General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced Monday that the Green Bay Packers have released RB Aaron Jones.
“We want to thank Aaron for his unwavering commitment to the Packers and the community over the past seven seasons,” added Gutekunst. “It is certainly one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make in my time with the Packers and not one taken lightly. He has not only had a significant impact on the field and in the locker room, but he is one of the most beloved players in the community. We wish nothing but the best for Aaron and his entire family moving forward.”
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero report the Green Bay Packers are expected to sign Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs. An hour later, Pelissero reported the Packers are releasing running back Aaron Jones, citing sources again.
Jacobs had three seasons with over 1,000 yards rushing since he was a first-round draft pick in 2019. He was the NFL’s top rusher in 2022 with 1,653 yards and he’s never had a season with fewer than 800.
Bleacher Reports’ Timothy Rapp says the Las Vegas Raiders were trying to sign Jacobs back on, but his intentions were elsewhere.
The Packers will release Jones to become a free agent, according to Pelissero. He had three seasons rushing for more than 1,000 yards but was sidelined with hamstring and knee injuries last year.
He came back in time for the end of the Packers’ season, rushing for 112 yards or more in each of the last three games, which helped them earn a spot in the playoffs.
Free agency negotiations started at 11 a.m. Central Monday and ink can start going on the contracts on Wednesday.
The Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team, led by Callie Genke off the bench, defeated Purdue Fort Wayne 64-55 in the 2024 Barbasol Horizon League Semifinals on Monday.
Genke led all scorers with 16 points, while Maddy Schreiber added 13 points for the Phoenix.
Cassie Schiltz became just the 38th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points after she drilled a three with 8:49 to go in the third quarter.
The Phoenix will face Cleveland State tomorrow at 11 a.m. CST in a rematch of last year’s HLWBB Championship Game and the game will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
The Neenah high school boys basketball team added on to their record by advancing to the WIAA state tournament for the 30th time.
The Rockets defeated Marshfield, 52-48, on Saturday in a Division 1 Sectional Final to advance for the third straight year.
Even after making back-to-back state tournament appearances coming into this year, it wasn’t always a given that the Rockets would get back after starting the year 4-6. But they found their stride at the right time, as they are winners of 13 straight entering the state tournament.
“Really, it was just our effort,” senior guard Charlie Wunderlich said about the team’s turnaround. “Everyone’s effort and attitude just got 100% better. We knew we weren’t that bad of a team at the beginning of the year. We knew we were gonna get better. Everyone’s belief in us and the effort is what got us here.”
The Rockets last won it all just two years ago and with two more wins, they will earn the fifth gold ball in program history.
The Rockets are looking for revenge in their first game at the tournament as they’ll take on Arrowhead, who knocked them out last year, on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Former Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones has agreed to a deal to stay in the NFC North with the Minnesota Vikings.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pellissero, Jones is signing a one-year contract worth $7 million.
Jones follows a line of former Packers who made the move to the Twin Cities, including Brett Favre, Greg Jennings, Ryan Longwell, Za’Darius Smith, Desmond Bishop, Bryce Paup, Robert Ferguson, Darren Sharper, Matt Snider, and Dean Lowry.
Jones holds the Packers team record for average yards per carry and his 5.49-yard average on 201 carries in 2020 broke Jim Taylor’s 1962 record.
Jones also ranks third in franchise history in rushing yards, 100-yard rushing games, and 1,000-yard rushing seasons, along with being fourth in both rushing attempts and rushing touchdowns.
The Packers say he’s the only player in NFL history to exceed 250 receptions, 5,000 rushing yards, 2,000 receiving yards, 45 rushing touchdowns, at least 5 yards average per carry, and 15 receiving touchdowns in their first 7 seasons.
