From Wayne Mausser

Nikola Jokic spoiled the Milwaukee coaching debut of Doc Rivers by recording his 14th triple-double of the season as the Denver Nuggets surged by the Bucks 113-107 on Monday night.

Jokic finished with 25 points, 16 rebounds and 12 assists, while Jamal Murray added 35 points in helping Denver gain separation during an 8-0 run late in the game.

This game was a chance for Rivers to size up his built-to-win-now squad. Rivers was lured out of his role as an analyst to take over for first-year Bucks coach Adrian Griffin, who was fired after 43 games and a 30-13 record.

Rivers watched his new squad squander an early 13-point lead, fall behind by as many as nine and surge back before Aaron Gordon ended the comeback by blocking a Damian Lillard layup with 24.7 seconds remaining.

The loss kept Rivers on 1,097 wins and one away from tying Larry Brown for the eighth-most among coaches in NBA history.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 29 points and 12 rebounds for the Bucks, who began a five-game trip. The player nicknamed “Greek Freak” played nearly 37 minutes despite dealing with an illness that had his availability up in the air leading into the game. Had he missed the contest, it would’ve been the second straight game where an MVP player didn’t play at Ball Arena. On Saturday, reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid was a late scratch for Philly because of a balky left knee.

But Antetokounmpo treated the capacity crowd to a high-flying exhibition (and called for a 10-second violation on a free throw that electrified the crowd). He was named the NBA player of the week for the East earlier in the day.

Lopez had 19 points, including five of Milwaukee’s 16 3-pointers. Lillard finished with 18 points.

The Bucks Damian Lillard returns to Portland on Wednesday to face his former team. He spent 11 seasons with the Blazers.

The Wisconsin Herd, NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, beat the Osceola Magic 112-110.

Stevie Thompson Jr. powered the Herd with a career-high 27 points while Elijah Hughes added 21 points. Three players posted a double-double including Wenyen Gabriel (21 points, 10 rebounds), Marques Bolden (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Malachi Smith (17 points, 11 rebounds).

The Osceola Magic’s top scorer was Jett Howard with 26 points followed by Alex Morales with 19 points.

The Herd will return home to take on the Westchester Knicks on Thursday, Feb. 1 with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CST.

The top five of the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll remained unchanged Monday with defending national champ UConn still ahead of mighty Purdue, streaking North Carolina, defensive-minded Houston and Tennessee.

There was plenty of chaos in the rest of the poll, where 10 teams moved at least five positions one way or another.

The Huskies were still the clear No. 1, picking up four more first-place votes after a 99-56 rout of Xavier for their eighth straight win. They topped the poll on 48 of 63 ballots from the national panel of media, while the Boilermakers received 14 votes for No. 1 and the Cougars picked up the remaining one.

The Boilermakers remained No. 2 after reigning AP player of the year Zach Edey scored 26 points in a win over Rutgers, which made him only the sixth Big Ten player with at least 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

The third-ranked Tar Heels extended their winning streak to 10 with wins over Wake Forest and Florida State, while the Cougars stymied No. 21 BYU and Kansas State to remain at No. 4. Tennessee beat Vanderbilt to remain fifth.

Wisconsin rode a slew of losses by top-10 teams, and wins over Minnesota and Michigan State to climb seven spots to No. 6 for the Badgers’ best ranking since Dec. 28, 2020. Duke climbed five spots to No. 7, and was followed by Kansas, Marquette #9 and Kentucky, which fell four positions following its loss to South Carolina last week, rounding out the top ten.

Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins says he should have few limitations in his first spring with his new team after missing the entire 2023 season with a torn left ACL.

“I’ll be stoked to get on the field,” Hoskins said Monday in a Zoom news conference after agreeing last week to a $34 million, two-year contract that includes an opt-out after this season. “I’m pretty bored as a competitor in not having played in so long.”

Hoskins injured a knee last March while fielding a grounder in a spring training game with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he had spent his entire major league career before joining the Brewers.

Hoskins, who turns 31 on March 17, should fill a major void for the Brewers as a power-hitting first baseman. Hoskins batted .246 with a .332 on-base percentage, 30 homers and 79 RBIs in 2022, which marked his fourth season with at least 27 homers.

He has a career average of .242 with a .353 on-base percentage, .492 on-base percentage, 148 homers and 405 RBIs in 667 regular-season games. In nine career games at Milwaukee, Hoskins has batted .342 with a .405 on-base percentage, .790 slugging percentage, five homers and eight RBIs.

Hoskins could get $16 million for one season or $48 million over three years as part of his contract. He will get a $12 million salary this year, and the contract includes an $18 million salary for 2025. If Hoskins opts out, he would receive a $4 million buyout payable on Feb. 1, 2026.

If Hoskins doesn’t opt out, the deal includes an $18 million mutual option for 2026. If that option is declined, Hoskins would receive a $4 million buyout payable on Feb. 1, 2026.

The Brewers didn’t get much production at first base last season as they won the NL Central despite having a .705 OPS that ranked 14th out of 15 NL teams, ahead of only the San Francisco Giants.

Rowdy Tellez hit 35 homers for the Brewers in 2022 but managed just 13 last year and got non-tendered before signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Carlos Santana, who got much of the playing time at first base for Milwaukee after getting acquired at the trade deadline, remains a free agent.

The Brewers also added Jake Bauers, who batted .202 with a .279 on-base percentage, 12 homers and 30 RBIs for the New York Yankees last season. But Hoskins figures to be the Brewers’ main first baseman as they hope he maintains the production he provided the Phillies.

The Boston Red Sox said Monday that former manager Jimy Williams has died at the age of 80..

The team said Williams died Friday at AdventHealth North Pinellas Hospital in Tarpon Springs, Florida, after a brief illness. Williams lived in nearby Palm Harbor.

In addition to the Sox, Williams also managed the Toronto Blue Jays and the Houston Astros. He won 86 games or more in each of his three full seasons in Toronto.

Williams led the Sox to a 414-352 record in five seasons.

“Following a 78-84 (.481) record in his first season as Boston’s manager in 1997, he led the Red Sox to back-to-back Postseason berths in 1998 and 1999. Williams finished second in American League Manager of the Year voting in 1998 before winning the award in 1999, when his club went 95-68 (.580) and won the American League Division Series over Cleveland,” the Red Sox said.

Defensive end Charles Omenihu tore an ACL in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game and won’t be available to play in Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers  his former team, according to multiple reports.

Omenihu appeared to confirm the news via his X account, posting anemoji of a broken heart.

Omenihu had a career-high seven sacks this season, his first with the Chiefs, despite missing the first six games with an NFL suspension. He had a strip sack of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson on Sunday before leaving with the injury.

Congratulations to Joe Ascher for breaking the boys basketball scoring record. He passed Gabe Ascher who previously held the record, with 1,516 points.

Congratulations also to Montana Groskreutz, who scored her 1,000 point last week in girls basketball. She is the fourth girl to do so in school history and the second one this season.

In girls basketball Laconia survived Flyway Conference rival Winnebago Lutheran 66-63 Monday night.
