Anthony Edwards had 26 points and nine assists and the Minnesota Timberwolves shot 21 of 41 from 3-point range to trounce the slumping Milwaukee Bucks 129-105 on Thursday night.

“It feels great to make some shots, take some shots and make some shots,” Edwards said. “It was a better feeling to see my teammates make a lot of shots and take confident shots and keep shooting them, keep shooting open shots and playing their game.”

Karl-Anthony Towns scored 19 points, Mike Conley added 18, Naz Reid 17 and Rudy Gobert 16 as the Timberwolves spoiled the home debut of new Bucks coach Doc Rivers, whose No. 31 Marquette jersey hangs from the Fiserv Forum rafters.

Rivers opened his Milwaukee coaching tenure with a five-game trip during which the Bucks went 1-4.

The Bucks were operating at far less than full strength.

Damian Lillard missed a second straight game and Khris Middleton also was out because of their sprained ankles, though Brook Lopez returned after missing three games as his wife gave birth to their child.

A.J. Green scored a career-high 27 points for the Bucks while shooting 7 of 8 from 3-point range. Jae Crowder had 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists – all season highs. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 17 points and seven assists

Both teams had short benches after making deals before Thursday’s trade deadline.

The Bucks sent Cam Payne and a second-round pick to the Philadelphia 76ers for Patrick Berverley, while Minnesota dealth Troy Brown, Shake Milton and a second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons for Monte Morris. Neither Beverley nor Morris was available for Thursday night’s game.

Bucks: Host the Charlotte Hornets on Friday.

The 49ers and the Chiefs square off in Super Bowl XVIII in Las Vegas Sunday. Kansas City will try to repeat as Super Bowl Champs.

Lamar Jackson’s ‘s emphatic finish to the 2023 season has earned him the NFL’s greatest honor.

The Ravens quarterback was named 2023 NFL Most Valuable Player on Thursday at NFL Honors at Resorts World, marking the second time he’s won the award after he took home the honor following the 2019 season.

Jackson’s award was one of the least surprising of all honors distributed on Thursday, as he garnered 493 points with 49 of 50 first-place votes. Bills quarterback Josh Allen took home the only other first-place votes and was fifth overall with 80 points. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (152) was second, 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey (147) was third and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was fourth with 97 points.

The 27-year-old Jackson became the second-youngest player to win multiple MVPs, sneaking past Brett Favre and Patrick Mahonmes by mere months into a place behind Jim Brown, who had two MVPs in his trophy case before he’d turned 23. It’s elite company, which Jackson certainly deserved to join.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024 was revealed on Thursday night during NFL Honors, with seven individuals (five modern-era candidates and two senior finalists) receiving the Canton call.

  • Julius Peppers, DE: Carolina Panthers, 2002-09, 2017-18; Chicago Bears, 2010-13; Green Bay Packers, 2014-16.
  • Randy Gradishar *, LB: Denver Broncos, 1974-1983.
  • Devis Hester, PR/KR/WR: Chicago Bears, 2006-2013; Atlanta Falcons, 2014-15; Baltimore Ravens, 2016; Seattle Seahawks, 2016.
  • Andre Johnson, WR: Houston Texans, 2003-2014; Indianapolis Colts, 2015 ; Tennessee Titans, 2016.
  • Steve McMichael, DT: New England Patriots, 1980; Chicago Bears, 1981-1993; Green Bay Packers, 1994.
  • Patrick Willis, LB: San Francisco 49ers, 2007-2014.

Peppers played 3 years in Green Bay, but helped the Packers get to 2 NFC Championship games and was a Pro Bowler the one year Green Bay didn’t make it that far.

49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has been named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year. The award was announced Thursday night as part of the NFL Honors Ceremony.

It’s not a huge surprise McCaffrey won the award, which has become a de facto non-quarterback MVP award in an era where the MVP is almost exclusively a QB award. McCaffrey was also a top-five MVP finisher.

This season the 49ers star RB led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards. He was also the league leader in scrimmage yards (2,023) and touches (339), and tied for the league lead with 21 total touchdowns. McCaffrey was rewarded with a Pro Bowl trip, a First-Team All-Pro nod, an NFC Offensive Player of the Week award and two Offensive Player of the Month awards.

The diehard fans of the Green and Gold have a member of the NFL’s elite fans in their midst.

Packers fan and You Tuber Tom Grossi has been named the NFL Fan of the Year at the NFL Honors show, selected out of a pool of 32 nominated fans. Grossi will join the other 31 nominees at Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Tom Grossi is originally from New York, but started his Packers fandom at age six after he heard about the Packers beating the Cowboys and went home to proclaim his new favorite team to his Cowboys fan father.

Since then, Grossi hasn’t missed a Packers game, and shares his passion for the team on his “Packast”, the YouTube podcast he advertises as “the podcast where you don’t have to be a Packers fan, but it sure does help.”

He’s turned his love for the Packers and football into what he calls “Chaotic Good”: acts of kindness done without recognition, with the end goal of making someone’s day better. Grossi has raised over $725k for various charities since 2021, undertaking efforts such as visiting every NFL stadium in 30 days to raise money for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Along the way, he highlighted each team’s fanbase and local restaurants and venues.

Grossi, a former high school social studies teacher.

Caitlin Clark moved to within 39 points of breaking the NCAA women’s basketball scoring record on Thursday — but for the first time in nearly a year, she didn’t lead the Iowa Hawkeyes  in scoring.

Clark had 27 points and a season-high 15 assists, many of them to sophomore forward Stuelke.  Stuelke scored 47 points on 17 of 20 shooting from the field. It is the program’s second-highest single-game total behind the 48 points of Megan Gustafson, , now with the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, against Minnesota in 2018.

Stuelke’s total is one more than Clark’s career high of 46 points, set againstMichigan in 2022. Asked if she minded Stuelke passing her on that list, Clark laughed and said, “Not at all. She can have it.”

Clark is on track to be on top of the NCAA list soon if all goes well. It could come as early as Sunday, when the Hawkeyes travel to face Nebraska at 1 p.m. ET. Clark has 11 games of 40 or more points in her career, three of them this season. Plus, the senior has scored at least 30 points in every career matchup with Nebraska.
