Dylan Cease pitched six strong innings, Ha-Seong Kim hit a three-run homer and the San Diego Padres beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3 on Tuesday night.
Fernando Tatis Jr. had three hits and scored twice as the Padres handed the Brewers their first series loss of the season. San Diego will try to complete a three-game sweep Wednesday afternoon.
Sal Frelick had three of the Brewers’ six hits, and William Contreras drove in two runs.
Cease (2-1) walked five batters, but he struck out seven. He surrendered one run and two hits while throwing 110 pitches, three off his career high. He improved his ERA to 1.99 in his first season with the Padres, who acquired the right-hander in a trade with the Chicago White Sox last month. He has been particularly effective against right-handed hitters, yielding just one hit to right-handers through his first four starts.
The Padres took the lead for good by scoring four runs in the first against Wade Miley (0-1).
San Diego’s first three batters reached before Manny Machado delivered a 107.7 mph liner that hit Miley around the left knee. The ball caromed off Miley and rolled toward first baseman Jake Bauers, who tagged out Machado while Xander Bogaerts scored from third.
Miley was examined by staff and then attempted some warmup pitches before staying in the game to face Kim, who blasted a 1-0 cutter off the left-field foul pole to give San Diego a 4-0 lead.
Miley’s leg appeared to bother him again as he threw out Kim on a bunt attempt in the third. Miley finished that inning after speaking with Brewers staff on the mound, but Milwaukee turned to its bullpen from there.
Miley permitted four hits and four runs – three earned – while striking out two and walking two.
Milwaukee trailed 6-1 before staging a two-out rally in the seventh. Contreras hit an RBI single, and then Willy Adames walked to load the bases.
Yuki Matsui ended the threat by striking out pinch-hitter Gary Sánchez on three pitches.
Meanwhile, Brewers OF Christian Yelich went on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Saturday, with a lower back strain. The Brewers recalled utilityman Owen Miller from Triple-A Nashville. Yelich hasn’t played since the back problem caused him to leave in the second inning of an 11-1 triumph at Baltimore on Friday.
RHP Michael King (2-0, 4.19 ERA) starts for the Padres on Wednesday. The Brewers haven’t announced a starting pitcher. First pitch is at 12:10.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Mets beat the Pirates 3-1, the Diamondbacks nipped the Cubs 12-11, the Mariners downed the Cardinals 3-1 and the Cardinals slipped past the A’s 3-2. The Brewers and Pirates are tied for first in the division, the Cubs are a half-game out, the Reds 1 ½ and the Cardinals are two games behind.
The Milwaukee Bucks will start the playoffs without their star scorer, Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to an ESPN report.
According to senior NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski’s sources, the Bucks are preparing to start the opening round against the Indiana Pacers without the two-time MVP, but the team is hopeful he’ll be able to return later in the series.
Antetokounmpo left a 104-91 victory over the Boston Celtics last week because of a strained left calf. The Bucks announced Wednesday that Antetokounmpo would miss the final three games of the regular season.
“No timeline or anything like that, but we’ve got the best team working with him,” Bucks coach Doc Rivers said last week. “There’s no one who’s going to work harder than him. You know that. He’ll be back when he should be back. We’ll find out when that is.”
Antetokounmpo poured in 64 points against the Pacers in one of their regular-season meetings, though their Central Division rivals won four out of five games.
The Bucks are the number-3 seed in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Their first game is Sunday, April 21, at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.
After opening up the first round of the USHL Playoffs with a 6-5 win over Chicago, Green Bay was looking to end the best-of-three series with a win Tuesday night.
The 6-seeded Steel weren’t going down without a fighting, jumping out to a 1-0 lead with 14:52 left in the first period.
Adam Gajan had 7 saves in the first period, preventing the 3-seeded Gamblers from trailing just 1-0 entering the first intermission.
Chicago would net it’s second goal of the game at the 11:28 mark of the second period, leading 2-0 after the first 40 minutes.
With the Gamblers running out of time to try and play catch up, Misha Danylov came through for Green Bay.
The left wing put the puck in from the crease for the Gamblers first goal of the game, but they still trailed 2-1 with 16:40 left in the match.
The Steel would respond shortly after, netting their third goal less than three minutes later to take a 3-1 lead.
Chicago would score again to take a 4-1 lead before Julian Lutz netted Green Bay’s second and final goal of the game, making a 4-2 match.
The Steel would find the back of the net one final time to take a 5-2 lead, winning by that same score to take game two.
The three-game series will be decided on Wednesday with the winner moving on to face the 2-seed Muskegon in the second round. Puck drop for game three is set for 7:05 pm at the Resch Center.
Team USA is finalizing their roster for the upcoming summer Olympics in Paris, and Oshkosh North alum Tyrese Haliburton is set to take the world stage.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting Team USA’s roster will include Haliburton along with LeBron James, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, Joel Embiid, Devin Booker, Anthony Edwards, Jrue Holiday, and Bam Adebayo, and Anthony Davis.
Team USA defeated France 87-82 for the gold medal in the last Olympics back in 2021, which were moved back a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Haliburton was a rookie that following season, and has since emerged as one of the rising stars of the league. This season Haliburton averaged 20.1 points, and 10.9 assists a game was named an All-Star starter for the first time in his career.
His Indiana Pacers squad will take on the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the NBA Playoffs on Sunday at Fiserv Forum.
