BALLWEG KINSHIP BILL SIGNED INTO LAW

Among the 15 bills Governor Tony Evers signed into law last Thursday was Senator Joan Ballweg’s kinship care bill. The bill expands the state’s kinship care program to include ‘like-kin’. The legislation defines like-kin as an individual who has a significant emotional connection with a child or the child’s family that is similar to a familial relationship and who is not and has not previously been the child’s licensed foster parent. The bill was supported by children and family organizations in Wisconsin as well as the tribal nations in the state. The state lawmaker from Markesan says, “This legislation will be especially impactful for teens in Wisconsin who are in need of guardianship.” She says it also provides clarity for the placement, when necessary, of Native American children.

THE FULL STOP

Fond du Lac County’s Veteran Services Officer says one of the most difficult things for someone who has been in military service a long time is what he calls the “Full Stop.”  David Tellefsen was in the Marine Corps for 22 years. He says you get to the point where a lot of people depend on you and it is reflected in the phone calls, text messages, and emails you receive. He says when you leave the service it comes to a “Full Stop” and this is hard not to notice. He says the thing you miss most isn’t the routine, but the people. He says making the transition to civilian life isn’t easy for everyone and dealing with veterans benefits and claims can be frustrating for veterans. He says that’s where his office comes in. He urges any veteran that needs help to reach out to his office by calling 920-929-3117.

DIET AND EXERCISE

The System Medical Director for Employee Well-Being for SSM Health says recent news about the effectiveness of weight-loss drugs may sound encouraging, but those drugs aren’t something you can just purchase over the counter.  Dr. Heather Schmidt says when developing drugs for diabetics drug makers found a side-effect was weight loss. She says they rebranded the drugs, but kept the same active ingredient. She says you will need a prescription for them, which will require seeing your primary care physician. She recommends a combination of diet and exercise and to be patient with your results. Dr. Schmidt says most health care providers have nutritionists and others that can help you. She notes the Ripon Wellness Center has a team that can help people out with their weight loss efforts.

MURRAY PARK TRAIL BUNNY HOP

The Ripon Early Bird Kiwanis and Ripon’s Parks and Recreation Department are partnering for the Murray Park Trail Bunny Hop this Sunday at the park. It’s from 1 to 2:30 pm and it is for children 2 to 10 years old. Parks and Recreation Director Ashton Zeien says in the past they’ve done a drive through event at Barlow Park, but this year’s version is more interactive for the children. There will be 15 booths children can collect goodies from. They will be helped along by signage on the trail and will get a little exercise along the way. There is no cost for children to participate. Zeien says area mascots including Webbie from Webster’s, the Ripon High School Tiger, the Ripon College Red Hawk, Olaf, and of course the Easter Bunny will be part of the fun.
