LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS URGES NO VOTES ON STATEWIDE REFERENDUM

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin is urging voters to vote no next Tuesday on a statewide referendum that would affect elections in the state. Specifically it proposed two constitutional amendments. The first question would reduce the options for municipal governments looking for outside sources of funding for elections without providing alternative resources. League Executive Director Debra Cronmiller says private funding during the 2020 elections helped to pay for protective equipment necessary during the pandemic and did not fund any partisan efforts. She says municipalities and counties need options to pay for all the things necessary to stage an election. She says the second question is vague and would likely result in a legal challenge because it limits who could help out election officials. She says people who service voting equipment, those who provide rides to the polls, even the League itself would suffer under that limitation. She says both questions should have been handled through the legislative process and codified into law.
