The Brewers were off Thursday but tonight start a weekend series with the Seattle Mariners. Milwaukee had its four-game winning streak to open the season snapped on Wednesday as the Twins came up with five runs in the the seventh inning to win 7-3.

Scheduled starting pitchers for tonight’s series opener against Seattle are RHP Freddy Peralta (1-0, 1.50) for the Brewers and RHP Logan Gilbert (0-0, 1.29) for the Mariners. First pitch is at 7:10 at American Family Field.

There were two games in the NL Central Thursday.  The Pirates beat the Nationals on the road 7-4 and the Cardinals won at home over the Marlins 8-5.

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers open their Midwest League season Friday night hosting the Peoria Chiefs. First pitch is at 6:40 at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Bucks host Toronto on Friday as Milwaukee hopes to bounce back after losing to the Memphis Grizzlies 111-101 Wednesday night. The Bucks (47-29) have six games remaining in the regular season and are trying to hold onto to second place behind the first-place Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference, 1 ½ games ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Tipoff is at 7:00 at Fiserv Forum.

The NCAA women’s semi-finals are at Rocket Mortgage Field House tonight in Cleveland. In the first game #3 seed NC State plays #1 seed South Carolina. In the second game #1 Iowa plays #3 UConn. The winners advance to Sunday’s championship game with the tip-off scheduled for 3:00.

The men’s semi-finals are Saturday as #11 seed NC State meets #1 seed Purdue in the first game and #4 Alabama plays #1 UConn. The winner’s meet Monday night at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

On the PGA Tour Akshay Bhatia has the first-round lead at the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio. Bhatia shot a 9-under 63, giving him a 3-shot lead over Brendon Todd and Justin Lower.  Four other golfers are 4 shots back.

The Ripon boy’s and girl’s track teams competed at the ECC Indoor Championships on Thursday. On the boy’s side, the Tigers finished 5th out of seven schools. Brandon Beahm earned a first-place finish in the pole vault by clearing 13 feet.  Also recording top 5 finishes were Kyler Rieder, Jack Schoezel, Vicente Beltran and Keagan Buettner. The boy’s 4 X 800, 4 X 200 and 4 X 400 teams were all able to record a 4th place finish as well.

Winneconne won the meet with 173.5 points, followed by Plymouth, Kewaskum, Waupun, Ripon in 5th, followed by Waupun and Kettle Moraine Lutheran.

On the girl’s side the Tigers finished 4th with 72 points. The 4 X 200 team of Adam Nodolf, Karsyn Bauman, Emma Resop and Victoria Rivera took first with a time of 1:56.06. Top individual finisher’s included Karsyn Bauman, Victoria Rivera, Ashley Bradley, Emma Resop, Claire Walker, Reese Books and Addy Baird.

Berlin won the meet with 139 points followed by Winneconne, Kettle Moraine Lutheran, Ripon, 4th, and then Waupun, Kewaskum and Plymouth.

The Tigers will travel to Berlin on Tuesday, April 9th, for a quad.

Green Bay Phoenix coach Sundance Wicks is capping his first year by winning the Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year award for best 1st-year head coach in Division 1 men’s basketball.

Wicks guided Green Bay to 18 wins, arriving after the team went just 3-29 the season before.

He beat out 16 other finalists for the award.

In a high school track invitational Winneconne won the boys meet while Berlin won the girls meet.

The Green Bay Packers promoted Bryan Engel to vice president of player health and performance and Nate Weir to director of sports medicine/head athletic trainer. The announcements were made Wednesday by General Manager Brian Gutekunst.

Engel has worked as the director of sports medicine/head athletic trainer for the past two seasons after working as the head athletic trainer from 2015-21. He originally joined Green Bay in 1997 as a seasonal assistant and served as an assistant athletic trainer for the Packers from 1999-2014. Engel was honored with the 2013 Tim Davey NFC Assistant Athletic Trainer Award. Prior to joining Green Bay, Engel was a seasonal assistant with the New England Patriots in 1996-97 after serving as a training-camp intern for the Patriots in 1995.

Weir has been the associate athletic trainer/director of rehab & return to play since July 2022 after working as the coordinator of rehabilitation from 2017-22. For the previous 14 years, he was an assistant athletic trainer for the Packers. Weir originally joined Green Bay as a summer athletic training intern in 2004 and was a season athletic training intern for the Packers from 2005-07. Since 2020, he has been a consultant for the NFL’s Musculoskeletal Committee – Foot and Ankle Task Force.
