Rhys Hoskins, Jake Bauers and Joey Ortiz each homered to cool Sonny Gray as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the slumping St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 on Thursday night.

It was the fifth straight loss for the Cardinals, who opened a four-game series with the NL Central-leading Brewers. Milwaukee has won its last six against St. Louis, a streak that began last season.

Milwaukee’s William Contreras and Christian Yelich each went 3 of 4. Jared Koenig (4-1) pitched two scoreless innings of relief and worked his way out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fifth.

Gray (4-2) has been one of the last-place Cardinals’ few bright spots since signing a three-year, $75 million-contract in the offseason, but the 2023 AL Cy Young Award runner-up couldn’t stop St. Louis’ slide.

Through his first five starts, Gray allowed a total of six runs, and only three were earned. His 0.89 ERA was the lowest since 1910 by any Cardinals pitcher in his first five appearances with the organization.

The Brewers scored six runs off Gray on Thursday during his five-inning stint. Gray had given up just one homer all year before the Brewers went deep against him three times.

Milwaukee took the lead for good by scoring three runs in the first inning. It was the first time this season Gray had allowed a run before the fifth. A two-out wild pitch from Gray brought home Contreras. Hoskins followed with a two-run homer over the wall in right-center field.

Hoskins’ dog, Mae, was watching from the stands as part of the Brewers’ “Bark at the Park” promotion.

Bauers extended the lead to 4-0 by leading off the second with a 417-foot shot into the second deck of the right-field stands. After St. Louis’ Lars Nootbaar homered in the third, Ortiz made it 5-1 by delivering a 408-foot drive to center with two outs in the fourth.

Ortiz, who didn’t play in the Brewers’6-4 loss at Kansas City on Wednesday, has homered in each of his last two games.

Hoskins said the Brewers benefited from jumping on fastballs early in the count before Gray could turn to his outstanding breaking pitches. The homers by Bauers and Ortiz both came on first-pitch fastballs.

The Cardinals wasted a couple of chances to get back into the game. St. Louis brought the tying run to the plate with no outs in the fourth while trailing 4-1, but Dylan Carlson grounded into a double play and Masyn Winn struck out. The Cardinals then loaded the bases off Tobias Myers to start the fifth, but Koenig came out of the bullpen and got the next three outs without letting anyone score.

LHP Robert Gasser is expected to make his major league debut for the Brewers on Friday. RHP Lance Lynn (1-0, 3.28) is pitching for the Cardinals. First pitch is at 7:10.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Thursday there was just one game as the Diamondbacks edged the Reds 5-4. The Brewers lead the Cubs by a half-game in the division, the Pirates are 5 ½ out, the Reds 6 and the Cardinals are 7 games back.

In the Midwest League Thursday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost at Quad Cities to the River Bandits 8-1. The loss drops the T-Rats to 19-11 while the River Bandits improve to 18-12. The teams play again tonight with the first pitch at 6:30.

In the Eastern Conference NBA Semi-Final series in Boston Thursday night the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Celtics 118-94 to even their series at a game-each. In the Western Conference Semi-Finals the Dallas Mavericks won at Oklahoma City over the Thunder 119-110 to even their series at a game each.

Milwaukee Bucks guard Patrick Beverley was suspended by the NBA on Thursday for four games without pay to begin next season for his actions during and after the final game of an Eastern Conference first-round playoff series with the Indiana Pacers.

The league announced the suspension and said Beverley was getting punished for “forcefully throwing a basketball multiple times at spectators and an inappropriate interaction with a reporter during media availability.”

This suspension was handed down one day after Indianapolis police said they were investigating an “NBA player and citizen” altercation that happened during that May 2 game without mentioning anyone by name.

Beverley threw a ball at fans in the closing minutes of Milwaukee’s 120-98 Game 6 loss at Indiana that knocked the Bucks out of the playoffs. Cameras showed him sitting on the bench and tossing a ball into the stands, hitting a fan in the head with about 2 ½ minutes left. After a different fan threw the ball back to Beverley, who was holding his arm out for it, the Bucks guard fired it back at that spectator.

Beverley spoke about his behavior on an episode of “The Pat Bev Podcast” that was released Wednesday. He said he was called a word that he’d never been called before, but added that his actions were “still inexcusable.”

“I will be better,” he said. “I have to be better, and I will be better. That should have never happened. Regardless of what was said, that should have never happened. Simple as that.”

After the game, Beverley wouldn’t allow ESPN journalist Malinda Adams to ask him a question in a group interview in the locker room. He said it was because she didn’t subscribe to his podcast. Beverley told her to get her microphone out of his face and then eventually asked her to leave the interview circle.

The next day, Adams said on X that she had received apologies from both the Bucks and from Beverley himself.

The Bucks acquired the 35-year-old Beverley from the Philadelphia 76ers at the trade deadline. Beverley was playing on a one-year deal, making him an unrestricted free agent heading into the offseason.

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team will spend the weekend before Thanksgiving in a brand-new tournament.

Wisconsin, LSU, Pitt and Central Florida are set to play in the first-ever Greenbrier Tip-Off. The tournament is set for Nov. 22-24 at The Greenbrier, a resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

The Badgers will be looking for their second consecutive early-season championship after winning the Fort Myers Tip-Off last November.

Green Bay is on the clock. The following information is from a news release issued Thursday by the Green Bay Packers:

The countdown to the 2025 NFL Draft officially will begin Tuesday, May 14, with a ceremonial Draft Handoff from Michigan to Wisconsin, as a themed football arrives in Milwaukee from Detroit via the Lake Express Ferry from Muskegon, Mich., and is carried north to Green Bay to arrive in the Lambeau Field Atrium where a Countdown Clock will be unveiled, the Green Bay Packers said in a press release.

Similar to a passing of the torch in the Olympics, the Draft Handoff will see the football begin its Wisconsin journey in an area that is rich in pro football heritage, with early NFL teams located in Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha, as well as the 1940 NFL Draft held at the then-Schroeder Hotel in Milwaukee, Dec. 9, 1939. Additionally, the Green Bay Packers played a portion of their home schedule in Milwaukee from 1933-94.

The Packers say in a further homage to the unique history of the team, the cherished Packers’ bike kid tradition that began in 1958 at training camp will play a role in the Draft Handoff as bicycles will help transport the football to Green Bay. The special bike journey, Pedal to the Draft, will highlight Wisconsin’s outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities, an attractive component of the state’s tourism draw that will be on prominent display to multitudes of visitors next April.

The day’s events will begin with the arrival of the 11:45 a.m. Lake Express Ferry at its Milwaukee location. After remarks from Murphy and NFL and state officials, a small group of bicyclists, consisting of riders from the Packers, Travel Wisconsin, Wisconsin Bike Fed and Green Bay-area bike shops and bicycle advocates, will depart on the Pedal to the Draft to Green Bay. The bicyclists will pass by and make brief stops at several prominent locations on the way, highlighting the bike-ability of Wisconsin through its beautiful trails and roadways.

In Green Bay, the bicyclists will ride along Armed Forces Drive and stop at the Packers’ Ray Nitschke Field on the way to the Atrium. To celebrate the bike kid training camp tradition, Green Bay-area bike kids are invited to join the ride from Nitschke Field to the Atrium. Interested bike kids should be in position at the Armed Forces Drive entrance to Nitschke Field at 6 p.m. The group will then cross Oneida Street and ride into the Atrium for a ceremony that will unveil the 2025 NFL Draft Countdown Clock.

Members of the public are invited to attend the unveiling of the Countdown Clock, with the event scheduled to begin at approximately 6:30 p.m.
