William Contreras went 3 for 5 with four RBIs and hit one of Milwaukee’s five homers off Martín Pérez in the Brewers’ 10-2 blowout of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.

The NL Central-leading Brewers won two of three from the Pirates before beginning a season-long, nine-game trip Friday at Houston. The Brewers also will visit Miami and Boston before coming back home May 27 for a four-game series with the Chicago Cubs that marks ex-Brewers manager Craig Counsell’s return to Milwaukee.

“I like the guys, I do,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “I really like them. They care. They’re hungry. I love hungry players.”

Gary Sánchez, Sal Frelick, Joey Ortiz and Jackson Chourio also homered off Pérez, who gave up 11 hits and nine runs before leaving with nobody out in the sixth inning. Chourio’s homer traveled 441 feet and Ortiz’s blast went 425 feet.

Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen went 3 for 4, homered and scored both the Pirates’ runs.

The Brewers tied a franchise record for homers off a single pitcher in one game. They also hit five home runs off Cincinnati’s Chris Reitsma in 2002 and Cincinnati’s Hunter Greene in 2022.

This was the Brewers’ first five-homer game since a 9-0 rout of the New York Mets on April 4, 2023. The Pirates hadn’t allowed as many as five homers in a game since July 6, 2022, when they gave up six in a 16-0 loss to the New York Yankees.

The Brewers nearly went deep a sixth time. Pirates center fielder Michael A. Taylor reached his left arm over the wall to rob Willy Adames of a potential homer in the eighth inning.

Contreras put Milwaukee ahead for good with a three-run homer in the third, and he also singled in the fifth and tripled in the seventh. Contreras has gone 17 of 36 during a nine-game hitting streak and is now hitting .359 with a .434 on-base percentage.

Before Wednesday, Pérez had allowed just three homers all season while working 45 innings.

Five days after allowing just two hits over six shutout innings in his major league debut, Brewers starter Robert Gasser (2-0) gave up just one run in five innings while allowing eight hits. Gasser struck out two and walked one.

The team said Gasser is the first pitcher in Brewers history to earn a win in each of his first two major league appearances.

Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins says he’s planning to travel with the team on its nine-game trip that begins this weekend even as he’s on the injued list after straining his right hamstring Monday. Hoskins is expected to miss two to four weeks.

The Brewers are off Thursday before beginning a three-game series at Houston. Freddy Peralta (3-1, 3.63) will start for the Brewers on Friday.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Cubs beat the Braves 7-1, the Diamondbacks nipped the Reds 2-1 and the Angels downed the Cardinals 7-2. The Brewers remain 1 ½  games ahead of the Cubs.

In the NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals the Celtics beat the Cavs 113-98 to win their series 4-1.  In the Western Conference Semifinals, the Mavericks won at Oklahoma City over the Thunder 104-92 to take a 3-2 lead.

In the other Western Conference Semifinal game toonight Denver plays at Minnesota with the Nuggets leading 3-2.

The NFL released the 2024-25 season schedules for every team on Wednesday. The Packers will have nine home games for the first time ever and eight away games, including the season opener coming in Brazil against Philadelphia.

The Packers-Eagles game was announced in April, but the rest of the schedule was revealed Wednesday. Here’s what stands out:

  • The Packers host Miami on Thanksgiving night.
  • Only once does Green Bay have two straight road games — Week 14 at Detroit (the Thursday after Thanksgiving) and then a Sunday night game at Seattle.
  • The Packers’ home opener is Week 2 against the Colts.
  • For the first time since the NFL went to a 17-game schedule in 2021 the Packers have nine Lambeau Field home games. They did have nine home games in 2022 but one home game was moved to England (New York Giants).
  • The “gold” package ticket holders normally have two regular season games, but with the additional home game this season the package received a third game, which is the final regular season game against the Bears. The other “gold” package games are against the Vikings (Week 4) and Lions (Week 9).
  • The Green Bay season ticket holders games are in order: Colts, Cardinals, Texans, 49ers, Dolphins and Saints.
  • The Packers play four straight weeks in primetime: Week 13 vs. Miami (Thursday), Week 14 at Detroit (Thursday), Week 15 at Seattle (Sunday) and Week 16 vs the Saints (Monday). Green Bay’s other scheduled primetime game is the season opener.

According to City of Oshkosh court documents, Fox Valley Pro Basketball Inc. has missed two property tax payments for the Oshkosh Arena.

Court records show that Fox Valley Pro Basketball Inc. has not made a property tax payment for the 2023 tax year, for an amount due that totals over $300,000. There is another payment due at the end of this month and another at the end of July. The missed payments were due at the end of January and the end of March.

The future of the Oshkosh Arena remains uncertain, as the building is now up for sale. On Tuesday, local leaders expressed their hope that a new owner will energize an area the city was hoping would be a major destination for entertainment.

Economic experts say for the arena to be successful; it needs to be booked at least 200 days per year. They’re hoping the new owner will have entertainment experience and the knowledge to make that happen.

The arena is also home to the Wisconsin Herd, the G-League team for the Milwaukee Bucks. The Herd, two years ago, signed a lease through 2026, with the possibility of extending through 2028, playing 24 games here per season. There’s no price tag attached to the listing on LoopNet which is a commercial real estate marketplace.

However, those hired to sell the property are advertising it as 80 thousand square feet of entertainment space and the key anchor of the Sawdust District redevelopment.

Since being built in 2017, the arena has faced challenges, ranging from its owner filing for bankruptcy, to being shut down temporarily, because of fire code violations.

The 2024 PGA Championship starts Thursday and runs through Sunday at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. It’s the fourth time Valhalla Golf Club has hosted the PGA Championship. Brook Koepka won last year’s tournament, finishing at -9 under, two strokes ahead of Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler. The total purse is worth $17,500,000.

The UW-Oshkosh Titans will host Saint Benedict (Minn.) today in their regional opener k after earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

UWO got off to a hot start to the season with a program record 25 straight wins, and went on to claim the WIAC regular season crown.

The Titans also had some ups and downs.. Oshkosh suffered three one-run losses against Whitewater, including a pair last week in the conference tournament.  First pitch is at noon.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay introduced its next men’s basketball coach — a hire that is raising eyebrows in the college sports world.

The Phoenix called a news conference to introduce Doug Gottlieb as coach. Gottlieb is a sports talk radio host whose only coaching experience is in the Maccabiah Games, an international multi-sport event for Jewish athletes. But he has been connected to the game for decades as a player and broadcaster.

Gottlieb played at Notre Dame in 1995-96 and at Oklahoma State from 1997-2000. He led all Division I players in assists in 1998-99 and ranked second in 1999-2000.

He has worked as a broadcaster for most of the last two decades with stints at ESPN, CBS Sports and FOX Sports. He currently hosts “The Doug Gottlieb Show” on FOX Sports Radio.

Gottlieb also has ties to the state of Wisconsin. He was born in Milwaukee and is the son of Bob Gottlieb, who coached Milwaukee from 1975-80. Gottlieb said those connections make it “even more amazing to get this opportunity to come back to Wisconsin and live out my dreams.”
