Austin Eckroat left PGA National with a share of the lead Saturday. He left with the outright lead Sunday. But, he’ll have to come back Monday to finish the job at the Cognizant Classic. A Monday finish awaits at PGA National, after the final round of the opening event on the PGA Tour’s Florida Swing was interrupted by thunderstorms that brought nearly 2 inches of rain in a hurry Sunday afternoon and forced everyone off the course for 3 1/2 hours.

Eckroat was the leader at 15 under through seven holes, one shot ahead of Erik vam Rooyen, who roared up the leaderboard by opening his round with six consecutive birdies on his way to an 8-under 63. He finished at 14-under 270, and now waits to see what’ll happen.

It’s the first time the tour event at PGA National — known as the Honda Classic until this year — will have a Monday finish since 2015.

Van Rooyen is alone in second, and Jake Knapp — the winner last week in Mexico — was 5 under on his day through 15 holes, ending Sunday at 13 under and alone in third, two shots back.

Billy Horschel (5 under through 17) was in the group at 12 under, along with Keith Mitchell (65), Shane Lowry (who completed five holes) and Alex Noren (who completed 12 holes).

St. Mary’s Springs is again D2 Wisconsin State Hockey Tournament champions defeating top seed & defending champ New Richmond 6-2 Saturday at Capital Ice Arena near Madison. This marks the third state title since 2020 for the Ledgers in their fourth tournament appearance in five years.

SMS got the scoring started with a Will Stellmacher goal 4:48 into 1st period and game tied at one headed into 2nd.

Springs damage came in a 2nd period flurry, notching three goals in a little over two minute span via Austin Westergaard, Gabe Braun, and Isaac Sabel to take a commanding 4-1 advantage.

Ledgers squandered any chance of New Richmond comeback with an early 3rd period goal from Armani Fisher, the star of their previous semifinals. Westergaard answered a late Tigers goal with an empty netter at 14:41 mark to cap off a 6-2 victory in state final.

It was an mpressive showing for St. Marys Springs senior goaltender Brendan Gaertig notching 41 saves.

After winning it all last season, Luxemburg-Casco’s wrestling team had one goal in mind: doing it all over again this year.

Though some matches came down to the wire, the Spartans took down St. Croix Falls 36-19 to claim their 14th state championship.

Caitlin Clark has joked about being nicknamed “Ponytail Pete” in recognition of how her game resembles that of “Pistol Pete” Maravich.

On Sunday in her last regular-season home game, the Owa star passed the LSU and NBA legend for the most points scored by a Division I basketball player, men’s or women’s.

On senior day at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Clark entered the game against Big Ten regular-season champion Ohio State needing 18 points to pass Maravich, who scored 3,667 points in his three seasons at LSU from 1967 to 1970.

She did that in the first half and then finished the game with 35 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds in No. 6 Iowa’s 93-83 victory over No. 2 Ohio State. It ended the 15-game winning streak of the Buckeyes, avenged Iowa’s overtime loss at Ohio State in January and put Clark at 3,685 career points. The Buckeyes (25-4) and Hawkeyes (26-4) are the top two seeds in the Big Ten tournament and could meet again next week in Minneapolis.

Clark got the record in a rather improbable way. After Clark missed a 3-pointer on her last shot attempt of the first half, the Hawkeyes had one more chance at the basket after an Ohio State miss. Iowa’s Hannah Stuelke was fouled by Madison Greene, and then a technical foul was called on the Buckeyes’ Cotie McMahon.

After Stuelke hit two free throws, Clark stepped to the line with 0.3 seconds left needing both free throws to reach 18 points. She hit both to pass Maravich and give Iowa a 48-39 lead at halftime.

It has been a record-setting season for Clark, who announced Thursday that she would not use the COVID-19 waiver from 2020-21 for a fifth season at Iowa and instead would enter the 2024 WNBA draft.

The Wisconsin Herd, NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost to the Maine Celtics 105-103

The Maine Celtics’ top scorer was DJ Steward with 25 points followed by Jordan Walsh with 20 points.

The Milwaukee Bucks, NBA affiliate of the Wisconsin Herd, have signed Jaylin Galloway to a Two-Way contract.

A 6-7 forward, Galloway has spent the last four seasons playing with the Sydney Kings of the National Basketball League in Australia. This season, the 21-year-old appeared in 23 games (14 starts) with the Kings and averaged 10.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 53.8% from the field. He was named one of three finalists for the NBL’s Most Improved Player Award this season after doubling his scoring average from the previous season.

Overall, Galloway played in 76 games with Sydney over the past four seasons and was a two-time NBL champion. He went undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft and was part of the Timberwolves’ Summer League roster this past summer.

The Charlotte Hornets have signed Wisconsin Herd center Marques Bolden to a Two-Way contract.

Bolden originally signed a 10-day contract with the Hornets on Feb. 20 and appeared in one game before signing a two-way contract. Over this season, Bolden has appeared in 31 games (26 starts) for the Herd averaging 13.3 points (55.4 FG%, 40.4 3P%, 74.3 FT%), 7.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.6 blocks in 25.0 minutes per game. Before joining the Herd, Bolden’s NBA G League experience

included two seasons (2019-21) with the Cleveland Charge and two seasons (2021-23) with the Salt Lake City Stars. Over his career, he has appeared in 10 NBA games with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks and Charlotte Hornets.

Lebron James continues to extend his NBA career to uncharted territory, reaching 40,000 career points Saturday night at Crypto.com Arena.

James came into the Los Angeles Lakers’game against the Denver Nuggets needing nine points to reach the mark. He got there with a driving layup at the 10:39 mark of the second quarter.

“I feel like I’m still that threat out on the floor and I am still able to do the things that I was doing 10 years ago,” James said after the Lakers’ 124-114 loss “And some things I was doing 20 years ago, which is weird to say.”

James finished with 26 points, putting his career total at 40,017 career points.

Move over, John Ross. There’s a new 40-yard dash king at the NFL Scouting Combine.

On his second try Saturday evening, Texas WR Xavier Worthy blazed a 4.21 40, breaking Ross’ previous record of 4.22 seconds, set back in 2017.

Worthy stepped up for his first 40-yard dash in Indy and delivered a heater: 4.25 seconds. The stirring sprint got a big response from the Lucas Oil Stadium crowd, unofficially topping Clemson CB Nate Wiggins’ Friday time of 4.28 seconds for the best mark of the 2024 event.

But Worthy was not done, wanting to take down Ross’ all-time mark. And on his second attempt, the 5-foot-11 1/4, 165-pound Worthy delivered an unofficial time of 4.22 seconds, sending a buzz through the stadium. A short time later, the official time came through: 4.21, breaking the record. Worthy’s 1.49-second 10-yard split was also tops at this year’s event.

To be fair, Ross was 23 pounds heavier than Worthy when he broke Chris Johnson’s record of 4.24 seconds seven years ago
