19 February 2024 Sports

The NBA wanted more competition. It got more points instead — more than ever before.

And once again, the All-Star Game was all offense.

All-Star MVP Damian Lillard of the Milwaukee Bucks scored 39 points and the Eastern Conference beat the Western Conference 211-186 on Sunday night, with the winners putting up the most points in the game’s 73-year history. The previous mark: 196 by the West in 2016.

It was a flurry of records: The total points of 397 smashed the record of 374 set in 2017, while the East made 42 3-pointers to break the mark of 35 set by Team LeBron in 2019. The sides combined for 193 points in the first half to break the any-half record of 191 set last year, and the East tied an any-half record by scoring 104 by intermission.

Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics had 36 and Tyrese Haliburton from the hometown Indiana Pacers finished with 32 for the East, while Antetokounmpo had 23 and Jayson Tatum finished with 20.  Tyree Haliburton hit 5 straight 3-point shots.

Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves scored 50 points for the West in just 28 minutes. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder scored 31 points for the West.

The West scored a ton of points, too: At 186, it had the fourth-most by any team in All-Star history. And obviously, the most ever in a loss.

Among the other records:

— The East tried 97 3-pointers; the previous record was 90 by Team LeBron in 2019.

— The teams combined for 66 3s made and 168 3s attempted (previous records were 62 and 167 in 2019).

— The teams combined for 163 field goals made and 289 attempted (previous records were 162 in 2017 and 286 in 2016).

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and other league executives were seeking a more competitive All-Star Game after last season’s 184-175 matchup was widely panned — and television ratings plummeted.

The 74th NBA All-Star Game is scheduled for Feb. 16, 2025, at Chase Center in San Francisco, the home of the Golden State Warriors. It’ll be the first time for the game in the Bay Area since 2000.

Saturday night, the Bucks Damian Lillard won the 3-point shooting contest and former Oshkosh North star and now with the Indiana Hoosiers Tyrrese Haliburton was on the skills competition. In a battle of the sexes,

Steph Curry won the 3-point competition Saturday night, edging Sabrina Ionescu.

Ionescu went first and came out hot, scoring 26 points, which would have been good enough to make the final in the Starry 3-Point Contest that Damian Lillard won. Ionescu used a WNBA-regulation ball, but she didn’t back down from the challenge of shooting from the NBA line, making her 26 points even more impressive.

But Curry proved why he’s the greatest shooter of all time during his attempt. It was still anyone’s game halfway through Curry’s round, but he caught fire late and sealed the win on his money ball rack, scoring 29 points.

Six shots behind to start the final round of the Genesis Invitational, Hideki Matsuyama delivered a record performance — 9-under 62, the lowest closing round by a winner at Riviera — to achieve the record that really mattered.  He now has nine PGA Tour wins, one better than K.J. Choi of South Korea.

Matsuyama finished at 17-under 267 for a 3-shot victory over Will Zalatoris (69) and Luke List (68). Patrick Cnatlay and Xandeer Schauffele.

The Daytona 500 was cancelled Sunday because of weather conditions and the race has been rescheduled today, weather permitting.

The Xfinity Series teams will kick off the season at 11 a.m. ET. Monday. The Cup Series teams will take part in the Daytona 500. The green flag is scheduled to wave at 4:30 p.m.. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will give the command to start engines at 4:18 p.m.

Joey Logano won the pole for Monday’s Daytona 500 with a lap of 181.947 mph. Michael McDowell posted the second-fastest lap at 181.686 mph.

Tyler Reddick and Christopher Bell will form the second row after winning Thursday’s Daytona 500 qualifying races.

Tony Perkins’ layup with 1.3 seconds left gave Iowa an 88-86 overtime win over No. 20 Wisconsin on Saturday.

Perkins drove the right side of the lane, and nearly had the ball taken away by Wisconsin’s Chucky Hepburn. But Perkins recovered to hit the shot. Iowa’s Payton Sandfort then intercepted Carter Gilmore’s inbounds pass after a timeout to close the win.

Perkins, who scored 18 points, had 16 in the second half and overtime.

Freshman Owen Freeman led the Hawkeyes (15-11, 7-8 Big Ten) with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Freeman and Perkins were among four Hawkeyes who scored in double figures. Sandfort had 18 points. Josh Dix scored 17.

Steven Crowl had 22 points to lead Wisconsin (17-9, 9-6). AJ Storr had 21 points and Hepburn scored 18.

Iowa shot 52.6% for the game, 50% in the second half and in overtime.  Iowa held Wisconsin to 37% shooting in the second half and 42.9% in overtime.

Iowa built a nine-point lead on two occasions in the second half and then went almost six minutes without a field goal. Wisconsin took a 78-76 lead with 1:02 remaining on Tyler Wahl’s layup and then Iowa tied the game on Perkins’ drive with 42 seconds remaining.

Both teams had chances to win the game in the closing seconds of the second half. Hepburn missed a 3-point attempt with 14 seconds left and then Perkins missed on a drive to the basket with two seconds left.

Wisconsin hosts Maryland on Tuesday night.

Donovan Clingan had 17 points and 10 rebounds to help top-ranked UConn rout No. 4 Marquette 81-53 Saturday and take control of the race for the Big East regular-season title.

Tristen Newton added 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Huskies (24-2, 14-1), who have won 14 straight games. Cam Spencer and Hassan Diarra each added 14 points.

Kam Jones scored 15 points and Oso Ighodaro had 14 for Marquette (19-6, 10-4), which came into the game with an eight-game winning streak.

The Huskies now lead the second-place Golden Eagles in the Big East by three games in the loss column with five to play.

The Huskies led by 16 after a strong defensive first half and 18 after a put-back by Tristen Newton to open the second half.

They took their first 20-point lead at 51-30 after an offensive rebound by Newton, who fed Clingan for an emphatic dunk through the lane. UConn built its lead to as many as 29 points in the second half.

The game was tied at 18 before UConn took control. The Huskies held Marquette without a field goal for almost four minutes, went on a 13-0 run late in the half and went into the break leading 42-26.

Marquette opens a three-game homestand against Big East cellar-dweller DePaul on Wednesday.
