RIPON STREET PROJECTS PARTICIPATION APPROVED

The Ripon Common Council Monday night passed resolutions committing the city to future street improvement projects. The Council passed a resolution committing matching funds to the Hamburg/Hennie Street projects hoping the city will get a community development block grant for the project of $500,000 or more. One of the things the city needed for the grant was to commit its own share of funding which will be more than $1.3 million. The Council also approved an Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan for the next three years. It includes the St. Wenceslaus and Hamburg/Hennie Street projects. It also includes improvements for Houston Street. City Administrator Adam Sonntag says he included the Houston Street reconstruction project in the plan because the city was awarded a Municipal Street Improvement Supplemental Grant of $639,185 for the project which is more than half of the estimated cost of $1.27 million. Sonntag says the city was one of only 41 municipalities across the state to get that type of grant.

OSHKOSH PRATT TRAIL UPDATE

Officials in Oshkosh say reconstruction of Menominee Park’s Pratt Trail will likely be completed this fall. Work began last August but was delayed due to archaeological work that is taking place at the site. That work will run through the summer. An extensive Native American village that dates from circa AD 900 to 1600 is in the project area. The archaeological work is underway now through this summer within Menominee Park. The archaeologists will work in tandem with road construction crews, with work anticipated to be completed by this fall. Visitors to Menominee Park are asked to respect the restricted areas of the park to allow archaeological teams to complete their work.

PHONE WOES

Green Lake County Chief Deputy Sheriff Matt Vande Kolk asks residents to have patience while they switch over to a new 911 provider. He says they have experienced outages with their current provider Brightspeed over the past six to eight months including last week. He says in those instances a fiber optic line was cut or severed in another state but it also affected service in Wisconsin. He says it takes time to switch over to a new 911 provider and they are in the process of going with the ESInet Project from AT&T. Vande Kolk points out once that happens they will have a better system of redundancy and it will be more like a web rather than a straight line of information. They will have fiber and copper connection to the Sheriff’s Office which will allow them to better transition calls to other surrounding agencies if there is a local outage. Last week a fiber optic line was severed in Kansas which affected 911 and phone service in seven states.

OPPORTUNITY GRANTS

One of the 27 bills authored or co-authored by State Senator Joan Ballweg signed into law this session has to do with opportunity grant funding. The state lawmaker from Markesan says they created a pool of $10 million for the funding to offset costs for hosting major events in Wisconsin. She says the funding is not meant to pay for the entire costs of staging an event that takes local, corporate, and state partnerships. She says Green Bay’s hosting of next year’s NFL Draft is one example. She says in the future Milwaukee would like to host an NBA All Star game and they would also like to bring the WWF to American Family Field for a WrestleMania event.  Ballweg says the current season of the BRAVO network’s Top Chef was filmed in Wisconsin last summer and has been shining a nice light on the state. Top Chef can be seen on BRAVO tonight, check listings for the time.
