3/30/24 NFDL Police Officer Cleared in Fatal Shooting

30 March 2024 News

The Winnebago County District Attorney has decided not to file criminal charges against a North Fond du Lac Police officer involved in a fatal shooting February 2nd.  At approximately 9:40 pm that evening, North Fond du Lac Police Sergeant Bryce LaLuzerne initiated a traffic stop in North Fond du Lac stopping Lawrence Drennan. Drennan fled in his vehicle leading to a pursuit. A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy deployed a tire deflation device on Interstate 41 near County Highway Z about a half-mile into Winnebago County causing the vehicle to stop. Drennan called 911 and reported he had a gun. He exited the vehicle and approached law enforcement. LaLuzerne discharged his gun, striking Drennan. Life saving measures was performed but Drennan died from his injuries at the scene. An autopsy revealed Drennan’s blood alcohol level was more than two times the legal limit. District Attorney Eric Sparr said in his decision, “Drennan’s desire to get officers to shoot him was clear.” Sparr added that Drennan seemed aware that creating the belief he had a gun and aggressively moving towards officers would pressure them to shoot him. LaLuzerne had been on administrative leave.
