CITY OF GREEN LAKE REFERENDUM

Voters in the City of Green Lake on April 2nd will have the opportunity to ensure the services they’ve come to expect will remain in place. In 2008 a mistake was made on a financial work sheet for the state. The debt service was overstated which kept the tax levy limit lower than it should have been. Municipalities are only allowed to increase their levy depending on net new construction growth. Inflation outpaces that growth. The City will be asking to increase the anticipated levy of $1.1 million to $1.9 million for 2025 to put the levy at where it should be and maintain that level with increases for growth. Mayor Ray Radis says without the increase they will have to look at cutting services. He says the increase would set the city up for the next couple of decades. Radis says people at the State Capitol are reluctant to help out smaller cities by allowing for tax levies that keep up with rising costs. Mayor Radis says they’ve sent out mailers about the referendum and held two town hall meetings including one this past Saturday. There is also plenty of information available on their website.

REPRESENTATIVE DALLMAN ON LAKE WATER LEVEL WOES

State Representative Alex Dallman would like to see the DNR do a better job of managing water levels on Buffalo Lake and Lake Puckaway. The state lawmaker from Green Lake says Buffalo Lake has seen drastic, low-water levels due to the DNR choosing to use a nearly 50-year-old water level order. Local residents and businesses continue to struggle as lake levels remain extremely low. He says by publicizing the issue he hopes to gain a little more cooperation from those in the upper reaches of the DNR. He says the lower water levels on Lake Puckaway are contributing to the spread of the aquatic plant invasive species the Eurasian Milfoil. He feels working with the DNR something could be done about the plant. He is urging the DNR to start making the problems on Buffalo Lake and Lake Puckaway a priority.
