Blake Perkins hit a single in the eighth inning to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 1-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, spoiling a stellar start by Padres right-hander Michael King, who pitched a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings.

King (2-1) went a career-high 7 2/3 innings on the day, throwing 109 pitches. He struck out 10 batters and walked two.

King didn’t allow a runner past first base until the eighth inning. Brice Turang made his major league-leading ninth stolen base, advancing to second after hitting a single. King was charged with a run when Turang scored on Perkins’ single off Wandy Peralta.

The Brewers snapped a three-game losing streak and ended the Padres’ three-game winning streak.

Milwaukee right-hander Bryse Wilson pitched 3 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking one. It was his first start since Sept. 28, 2022, when he was with Pittsburgh.

Abner Uribe (2-1) helped preserve the shutout in the eighth after giving up a leadoff triple to Matthew Batten. Uribe retired the next three hitters, punctuated by a bare hand grab he made of Fernando Tatis Jr.’s groundball and throwing him out by a step for the third out.

Joel Payamps earned his second save, pitching a perfect ninth.

Milwaukee has struggled to score lately. In six consecutive games from April 7 through Saturday, Milwaukee averaged nearly 10 runs per game (58 total). Since then, they scored four Sunday, three Monday and three Tuesday.

It was the first time the Padres have been shut out since Aug. 22.

After an off-day Thursday Brewers RHP Freddy Peralta (2-0, 2.55 ERA) faces Cardinals RHP Kyle Gibson (1-2, 6.16 ERA) at St. Louis on Friday.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Mets beat the Pirates 9-1, the Cubs over the Diamondbacks 5-3, the A’s downed the Cardinals 6-3 and the Mariners beat the Reds 5-1. The Brewers lead the Cubs by a half-game, the Pirates are a game out, the Pirates 2 ½ games out and the Cardinals are three games behind.

Damian Lillard took a small step forward Wednesday in his bid to be ready for the start of the Milwaukee Bucks’ Eastern Conference first-round playoff series with the Indiana Pacers.

Bucks coach Doc Rivers said Lillard got back on the practice floor and did some shooting and “all of the walk-through stuff.” Lillard hadn’t practiced on Tuesday after a sore left adductor bothered him the final weekend of the regular season.

The Bucks have Thursday off as they get ready for Game 1 of their playoff series Sunday at Milwaukee. Rivers expressed optimism that Lillard would be able to practice more fully on Friday.

USA Basketball studied every men’s basketball game it has played for about two decades and a clear trend eventually appeared. When the defense isn’t good enough, the Americans tend to get themselves into trouble.

And the team for the Paris Olympics was built with that in mind.

LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Bam Adebayo, Devin Booker, Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum, Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday, Tyrese Haliburton, Anthony Edwards and Kawhi Leonard were formally announced as members of the U.S. Olympic team on Wednesday – a group with nearly 200,000 NBA points, 84 All-Star Game selections and 10 Olympic gold medals between them.

Scoring shouldn’t be a problem, and if the defense does its job, the Americans – looking for a fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal – will be tough to beat.

The group has seven players with gold medals; Durant has three, James has two, while Adebayo, Booker, Holiday, Tatum and Booker each have one. Combined, the 12 players had averages of 24.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists this season, shooting 39% from 3-point range.

The amount of talent on the U.S. roster is staggering. Of the 12 selections, seven finished the season ranked among the NBA’s top 15 scorers per game. James is the league’s all-time scoring leader, Curry the all-time leader in 3-pointers, Haliburton won the assist-per-game title this season and 10 were All-Stars this season as well.

The Americans remain ranked No. 1 in the world by FIBA even after failing to medal in the two most recent World Cups – finishing seventh at China in 2019 and fourth at Manila last summer.

The Green Bay Gamblers needed overtime, but they beat the Chicago Steel 3-2 in a decisive Game 3 of their first round USHL playoff series.

The Gamblers advance in the postseason for the first time in 12 years. Aidan Park played hero with the golden goal in overtime after Ben Poitras had scored twice for the team in regulation.

Hunters are crossing their fingers as the first period of the spring turkey hunting season started around sunrise Wednesday.

Great news for hunters: The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said it should be a good season.   There are still some tags you can buy for certain zones and time periods.
