Marquette didn’t need Tyler Kolek down the stretch to breeze to its third straight blowout victory Wednesday night.  Now the fifth-ranked Golden Eagles must hope they won’t be without the reigning Big East player of the year much longer.

Kam Jones had 17 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as Marquette rolled to a 91-69 triumph over Providence despite playing most of the second half without Kolek, who left the game with an oblique injury.

Marquette coach Shaka Smart said after the game he didn’t know the extent of the injury.

Kolek headed into the tunnel with just over 15 minutes left as Marquette led 60-37. He soon returned to the bench and checked into the game before exiting again about 12 seconds later. The Golden Eagles, up 20 at that point, were just fine without him.

Kolek finished with 12 points and six assists in his 17 ½ minutes. David Joplin scored 13, while Chase Ross and Stevie Mitchell added 12 points each as Marquette (22-6, 13-4) never trailed and won for the 11th time in 12 games.

Marquette grabbed a 27-4 lead in the first 9 ½ minutes and never looked back. Marquette is at No. 12 Creighton on Saturday.

The Milwaukee Bucks are back in action tonight in Charlotte against the Hornets in a back-to-back matchup.  The Bucks won at home Tuesday night over the Hornets 123-85, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 24 points while Damian Lillard scored 23 and Bobby Portis Jr. chipped in with 21.

Milwaukee has won three straight since the All-Star break to improve to 6-7 under coach Doc Rivers while allowing under 100 points in four of their last seven games.

The Wisconsin Herd, NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost to the Capital City Go-Go 120-115.
Milwaukee Bucks two-way players TyTy Washington Jr. (22 points) and Ryan Rollins (18 points) led the Herd in scoring. Wenyen Gabriel added a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Capital City’s top scorer was Jared Butler with 21 points followed by Jules Bernard with 17 points.

The Herd will return home for a back-to-back series against the Maine Celtics starting Friday, March 1st with tip-off at 7:00 p.m. CST.

It appears Preston Smith will be staying in Green Bay for another season. That’s as the Packers and the pass rusher reportedly will agree to restructure his contract.

Smith, who could have been a ‘cap casualty’ this offseason, agreed to reduce his contract to $10 million dollars for this season, according to Field Yates of ESPN. The NFL Network is also reporting Smith could make as much as $4 million dollars in incentives this season.

Last year finished with eight sacks, and was third on the team with 52 QB pressures behind only Kenny Clark and Rashan Gary.

The Packers currently have $9 million dollars in cap space after restructuring the contracts of Smith and Gary, according to Over the Cap.

The Cubs beat the Brewers in Cactus League action on Wednesday at Maryvale 6-1. It was 1-0 until the 6th inning when Chicago erupted for four runs to take a 5-1 lead.

After winning their first game under new manager Pat Murphy, the Brewers have dropped four-in-a- row.  Milwaukee is at Texas today.

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark continues to set records.  Last night her eighth and final three-pointer of the game broke the women’s Division I scoring record held by Lynette Woodard  as Iowa powered past the Gophers in Minneapolis 108-60.

Clark finished with 33 points, the exact number she needed to pass Woodard’s career mark of 3,649. Afterward, Iowa coach Lisa Bluder called that “the real record” in a fiery nod to Woodard and other greats who played in the days before the NCAA recognized women’s basketball.

She scored Iowa’s first 15 points, making her first five shots. In the second quarter, she hit her first two attempts—a pair of threes—to push her total to 21 points, more than the 16 the entire Gophers team had scored.  Clark needs 18 points to pass LSU’s Pete Maravich as the all-time leading college basketball scorer.

Clark sat at 30 points going into the fourth quarter. With the clock ticking down, some in the crowd seemed a little restless, especially when Clark passed up some open shots. There were 4 minutes, 29 seconds left in the game when she casually dribbled, stepped back and let the ball fly, making a milestone look easy.

She finished with her 17th triple-double of her career, adding 12 assists and 10 rebounds. She paced a hot-shooting Iowa attack with eight three-pointers on 14 attempts, as the Hawkeyes buried the Gophers under a barrage of threes. Iowa was 22 of 39 from beyond the arc and shot 62% overall.

Clark also broke the NCAA single-season record for three-pointers—she has 156—and scored 20 or more points for the 114th time in 129 career games.

The Green Bay Packers have announced plans to increase Lambeau Field ticket prices for the 2024 season.

According to the team, regular-season tickets will go up between $4 and $10 per game, depending on seat location. Preseason tickets will increase between $2 and $5 per game. Variable pricing will again be used for preseason and regular-season Green Bay Packers games, the team said.

The Packers remind season ticket holders that invoices have been sent and are now available to both view and pay. Invoices must be paid by credit/debit card or check. Payment is due in the Packers’ ticket office by March 29.

One of the biggest changes this offseason for the Packers has been the hiring of new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, who is taking the unit from 3-4 scheme to a 4-3. Hafley is confident they have the players in house that they can make that switch. But they could always get a few more here at the draft. Brian Gutekunst Tuesday talking with the media and talking about how versatility is key with the new defensive coordinator and the players he will utilize.

“More just the conversations of what he saw on our roster and where he wanted to take it,” Gutekunst said. “Those will continue on as he gets to know our players better. I’m sure a lot of his thoughts are going to evolve. Especially when he gets his hands on them, and gets to meet with them and work them. My end of it, we are really a supportive role and making sure we have everything we need to play the way we want to play.”

One of the biggest needs right now is at safety. Gutekunst saying it doesn’t need to be a veteran coming in, it could be a rookie to let the young guys grow together. Maybe they can find that player, the right player, here at the Combine this week. The Packers GM is at the NFL Scouting Combine this week.

Cherry Starr, the widow of legendary Green Bay quarterback Bart Starr, has passed away. Her son told us she passed peacefully Tuesday morning. She was 89 years old.

Starr made her final trip to Green Bay in 2022 for a Packers Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

At the time, Alan Loux, the president of Rawhide Youth Services, which was founded in part by Bart and Cherry Starr, said it was due to her age, health issues, and the difficulty of making the trip between Green Bay and her home in Birmingham, Alabama. Before the induction, she visited Rawhide, where she saw the new Starr Youth Home. She attended the groundbreaking in 2021.

The Chiefs are releasing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, saving the team $12 million against their salary cap, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Wednesday. The move comes after the Chiefs informed cornerback L’Jarius Sneed they are prepared to use the franchise tag on him and are open to consummating a trade if no long-term deal is reached, a source told Fowler on Tuesday.

The Chiefs are expected to use the nonexclusive franchise tag, which would cost about $19 million for the 2024 season. Valdes-Scantling played two seasons with the Chiefs after signing as a free agent from the Green Bay Packers. He caught 42 passes in 2022 and 21 last season but often had his biggest moments in the playoffs.

He caught eight passes for 116 yards and a touchdown in the AFC Championship Game victory over the Cincinnati Bengals after the 2022 season. Last season he caught a pass to secure the Chiefs’ AFC Championship Game win over the Baltimore Ravens and had the Chiefs’ first touchdown in their Super Bowl LVIII victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Valdes-Scantling was fifth in receptions on the Chiefs in the 2023 regular season. Rookie Rashee Rice was their leader at the position with 79 catches.
