Giannis Antetokounmpo had 24 points and 10 rebounds and the Milwaukee Bucks swept the four-game season series with Charlotte, beating the Hornets 111-99 on Thursday night to finish a home-and-home set.

Malik Beasley added 19 points – hitting five 3-pointers – and Bobby Portis had 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Bucks shot 16 of 39 from beyond the arc to give coach Doc Rivers his first four-game winning streak with the team.

The Bucks thrashed the Hornets by an average of 29.2 points this season – the largest margin in team history – after outscoring them by 38, 36 and 31 in the other three games. This game was closer, but not by much.

Milwaukee shot 55% in the first half, including 9 of 18 on 3s, to build a 19-point lead at the break and was seriously challenged in the second half.

The Bucks have moved the ball extremely well during their four-game winning emphasizing extra passes to turn good shots into great ones. Portis said that is a reflection on Rivers’ leadership.

Brandon Miller led the Hornets with 21 points and Miles Bridges added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bucks are at Chicago on Friday night to play the Bulls.

In the Boys State Hockey Tournament #2 seeded St. Mary’s Springs punched a ticket to their fourth championship game appearance in five years with a 2-1 win over #3 River Falls. Junior forward Armani Fisher’s 2nd goal of the game at the 10:32 mark gave Springs the winning margin of victory.

The goaltending on both sides was excellent. There were 21 saves alone for the Ledgers in the first period. Springs senior goaltender Brendan Gaertig had 27 saves.

Springs advances to Saturday’s championship at 9:30am against defending champion New Richmond.

After winning their first spring training game under new manager Pat Murphy, the Brewers have lost five straight, losing 7-5 Thursday to the Rangers. Milwaukee led 3-2 after four innings before Texas scored three runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. The Brewers bounded back with two in the seventh, but the Rangers scored two in the bottom of the frame for the final margin of victory.

Milwaukee shortstop Joey Ortiz hit a two-run homer in the fifth, his first of the spring.

The Brewers host the Padres this afternoon with the first pitch set for 2:10 CT.

In Big Ten men’s basketball Saturday #13 Illinois is at Wisconsin.  Tipoff is at noon.

Also Saturday, #5 Marquette is at #12 Creighton.

On Thursday, Caitlin Clark said she would renounce her extra year of NCAA eligibility allowed under the COVID-19 guidelines and go pro following this season. She is 18 points from passing Pete Maravich’s all-time scoring record, which she’ll like do on Sunday in the regular season finale at home against #2 Ohio State..

It was a decision expected, but not assured, and one that is a near-perfect scenario for all parties. Assuming the Fever pick her first, Clark will stay in the Midwest within an easy drive of the rabid Iowa fans who have sold out arenas all over the country. The WNBA will acquire a made-for-household-TV marketing giant they’ve never before had. And, most importantly for everyone, the Fever will pair a generational point guard with a generational post to become a long-term, quality league contender.

Both the Green Bay Phoenix men’s and women’s basketball team were road warriors on Wednesday night as the men upset Cleveland State 69-61, while the women were victorious by a virtually identical score, 70-61.

The men, playing without leading scorer Noah Reynolds for the third straight game, ended a three-game losing skid. With the victory, the Phoenix clinched a top-four spot in the conference. They will host a Horizon League Tournament quarterfinal game at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 7.

Four players scored in double figures, led by Marcus Hall’s 12 points. Elijah Jones had his fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Will Eames and Foster Wonders each had 11 points.

The women also had four player in double figures, as they’ve won seven in a row, pulling themselves into a tie for first in conference with Cleveland State.

Three players scored 14 points: Jasmine Kondrakiewicz, Natalie McNeal, and Callie Genke. They led by 17 points after the first

The Phoenix women will also host a conference tournament quarterfinal game on March 7th at 5:30 p.m.

The Ripon College Red Hawks are headed back to the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament for the third time in five seasons and the sixth time in program history. Ripon swept the Midwest Conference (MWC) regular season and tournament titles this season to claim the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. With an overall record of 19-8 (14-2 MWC), Ripon will meet Hope College (24-3, 15-1 MIAA) in a first-round matchup on Friday, March 1, at the DePauw University Neal Fieldhouse in Greencastle, Indiana, with the tipoff at 5:00.

The Red Hawks come into the game at 19-8 overall and 14-2 in conference action and have won two straight. The nationally-ranked (No. 7 WBCA/No. 9 D3hoops.com) Flying Dutch received an at-large bid to the tournament field. This season, Hope won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) regular season championship for the fifth straight year and finished as the runner-up to the league’s tournament title. This marks Hope’s sixteenth NCAA postseason appearance in the last seventeen seasons, including its program’s third NCAA Championship season in 2022. The winner of Friday’s first round game will take on the winner of host DePauw University (21-7) and Berea College (24-3) on Saturday, March 2.

Also, on Friday the U-W Oshkosh women’s team meets Webster University (Mo.) in the NCAA Division III Championship in first round action. The Titans are 22-5 overall and 12-2 in the conference.

Gov. Tony Evers signed a bill Thursday that raises the cost for bow and crossbow deer hunting licenses for out-of-state residents.

The Republican-authored measure raises the cost of the licenses by an additional $35 to $200. The state Department of Natural Resources estimates the increase will generate an additional $543,200 annually for the state’s fish and wildlife account.

The DNR has projected that dwindling license sale revenue will leave the account with a nearly $16 million deficit heading into the next state budget.

The Senate and Assembly both passed the bill unanimously earlier this month.
