TOMAH MAN ARRESTED FOR SUSPECTED 12TH OWI

The State Patrol Saturday night arrested a 58-year-old Tomah man for his 12th operating a motor vehicle while under the influence offense. Jon Miner was pulled over on Interstate 41 at State Highway 55 in Outagamie County for a speeding violation. The state trooper that pulled him over observed signs of impairment and administered field sobriety tests. Miner was taken to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah for a blood draw and was later booked into the Outagamie County Jail.  Miner’s last OWI conviction was in Jackson County in January of 2020.

STATE HIGHWAY 76 CONSTRUCTION IN WAUPACA AND OUTAGAMIE COUNTIES

Construction operations resume today to improve 12.7 miles of State Highway 76 in Waupaca and Outagamie counties. The two year project on State Highway 76 from State Highway 54 in the village of Shiocton to U.S. Highway 45 in the town of Bear Creek will finish up this summer.  Construction locations in Waupaca County are the Outagamie/Waupaca County Line to U.S. Highway 45 including the State Highways 22/45/and 76 intersection. In Outagamie County the construction zone is from State Highway 54 to the Outagamie/Waupaca County Line. From today through early June State Highway 22 will be closed to through traffic at U.S. Highway 45. Access to residences and businesses will be maintained. State Highway 76 will be closed to through traffic from U.S. Highway 45 to State Highway 54 from May 6th to late July. Access to residences and businesses will be maintained. There will be detours.

UNITED WAY RECEIVES GRANT

Fond du Lac County United Way Executive Director Amber Kilawee says they were fortunate to receive a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through the CDC’s Youth Alliance. That grant is paying for a Community Impact Coordinator for the Drug Free Communities and that program’s efforts. Jeanette Morales is the community impact coordinator. Kilawee says the grant and a needed community match come out to about $1.25 million over a five year period. Kilawee says the Fond du Lac County Health Department and a Fond du Lac County Community Health Improvement Plan have identified drug, alcohol, and substance use and abuse as a top issue.  Mailed out and online surveys currently circulating are part of an effort to update a community health assessment.

GREEN LAKE SCHOOL DISTRICT READ A THON

A Read-A-Thon benefitting the Green Lake School Library wrapped up over the weekend. It was the third year for the fundraiser. Green Lake High School Junior Elliat Zodrow was the project manager for the effort. She says friends and family of 4K through 6th graders participating in the Read-A-Thon were asked to donate. She notes the Read-A-Thon accomplishes two tasks instilling a love of reading in the students participating and raising funds for the school library. She says last year’s Read-A-Thon paid for a book vending machine, library games, books and more.  Heading into the weekend student readers had amassed over 78,000 minutes of reading. Second and third graders were in the lead. The winning class is treated to a pizza and ice cream party. Anyone interested in being a sponsor for next year’s Read-A-Thon should contact the Green Lake School District.

OSHKOSH FIRE DEPARTMENT RECOGNITION DINNER

The Oshkosh Fire Department hosted its annual recognition dinner on Saturday, April 20th. Awards were presented to city of Oshkosh firefighters, as well as to community members who were selected through a nomination process. Exceptional Duty Awards were presented to nine firefighters. Six more received Life Saving Awards. Oshkosh Defense Team Awards were presented to five individuals. Receiving Guardian Angel Awards were Mike Brantmeier, David Kotula, Noah Moxon, and Evan Murray.  Emily Eisenchink, Dr. Jennifer Skolaski, and the Salvation Army were recognized as Friends of the Department.  The Fire Chiefs Award was presented to Captain Michael Bryan.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WEEK CELEBRATED

Envision Greater Fond du Lac is participating in the 2024 Economic Development Week, a global initiative led by the International Economic Development Council. Envision CEO and President Sadie Howell says, “Economic Development Week is a crucial time to reflect on our collective achievements and to plan for a future of inclusive and sustainable growth.” This year’s Economic Development Week celebrates Economic Development Heroes spotlighting economic developers who are pioneers in their communities.  Envision Greater Fond du Lac is celebrating three of its individuals. They are Vice President of Economic Development Lisa McArthur, Director of Small Business and Entrepreneurship Raina Lyman, and Director of Business Intelligence Sarah Van Buren.  Economic Development Week takes place May 6th through the 10th.

THEATER IN THE WOODS

The Royal Canadian Air Force’s centennial, renowned aerospace designer Burt Rutan, and the future of spaceflight are all part of the schedule this July as EAA AirVenture 2024 hosts its memorable evening programs at Theater in the Woods. EAA Vice President of communities and member programs Rick Larsen says, “This year’s programming again creates ‘only at Oshkosh’ moments with those involved in aviation history, cutting-edge technology, or the future of flight.” Programs are scheduled each evening at Theater in the Woods. The 71st Experimental Aircraft Association’s fly-in convention is July 22nd through the 28th at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.

SSM HEALTH TREE PLANTING IN MURRAY PARK

As part of an SSM Health system wide effort in honor of Earth Day and Arbor Day, SSM Health team members planted four new trees in Wisconsin parks, including two Minnesota Red Bud trees in Ripon’s Murray Park. Ripon Community Hospital staff coordinated with the City of Ripon to enhance the local park by planting trees on Arbor Day Friday. SSM Health Wisconsin Mission Integration Regional Vice President Rosie Perez and Nicole Gill the vice president, clinical administrator for Ripon Community Hospital and Waupun Memorial Hospital were among those taking part in the tree planting ceremony. Gill says, “Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day or Arbor Day slogan, it is a requirement of our faith.”
