SUPSECT IN FATAL FDL COUNTY HIT AND RUN ARRESTED

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials arrested a 19-year-old West Bend man suspected of hit-and-run causing death following another crash on Highway 45 in the Town of Auburn early Sunday morning. Five people were in a vehicle that went into the ditch and hit a culvert causing the vehicle to roll several times. Four people were ejected from the vehicle including the driver a 19-year-old Hartford woman. She was subsequently hit by a vehicle driven by the West Bend man and dragged three miles from the original crash site. She was pronounced dead. Four others involved in the initial rollover suffered injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to life-threatening. Investigators believe the people in the two vehicles knew each other and were traveling together. The West Bend man was arrested later that morning and is being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail pending an initial court appearance. More details are expected to be released when the District Attorney files a criminal complaint.

RAFD REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

The president of the Ripon Area Fire District Governing Board says the Report Card to the Community they released before the Christmas holidays is their way of informing residents about the strides they are making in improving the department. Ellen Sorensen says it shows how they moved forward, but also provides a record of what they still need to accomplish. For example they learned they needed FIT testing for the facemasks firefighters use during fires. If the mask doesn’t fit well noxious fumes from burning materials could cause harm to a firefighter. The FIT testing was completed. They also updated their CO2 extinguishers and made sure their trucks and equipment were up to Department of Transportation standards. Building maintenance issues including improving doors and putting in a camera surveillance system on the exterior of the building were also completed. Other topics covered in the report include Inspections, Training, social media, Personnel Management, Finances and more.

NATIONAL DEBT UNSUSTAINABLE

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson says we can’t afford to add to the National Debt. The federal lawmaker from Oshkosh says the Federal Government went on a spending spree after the pandemic. He says the total federal budget spending went from $4.4 trillion to a baseline of $6.4 trillion, $2 trillion higher. He says on paper it looks like $1.7 trillion was added to the National Debt in 2022 but that is only because $300 billion was added back from student loan forgiveness because it was ruled unconstitutional. Johnson points out a $34 trillion National Debt is unsustainable. He says he is trying to warn people about it, but he is not making much traction. The 2024 Federal Budget has yet to be approved, the federal government is operating through a continuing resolution right now.

VETERANS PARK IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

Fond du Lac County Executive Sam Kaufman says Veterans Park in Fond du Lac will be getting a facelift. He says he’s spoken to a number of veterans’ groups about it because the park has fallen into disrepair over the years and the staging area isn’t safe for those veterans with disabilities. Kaufman wants to set aside $100,000 from the recent sale of parkland north of Rosendale to get things started but he is certain with all the support from veterans’ groups and private corporations they will have enough money for the effort. Veterans’ groups and Twohig landscaping have put together a plan for improvements. He says the committee that was formed came up with a beautiful plan. He says among the planned improvements are a ramp area and staircase up to the staging area and donated stones honoring veterans that can also serve as a fundraising mechanism for the project. Sidewalks in the park and pillars will represent each branch of the military. He’s hoping that the improvements can be completed by Veterans Day.

Kits may also be available at your local city or town clerk’s office. Short term radon test kits are available year-round for $10.
