Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer and Wade Miley came off the injured list to pitch four innings of one-hit ball to lift the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds in a steady rain on Wednesday night.
The 37-year-old Miley started the season on in the injured list because of pain in his throwing shoulder. He was activated before the game Wednesday and got the nod because so many of Milwaukee’s top pitchers are ailing. Miley, who threw a no-hitter when he was with the Reds in 2021, was limited to 52 pitches and allowed just a run and a hit.
Bryse Wilson (1-0) pitched the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to get win. He allowed a run and three hits.
Blake Perkins also homered for the Brewers. William Conteras singled home two as part of Milwaukee’s three-run second inning, and Jackson Chourio also had two RBIs.
With the two-run shot in the first inning, Yelich has seven RBIs in the first three games of the series.
Reds starter Hunter Greene (0-1) allowed six earned runs and six hits through six innings. He struck out nine but allowed the homers to Yelich and Perkins.
Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz rocketed a solo homer to left in the fifth inning that came off the bat at 110.4 mph. De La Cruz has hits in 11 of 12 games this season and has reached base in 17 consecutive games dating back to Sept. 26.
The game initially was delayed 1:50 because of heavy rain.
The Reds have a chance to come out with a tie in the four-game series when they send right-hander Nick Martinez (0-0, 7.20 ERA) against Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta (1-0, 3.09) on Thursday. First pitch is at 12:10.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Phillies edged the Cardinals 4-3 and the Padres pounded the Cubs 10-2.
In the Midwest League Wednesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won on the road 14-8 over the South Bend Cubs. The teams play again tonight with the first pitch at 6:05 CDT.
Bobby Portis had 30 points, nine rebounds and a career-high five steals to help the Milwaukee Bucks withstand Giannis Antetokounmpo’s absence and beat the Orlando Magic 117-99 on Wednesday night.
The Bucks played a night after Antetokounmpo left a 104-91 victory over the Boston Celtics because of a strained left calf. The Bucks announced Wednesday that the two-time MVP would miss the final three games of the regular season, though his availability for the start of the playoffs remains uncertain.
“No timeline or anything like that, but we’ve got the best team working with him,” Bucks coach Doc Rivers said before the game. “There’s no one who’s going to work harder than him. You know that. He’ll be back when he should be back. We’ll find out when that is.”
Damian Lillard had 29 points and nine assists for the Bucks, who improved to 4-3 in games Antetokounmpo has missed this season. Jae Crowder scored 14 points off the bench. Pat Beverley had 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Milwaukee also was missing Khris Middleton as the team monitors his workload after a sprained left ankle caused him to sit out 16 straight games this season.
Milwaukee (49-31) is 1 1/2 games ahead of New York (47-32) and two games ahead of Cleveland (47-33) in the race for the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 playoff seed behind the Boston Celtics, who already have clinched the NBA’s best regular-season record.
The Magic (46-34) have lost two straight and three of four as they try to earn one of the Eastern Conference’s top six seeds and avoid falling into a play-in situation. Orlando is chasing its first playoff berth since 2020 and only its third since 2012.
Orlando visits Philadelphia on Friday and hosts Milwaukee on Sunday in its final two regular-season games.
The Bucks are at Oklahoma City on Friday night.
The NFL announced Wednesday that the Green Bay Packers will face the Philadelphia Eagles this season in a Week 1 matchup in São Paulo, Brazil, in the first-ever regular season game in South America.
The game, which will take place on Friday, Sept. 6, will kick off the season for the Packers and marks Green Bay’s second international regular-season appearance, following the team’s game in 2022 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
“We’re looking forward to being a part of this historic matchup against the Eagles in São Paulo,” said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. “We’re excited to play in front of our devoted fans in Brazil and help build upon the international popularity of the NFL and the Packers. We had a great experience playing internationally for the first time a couple of years ago and we’re proud to be part of the league’s continued global growth.”
First announced in December, the matchup will take place at the Corinthians Arena. The venue is home to Brazilian soccer team the SC Corinthians and hosted both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. The game will also be the first time the NFL has played a game on Friday night of opening weekend in over 50 years (Cardinals at Rams, Sept. 18, 1970).
As the Eagles were designated to host the game, the matchup will be considered a road game for the Packers. Because visiting teams typically do not receive a ticket allotment for Season Ticket Holders, tickets to the game are not currently available to purchase through the Packers. Ticket packages will be available through On Location, the Official Hospitality Partner of the NFL, at https://onlocationexp.com/packersbrazil. The NFL also announced recently that Peacock (NBCUniversal) has secured the rights to exclusively stream the game. In keeping with a long-standing NFL policy, the game will be available on free, over-the-air broadcast television in the local markets of the competing teams as well as on mobile devices with NFL+.
The rest of the Packers 2024 schedule will be announced later this spring and will feature nine regular-season home games and one preseason home game hosted at Lambeau Field.
As previously announced, the Gold package will receive the ninth regular-season game this year, the first year the ninth game will be hosted at Lambeau Field. Green package Season Ticket Holders will receive their typical allotment of regular-season games (six) and will also receive this year’s preseason game. The next time Lambeau Field hosts the ninth game, the Green package will receive the ninth game and the Gold package will receive the preseason game. More information about how the 17-game NFL schedule and international game schedule impacts Season Ticket Holders is available at packers.com/tickets.
The 2024 Masters Tournament, the biggest golf event of the year, starts Thursday and runs through Sunday at Augusta National Golf Course in Augusta, Georgia. The event began in 1934.
Last year, Jon Rahm won by four strokes over Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson. In 2024, Rahm’s played well since switching to LIV Golf. Scottie Scheffler, the 2022 Masters winner, has looked like
one of the best golfers in the world so far this year. Koepka’s finished second in Augusta twice; 2024 could be the year he finally breaks through.
Among the notables are Rory Mcllroy, who will be attempting to win his first Masters and complete the Grand Slam. Tiger Woods, who has won five Masters titles, is also competing along with a number of other current greats.
A first-time winner’s donned the green jacket in eight of the past nine years and Augusta could see another new name hoist the trophy in 2024.
Green Bay’s Kevin Borseth is retiring from college basketball after winning 821 games and earning 14 NCAA Tournament berths during a 37-year head coaching career.
Borseth announced his retirement at a Wednesday morning news conference.
Borseth owned an 821-316 overall record, ranking him 16th among all Division I women’s basketball coaches in total wins. Green Bay went 27-7 this season and made its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018, losing to Tennessee in the first round.
This season, the only active coaches with more Division I wins than Borseth were Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer, UConn’s Geno Auriemma, Iowa’s Lisa Bluder, Little Rock’s Joe Foley and North Carolina State’s Wes Moore. VanDerveer announced her retirement Tuesday night.
Borseth spent most of his career at Green Bay, where he posted a 509-146 record in two separate stints totaling 21 seasons. He was at Green Bay from 1998-2007 before leaving. He returned to Green Bay in 2012.
In between his two stints at Green Bay, Borseth went 87-73 at Michigan from 2007-12. In his final season at Michigan, Borseth led the Wolverines to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001.
Borseth began his coaching career at Division II program Michigan Tech, where he went 225-97 from 1987-98.
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Conference Realignment Task Force reconvened at the executive staff office Tuesday to finalize plans that were remanded by the Board of Control at its March 5 meeting for further consideration
Schools and conferences associated with those remanded were re-evaluated by the Task Force, resulting in recommendations that include 54 schools assigned to six conferences. Following its deliberations, the Task Force recommends the Greater Metro Conference maintain its current nine-team configuration with Divine Savior Holy Angels and Marquette being gender-specific members of the league.
The new construct of a seven-team North Shore Conference includes Cedarburg, Grafton, Hartford, Homestead, Nicolet, Slinger and Whitefish Bay. A new conference, yet to be named, was formed with Kettle Moraine Lutheran, Kewaskum, Plymouth, Port Washington, Sheboygan South, West Bend East and West Bend West.
In the modified seven-team version proposed for the Southeast Conference, Oak Creek moves from the Southeast Conference into the eight-team Classic 8 Conference with Arrowhead, Catholic Memorial, Kettle Moraine, Mukwonago, Muskego, Oconomowoc and Waukesha West. Waukesha North and Waukesha South will move from the Classic 8 into the Woodland Conference, joining Brown Deer, Cudahy, Greendale, Greenfield, Milwaukee Lutheran, New Berlin Eisenhower, New Berlin West, Pewaukee, Pius XI Catholic, Shorewood, South Milwaukee and West Allis Central to form a 14-team league with two divisions. The schools assigned to each of the divisions will be determined if the recommendation is approved.
Conference configurations for the remanded realignment plans, as well as all the original realignment proposals submitted, are available on the Conference Realignment Requests and Proposals page of the WIAA Website at https://www.wiaawi.org/Schools/Conferences/Conference-Realignment/Requests-and-Proposals. The Task Force’s recommendations are advanced to the Board of Control for final consideration at its meeting Tuesday, April 23. The Board will have the options to approve or reject the realignment recommendations. If approved, the modifications will be implemented for the 2025-26 sports seasons.
