Wyndham Clark was declared the winner of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after extensive wind and rain forced the PGA to cancel the final day of play.
The 30-year-old American was six shots behind before hitting a 12-under-par 60 on Saturday to take the lead on the third day. He finished on 17-under par, one shot clear of Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg and two shots ahead of France’s Matthieu Pavon after 54 holes.
Strong wind and rain had postponed the final round to Monday, but a statement from the PGA Tour late on Sunday said after consulting the Monterey County emergency authorities and out of an “abundance of caution” for spectators and players, there would be no further play.
Clark said: “It’s pretty surreal right now. It’s maybe not the way you dream of winning. With that said, a lot of us yesterday (Saturday) had, not that we knew, but we definitely had this outside shot and thinking that maybe this is our last round.”
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday dismissed concerns about the turf his team will practice on at UNLV this week ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII bout versus the Kansas City Chiefs.
“Not worried about it at all — it is what it is. We here, we won’t change anything,” Shanahan said during Opening Night at Allegiant Stadium.
Earlier in the day, ESPN reported that members of the Niners’ organization were not happy with the practice field.
Shanahan noted when talking to reporters that the condition of the field has improved each day.
When asked about the field during his Monday new conference, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell noted that experts and the NFL Players Association unanimously approved the turf.
“That work is being done every single day,” Goodell said. “We had 23 experts out there. We had the union out there. All of them think that’s a very playable surface. It’s softer than what they have practiced on, but that happens. It’s well within all of our testing standards. It’s something that we think all our experts, as well as neutral field inspectors, have all said unanimously that it’s a playable field.”
The 49ers’ first true practice of the week will take place on Wednesday.
The San Francisco Giants acquired left-hander Ethan Small from Milwaukee for cash on Monday after the Brewers designated him for assignment last week.
Small, who turns 27 on Feb. 14, has appeared in four major league games, including two starts, and owns an 8.71 ERA. He recorded one save and gave up five runs over four innings in two appearances with Milwaukee last season.
Small spent most of the 2023 season with the Brewers’ Triple-A Nashville affiliate, where 36 of his 38 appearances came out of the bullpen. He went 2-4 with a 3.18 ERA and three saves while posting 61 strikeouts and 24 walks over 51 innings at Nashville.
The Brewers designated Small for assignment on Thursday to create room on their 40-man roster after acquiring infielder Joey Ortiz and left-handed pitcher DL Hall in the trade that sent 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles.
Mississippi’s state auditor filed court papers Monday renewing his call for Brett Favre to repay the state for welfare money that the auditor says was improperly spent on projects backed by the retired NFL quarterback.
Auditor Shad White’s demand of nearly $730,000 from Favre is the latest twist in a long-running legal battle over money that was supposed to help some of the poorest people in one of the poorest states in the nation.
Favre, a Pro Football Hall of Fame member who lives in Mississippi, filed lawsuits in February 2023 accusing White and two national sportscasters of defaming him in public discussions about welfare misspending.
White said in 2020 that Favre had improperly received $1.1 million in speaking fees from a nonprofit organization that spent welfare with approval from the Mississippi Department of Human Services. The money from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program was to go toward a volleyball arena at the University of Southern Mississippi. Favre agreed to lead fundraising efforts for the facility at his alma mater, where his daughter started playing on the volleyball team in 2017.
Favre repaid $500,000 to the state in May 2020 and $600,000 in October 2021, but the new court filing said he still owes $729,790 because interest caused growth in the original amount he owed.
