From Wayne Mausser:

Sal Frelick homered for the first time this season, Joe Ross and three relievers combined on a three-hitter, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Pittsburgh’s Nick Gonzales hit his first homer of the year, and Connor Joe also went deep for the Pirates.

Gonzales’ last homer was July 2 against the Brewers. Frelick hadn’t homered since Aug. 7 of last season, against the Pirates.

Frelick also made two diving catches in center field. He caught a sinking liner from Jared Triolo to end the second and made a play on the warning track to rob Andrew McCutchen of an extra-base hit in the eighth.

Joe homered with two outs in the ninth off Trevor Megill to cut Milwaukee’s lead to 4-3, but Megill struck out Jack Suwinski to earn his fifth save.

Ross (2-4) struck out six while allowing two hits, two runs and one walk in five innings. Bryan Hudson pitched two innings and Elvis Peguero worked the eighth without allowing anyone to reach base.

Brewers pitchers had retired 15 straight Pirates before Joe’s homer.

After each team left runners on the corners in the first inning, the Brewers took the lead for good in the second.

The Brewers collected five straight hits against Quinn Priester (0-4) during one stretch in that inning. Joey Ortiz got things started with a one-out double before Frelick lofted an 0-1 slider over the right field wall.

Oliver Dunn, Jackson Chourio and Brice Turang then delivered three consecutive singles, with Turang’s hit driving in Dunn. Christian Yelich’s two-out single brought home Chourio to make it 4-0.

Gonzales cut Milwaukee’s lead in half with his two-run shot in the fourth.

Priester lasted six innings and gave up four runs and nine hits. He struck out five and walked two.

Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins went on the 10-day injured list with a strained right hamstring. The Brewers promoted utilityman Owen Miller from Triple-A Nashville to fill Hoskins’ spot on the roster.  Meanwhile, Brewers LHP DL Hall (left knee) threw 35 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday.

LHP Martín Pérez (1-2, 3.60) starts for the Pirates and LHP Robert Gasser (1-0, 0.00) pitches for the Brewers as this three-game series concludes Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is at 12.10 from American Family Field.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Braves shutout the Cubs 7-0, the Cardinals edged the Angels 7-6 and the Reds beat the Diamondbacks 6-2. The Brewers lead the Cubs by 1 ½ games in the division while the Pirates are 6 ½ out and the Reds and Cardinals, 7 games behind.

In the Midwest League the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at home over Beloit 7-3 to improve their record to 21-12.  They play again this afternoon at 12:10 at Fox Cities Stadium.

In the NBA Eastern Conference Semi Finals Tuesday the Knicks won at home over the Pacers 121-91 to take a 3-2 lead in their series.  In the Western Conference Semi Finals Denver won at home over Minnesota, 112-97,  to take a 3-2 lead in their series.

Tonight in the Eastern Conference tonight Cleveland plays at Boston with the Celtics leading 3-1 in that series.  In the Western Conference, Dallas is at Oklahoma City with that series tied at 2 games each.

The countdown to the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay is officially underway after a symbolic handoff of hosting duties from Detroit took place Tuesday morning in Milwaukee with a ceremonial football eventually making its way up to Lambeau Field.

While crowd estimates for Titletown’s draft next year of 250,000 people haven’t been raised in response to Detroit’s turnout, no one is counting out Packers fans for showing up in a big way in 11 months.

Aboard the Lake Express Ferry in Milwaukee, Governor Tony Evers received the football from Detroit. With guidance from a bike brigade, the ball made its way up the east coast of Wisconsin and eventually received a warm welcome from young Packers fans.

The fans showed up to Ray Nitschke Field like they do each summer to bring players to and from training camp practice, but this time the bikes were to escort that football to Lambeau Field and usher in Green Bay’s once in a lifetime event.

An unveiling of the NFL Draft countdown clock in the Lambeau Field Atrium culminated the day’s events and provided a large reminder the clock is ticking on what’s to come next year.

The East Central Conference track meet was held Tuesday.  The Ripon boys finished third with 83 points.  Winneconne won the meet with 212 points.

On the girls’ side the Tigers finished 6th with 56 points. Kettle Moraine Lutheran won 165 points.

Green Bay director of athletics Josh Moon has appointed Doug Gottlieb as the 10th head coach in Phoenix men’s basketball history.

An introductory press conference to announce Gottlieb as the next Phoenix head coach will be held on Wednesday at the Kress Events Center at 10 a.m.

Following his college playing career, Gottlieb went on to a successful professional career with stints all across the globe including the USA, Israel, Russia, and France. Internationally, Gottlieb traveled to Israel and won a gold medal as the MVP for the United States team at the 2001 Maccabiah Games. He would later return to the Maccabiah games as a coach, alongside Bruce Pearl for Team USA at the 2009 Maccabiah Games, as well as the 2017 and 2022 Maccabiah Games, where he helped lead the US to a gold medal in Jerusalem.

Caitlin Clark’s ‘s WNBA got off to a rough start in a 92-71 road loss to the Connecticut Sun, Tuesday night.  Clark struggled shooting early in the game but got in a rhythm in the second half, scoring 13 of her 20 points in the second half on 4-of-8 from the floor after the break. She was also 6-of-6 from the foul line.  She also had 10 of the Fever’s 25 turnovers.
