4/28/24 Columbia County Deputy Attacked By Dog During Traffic Stop

28 April 2024 News

A Columbia County Sheriff’s deputy was attacked by a dog during a traffic stop Friday afternoon on State Highway 78 near Old U Road in the Town of Caledonia. A vehicle was pulled over for equipment violations. The vehicle had illegally tinted windows and the driver would only roll down a window a few inches but refused to get out of the vehicle. There were dogs in the vehicle with him. The deputy called for a supervisor, and they had to bust a window and use a taser to get the driver, a 32-year-old Hartford man, out of the vehicle. While removing the driver from the vehicle one of the dogs exited through the door and bit a deputy multiple times. The deputy had to shoot the dog to stop the attack. The Hartford man was taken to a hospital, got medical clearance, and was taken to the Columbia County Jail. The deputy was treated at a hospital and vaccinated for rabies. The dog was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic but had to be euthanized due to the extent of its injuries. A charge of resisting/obstructing causing substantial bodily injury has been referred against the Hartford man. The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
