment. The man failed several sobriety tests including a preliminary breath test that put his blood alcohol content at .179 or more than twice the legal limit. The man was arrested for possession of a firearm while intoxicated. (Washington County Sheriff’s photo).

SENTENCING HEARING SET FOR FDL MAN CONVICTED OF MURDER

The 58-year-old Fond du Lac man convicted of killing Jacquelyn Jo Rooney will be sentenced on June 21st. During a five day jury trial in Fond du Lac County court in February a jury found Gary Davis guilty of first degree intentional homicide, mayhem, and hiding a corpse. The 51-year-old Rooney was reported missing on November 12th of 2022. Her car was found outside a bar and when Fond du Lac police went to her residence they discovered her body under blankets and debris. According to the criminal complaint she and Davis were dating and both lived in the same apartment building.  Investigators learned the two were having relationship problems and Davis had physically attacked her at some point. Davis faces the possibility of life in prison. Judge Douglas Edelstein will decide whether Davis will have the possibility of parole.

RIPON MAN ARRAIGNED ON RECKLESS HOMICIDE CHARGES

One of the five people charged in the overdose death of an 18-year-old Ripon man was arraigned in Fond du Lac County court Friday. Maison Springton pled not guilty to felony charges of first-degree reckless homicide as a party to a crime, harboring or aiding a felon, hiding a corpse as a party to a crime, and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and resisting or obstructing an officer.  He will be back in court for a scheduling conference next Monday. According to the criminal complaint on April 7th of last year the victim took a pill believed to be Percocet at a Ripon home and overdosed. He was taken from the residence and left on a sidewalk. The pill contained fentanyl.

BGCTC RIPON FACILITY

Officials with the Boys and Girls Club of the Tri-County Area say they had reached a pivot point where it was time to break ground for their future facility in Ripon. About 100 individuals including donors, staff, board members, city and state leaders attended the ceremony last Tuesday. Club Director of Development Ashley Bartol says they were excited to reach this milestone in the project. She says they’ve raised about $12.3 million of the $13 million needed in their capital campaign.  The nearly 40,000 square foot 2-story facility will include a child care area and a 6,000 square foot trade skills room. Ashley Dodson will be the Ripon Site Coordinator. She says child care is something the area needs and frees up people to do other things with their time. Club officials anticipate a summer 2025 opening for the Ripon site.

WAUPUN FIRE AND EMS STAFFING STUDY

Waupun City Administrator Kathy Schlieve says a Fire and Emergency Response Staffing Study confirmed a few things they already suspected. The call volume for both fire and EMS services has been going up while the number of paid on call volunteers has declined for the fire service. She says their fire department which also handles calls for three townships has two full-time staff the rest are paid on call volunteers. Schlieve notes they have no one under the age of 33 working for the fire service. She says adding an Emergency Medical Responder Program in 2022 has helped when their contracted ambulance service, Life Star, is handling calls for its 9 jurisdictions in a roughly 200 square mile service area. Schlieve says more conversation is needed and discussion about possible staffing remedies. The Waupun Common Council will discuss the study’s finding at their Committee of the Whole meeting on May 28th.
