22 February 2024 Sports

From Wayne Mausser:

Tyler Kolek had a school-record 18 assists, Kam Jones scored a career-high 34 points and No. 7 Marquette bounced back from its most-lopsided loss of the season to rout DePaul 105-71 on Wednesday night.

Marquette (20-6, 11-4 Big East) returned to form four nights after an 81-53 loss at No. 1 UConn that snapped the Golden Eagles’ eight-game winning streak. DePaul (3-23, 0-15) has lost 15 straight by an average margin of 24.1 points.

After Marquette’s early 24-2 run, the only suspense remaining was whether Kolek would stay on the floor long enough to break the school’s 29-year-old assists record of 17 set by Tony Miller against Memphis on March 4, 1995.

Kolek, the reigning Big East player of the year, surpassed that mark while committing only two turnovers. He attempted only two shots and finished with three points.

Kolek tied the record by finding David Joplin for a dunk that gave Marquette an 89-48 lead with 9:54 remaining. Kolek got his 18th assist on an inbounds pass to Jones, who sank a 3-pointer that made it 95-52 with 8:31 left.

Jones’ basket also enabled him to surpass his previous career scoring high of 31, which came in a 91-57 triumph at Georgetown on Feb. 3. Jones shot 12 of 15 overall and made 8 of 10 3-point attempts.

Kolek and Jones both left the game for good with just over eight minutes left.

Oso Ighodaro added 15 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for Marquette, which shot 59.5% from the floor as a team.

DePaul’s Jaden Henley and Elijah Fisher had 19 points each. DePaul had 22 turnovers and only six assists.

DePaul has lost its last 27 Big East regular-season games, though the Blue Demons did beat Seton Hall in the first round of last year’s conference tournament. DePaul’s last Big East regular-season victory was a 73-72 win over Xavier on Jan. 18, 2023.

Marquette never trailed and owned a 31-8 lead less than nine minutes into the game, thanks to an early 24-2 run. Jones scored 10 points during that spurt and Chase Ross capped the run by converting a steal into one of his three first-half dunks.

Kolek had 10 assists in the first 12 minutes of the game, getting his 10th on a lob to Ighodaro that extended Marquette’s lead to 37-13. He ended the first half with 13 assists and only one turnover while helping the Golden Eagles grab a 59-29 advantage.

Marquette hosts Xavier on Sunday.

The 14th-ranked UW-Oshkosh women’s basketball team won a WIAC semifinal game over UW-La Crosse  77-52, and St. Norbert skated past Benedictine, 70-53, in the NACC quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

St. Norbert men’s basketball team beat Concordia Chicago 76-60 to advance past the NACC quarterfinals.

In G-League action the Wisconsin Herd will be trying to stretch their winning streak to seven games, as they host the Rip City Remix.  Tipoff at 6:00 from the Oshkosh Arena.

The idea of a 14-team College Football Playoff starting in the 2026 season was discussed at CFP meetings in Dallas on Wednesday, just months before the start of the first season with a 12-team playoff is set to begin.

CFP executive director Bill Hancock acknowledged the idea was discussed but declined to provide specific details, saying, “There’s work still to be done.”

With CFP officials pushing to finalize a deal to consummate a television contract for the next eight years, three lingering issues remain unresolved: access, distribution of money and governance. Hancock said the issues need to be resolved within the next month.

The CFP management committee, which is made up of the commissioners and incoming Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua, met Wednesday and discussed potentially expanding the field after the current contract runs out following the 2025 season.

According to ESPN sources, the most dominant discussion of a new model revolved around a 14-team playoff, and CFP leaders left Wednesday’s meeting feeling there was momentum. The bump from 12 to 14 teams, as opposed to 16, would mostly address the issue of access rather than finances.

Officials will still need to discuss how a 14-team playoff would split up automatic qualifiers — for example, could the Big Ten and SEC get as many as four automatic bids? Those early discussions were had Wednesday, with no definitive conclusions.

Everything, of course, boils down to finances. The Big Ten and SEC have made it clear the next contract will be more financially favorable than the current one, where 80% of the money is split evenly among the Power 5 leagues. Now  there’s four power conferences, and the Big Ten and SEC have a combined 34 teams.

The Charlotte Hornets have signed Wisconsin Herd center Marques Bolden to a 10-day contract. This is the second NBA Call-up for the Herd this season.

Bolden has appeared in 31 games (26 starts) this season for the Herd averaging 13.3 points (55.4 FG%, 40.4 3P%, 74.3 FT%), 7.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.6 blocks in 25.0 minutes per game. Before joining the Herd, Bolden’s NBA G League experience included two seasons (2019-21) with the Cleveland Charge and two seasons (2021-23) with the Salt Lake City Stars. Over his career, he has appeared in nine NBA games with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Milwaukee Bucks, NBA affiliate of the Wisconsin Herd, have signed Ryan Rollins to a Two-Way contract.

A 6-4 guard, Rollins has appeared in 22 games over the last two seasons with the Washington Wizards and Golden State Warriors. Ten of those appearances came this season with the Wizards where he averaged 4.1 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 6.6 minutes per game. Selected with the 44th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of the University of Toledo, Rollins played in 12 games as a rookie with the Warriors.

Rollins has also seen action in 28 NBA G League games over the past two seasons, making 15 starts, and holds NBA G League averages of 17.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 49.9% from the field.
