THREE VEHICLE CRASH UPDATE
Dodge County Sheriff’s officials say an 84-year-old Markesan man injured in a three-vehicle accident last Wednesday afternoon remains hospitalized with serious injuries. Dewick Rinehart was driving his compact SUV north on State Highway 33 when it collided with a pickup truck that had slowed for a vehicle turning into a private driveway. His SUV then crossed into the southbound lane where it collided with a Mitsubishi. The SUV ended up in a ditch where it rolled over multiple times. Rinehart was taken to Marshfield Medical Center in Beaver Dam and was then flown to Aurora Medical Center in Oconomowoc with serious injuries. Fifty-year-old Tracey Gabel of Beaver Dam, who was driving the Mitsubishi, was also taken to Marshfield Medical Center where she was treated and released. Forty-six-year-old Donald Marshall of Randolph was driving the pickup. He wasn’t hurt.
SPARTA MAN CONVICTED OF FIREBOMBING CHARGES
A 26-year-old Sparta man has been convicted of charges from the firebombing of a Fond du Lac residence in July of 2016. Elliot Schneider was convicted Monday of damage of property by use of explosives, first degree reckless endangering safety, and felony bail jumping. Firebombing charges stem from an explosive device that detonated causing damage to a residence and endangering safety of those inside on July 9th, 2016. Co-defendant Jonas Johnson was previously convicted of related charges and is awaiting sentencing. Sentencing for Schneider has been set for May 24th. Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney says, “The defendant’s dangerous and violent actions threatened the safety and security of numerous occupants of the home. We are grateful injuries were not more serious.”
FDL MAN ARRAIGNED FOR HIS ALLEGED ROLE IN MURDER
A 21-year-old Fond du Lac man was arraigned yesterday on charges for his alleged role in the stabbing death and attempted robbery of 33-year-old Ashley Ann Calo of West Bend. During his appearance in Fond du Lac County court Dawson Miller pled not guilty to the charges he faces which include being party to a crime of conspiracy to commit felony murder, being party to a crime of armed robbery with use of force, and four other charges. According to the criminal complaint 20-year-old Annaka Trudell of Fond du Lac stabbed Calo with a kitchen-type knife during an argument in a fast-food parking lot. Trudell and Miller allegedly made a plan to steal drugs from Calo by pretending to want to buy pills from her. A witness who saw the argument and stabbing said Calo didn’t realize she had been stabbed and drove away from the scene. As she was driving she passed out. Police responded to that car crash on North Main Street on February 13th. An autopsy revealed she had been stabbed at least twice and once through the heart and lung.
FDL MAN SUSPECTED OF IDENTITY THEFT AND CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A 43-year-old Fond du Lac man who had unsuccessful runs for City Council and State Assembly is suspected of identity theft and credit card fraud. Lawrence Foster is charged with five counts of identity theft for financial gain. Foster is accused of making charges to credit cards he set up using his business partners’ names. His business REVCOM is involved in the information technology services field. Other allegations include making over $26,000 in unauthorized withdrawals from the bank account of the ARC of Fond du Lac. Foster also allegedly borrowed money but didn’t pay back another business. The ARC terminated their IT service agreements with REVCOM last August. Foster will make his initial appearance in Fond du Lac County court on May 28th.
BUFFALO ON THE ROAD IN WAUPACA COUNTY
Waupaca County Sheriff’s officials are advising the public of a buffalo on the roam. It was spotted on County Highway E North of Ogdensburg yesterday. They recommend using caution when driving on the roadway in the area. If you see the buffalo, do not approach it as they are unpredictable, and report the location to the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office at 715-258-4466. Refer to case number W24-07297.
ACORN RIDGE MOTEL CHANGES OWNERSHIP
After two decades of owning the Acorn Ridge Motel, Linda and Eric Johnson are ready to retire. On May 3rd, Mark and Mae Wilton of Green Lake became proud new owners of the well-established business, located at the intersection of Highway 23 and 73 in Princeton. The Johnsons have built a reputation for friendly service and impeccably clean rooms. Eric Johnson is also the director of the Green Lake Hospitality Group, which operates the Green Lake Golf Package. Linda Johnson played a large role in the County’s Visitor Bureau. “Linda and Eric are leaving us with very big shoes to fill,” Mae Wilton commented. “We’re so fortunate that they will be staying on to help manage the motel over the summer, giving us the opportunity to learn all we need to know and allowing for a smooth transition of ownership.” Mark and Mae are heavily involved in the community and have years of experience in hospitality. “Owning Acorn Ridge has been a labor of love,” Eric Johnson remarks. “We’ve built such amazing relationships with our guests over the years, some of them have become like family to us.” (Photo of the Johnsons and Wiltons at closing).
WAUTOMA CWD MEETING
The DNR will host a public meeting with the Waushara County Deer Advisory Council to provide information on chronic wasting disease in Wisconsin, local testing efforts and disease surveillance options being considered. The meeting will be held at 6 pm next Monday in Wautoma. In February, the DNR confirmed the first positive test results for CWD in a wild deer in Waushara County. The deer was found dead in the Town of Wautoma, which is within 10 miles of the Marquette and Portage County borders. The DNR began monitoring the state’s wild white-tailed deer population for CWD in 1999. The first positive test results were found in 2002. The meeting next Monday will be held at the Wautoma World War II Memorial Building at 6 pm.
LAKE BUTTE DES MORTS CAUSEWAY PROJECT
Governor Tony Evers recently signed a $2 million contract for a rehabilitation project on the Interstate 41 Lake Butte des Morts causeway between State Highway 21 and U.S. Highway 45 in Oshkosh. The project begins on Tuesday, May 28th and is expected to finish in early October. Both directions of I-41 will be reduced from three to two lanes across Lake Butte des Morts. In addition, the U.S Highway 45 ramp to southbound I-41 will be closed for the majority of the project. Sheet Piling Services of Custer, Wisconsin is the Prime Contractor. Project improvements include removing and replacing structure approaches for northbound and southbound I-41 bridges over the main channel of Lake Butte des Morts and replacing and locating a 100-foot section of cable barrier on the west side of I-41 near the U.S. Highway 45 interchange. In addition, existing safety and weight enforcement facilities along I-41 near the northern shore of Lake Butte des Morts will be removed and replaced.
HEAVY TRAVEL EXPECTED MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
Wisconsinites are forecast to travel in near-record numbers for this year’s Memorial Day weekend. AAA forecasts more than 816,000 Wisconsin residents will travel 50 miles or more. That’s over 30,000 more holiday travelers than last year, and second only to the all-time high set in 2019. Nationally, AAA projects the second highest traveled Memorial Day on record. Nearly 43.8 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more during the holiday travel period. That’s 1.7 million more travelers than last year, yet slightly behind 2005’s record of 44 million. Road trips are expected to set a record nationwide, with nearly 38.4 million traveling by car over Memorial Day weekend.
OASD DERBY GALA A SUCCESS
The Oshkosh Area School District Education Foundation’s annual gala was a success raising $100,000 to support career and technical education or CTE programs in the school district. Over 120 attendees donned their finest Kentucky Derby attire and were treated to an evening showcasing the remarkable skills of CTE students. Some of the highlights included the CTE students showcase featuring handcrafted items. A special online hat auction was also held. Over half of the evening’s “wish list” items, identified by CTE teachers, were funded and will be purchased for use in classrooms beginning next year. The annual gala was held at The Waters in Oshkosh on May 3rd.
