FDL STANDOFF INCIDENT
After a six-hour standoff with law enforcement a 34-year-old Fond du Lac man who took refuge on the roof of the International Paper building in Fond du Lac was taken into custody. It ended with the deployment of a less-than-lethal 40-millimeter sponge round and chemical rounds-pepper spray. The situation Tuesday began when the man, who was wearing camouflage clothing flashed what appeared to be a law enforcement badge in the Fleet Farm store. He fled on foot as police arrived and ended up climbing up an exterior ladder to the roof of the International Paper building. Police were familiar with him and wanted him on several crimes including retail theft, criminal trespass and a probation and parole warrant. He had been exhibiting escalating behaviors. Employees of International Paper sheltered in place while more police officers and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies arrived. They were then evacuated. During the standoff the male armed himself with rocks, metal rebar stakes, and improvised weapons. When the man was taken into custody, Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue took him to the hospital for medical evaluation.
