Jackson Chourio singled in a run in his first American Family Field plate appearance, Christian Yelich homered and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 on Tuesday to open a season with four straight wins for the first time since 2006.

Chourio stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the third inning after consecutive one-out singles by Rhys Hoskins, Oliver Dunn and Brice Turang. The 20-year-old followed with an RBI single into shallow right field.

“I was just looking to make good contact there and bring in the first run of the game,” Chourio said through an interpreter.

Chourio, who signed an $82 million dollar contract in the offseason before making his big league debut, is hitting .400 (6 for 15).

Home after a three-game sweep at the New York Mets, the Brewers never trailed in front of a sellout crowd of 41,659 that saved its biggest cheers for the introduction of Bob Uecker as he began his 54th season of broadcasting Brewers baseball.

Turang went 2 for 3 with an RBI single, improving his batting average to .500 (7 for 14).

Milwaukee is 4-0 for the fourth time after winning its first 13 games in 1987 and its first five in 1978 and 2006.

Yelich hit a 423-foot-drive over the center-field wall and Turang added a two-out RBI double in the third as the Brewers boosted the lead to 3-0.

Matt Wallner had a sacrifice fly in the fourth and the Twins closed within a run in the seventh on Christian Vázquez’s sacrifice fly, a run that was unearned because of catcher William Contreras’ fielding error that allowed Willi Castro to reach. Hoby Milner preserved the lead by striking out pinch-hitter Kyle Farmer to strand Manuel Margot at second.

Carlos Correa walked to start the ninth before Margot hit into a double play and Carlos Santana grounded out as Abner Uribe finished a three-hitter for his third save in as many chances.

Elvis Peguero (2-0) pitched two hitless innings after starter Jakob Junis allowed one run and one hit over four innings in his Brewers debut.

Junis, a 31-year-old right-hander, threw just 47 pitches as he adjusts to starting after working primarily out of the bullpen for San Francisco Giants last season. Junis also had been dealing with a minor shoulder issue for part of the spring.

Twins starter Louie Varland (0-1) gave up three runs, six hits and two walks in four innings.

Brewers: LHP Wade Miley threw 33 pitches Monday and expects to make a rehabilitation appearance Friday for Triple-A Nashville as he works his way back from a shoulder injury.

Brewers RHP Joe Ross makes his first major league appearance since August 2021 and Twins RHP Chris Paddack makes his first start since May 2022 when the two-game series concludes Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is at 12:10 from American Family Field.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Phillies beat the Reds 9-4 as Bryce Harper hit 3-home runs, including a grand slam and drove in 6 runs, the Cubs pounded the Rockies 12-2 and the Cardinals downed the Padres 5-2.

Corey Kispert scored 27 points and Deni Avdija added 23 to help the Washington Wizards beat the Milwaukee Bucks 117-113 on Tuesday night despite Giannis Antetokounmpo’s triple-double.

Antetokounmpo had 35 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists and reached double figures in all three categories by the end of the third quarter. That wasn’t enough for Milwaukee, which came into the night with a 2 1/2-game lead over Cleveland for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Jordan Poole had 16 points and a career-high 13 assists for Washington, and Jared Butler provided a lift off the bench with 17 points. Tristan Vukcevic, a 7-foot rookie from Serbia whom the Wizards signed in the middle of last month, scored 14. His previous career high was six.

Washington led 58-54 at halftime, then began the third quarter on a 12-1 run to stretch the lead to 15. Milwaukee shot 11 of 48 from 3-point range on the night, but the Bucks finally made a few near the end of the third, including Jae Crowder’s shot at the buzzer that cut the lead to five.

It was down to two in the fourth, but Washington was able to hold on. A 3-pointer by Kispert made it 113-106, and with Milwaukee down by four in the final minute, Antetokounmpo lost the ball inside.

The Bucks got it back and called timeout with 21.9 seconds remaining. Khris Middleton made a layup, but Anthony Gill got free behind Milwaukee’s press for a layup with 8.3 seconds to play that pushed the lead back to four.

The Bucks are 18-20 on the road.

Milwaukee was playing without star guard Damian Lillard (right groin strain), and Kyle Kuzma (right heel contusion) was out for the Wizards. Rivers said Lillard could be back as early as Wednesday night.

The Bucks lost Patrick Beverley in the third quarter after Poole slipped while driving to the basket and fell into Beverley’s left leg. Both players were shaken up, although Poole was able to play on. Rivers said he thought Beverley sprained his ankle.

The Bucks host Memphis on Wednesday night.

Allie Ziebell showed the rest of the country what Northeast Wisconsin has seen her four years at Neenah, she’s one heck of a shooter.

The senior, who’s headed to UConn, won the 3-point shooting contest in front of a national television audience at the McDonald’s All-American Games Monday at Delmar Fieldhouse by first winning the girls title and then beating boys champ Trent Perry (uncommitted) in the overall championship.

Ziebell was the last shooter in the girls contest and scored 21 points, edging Syla Swords (Michigan recruit), who had 20 points.

Then in the final, Ziebell and Perry tied with 20 points and then in overtime, Ziebell won 12-9 as shooters used three racks instead of the normal five.

Tuesday, Ziebell played in the girls McDonald’s All-American game.
