The Packers cleaned out their lockers Monday following Saturday night’s loss to the 49ers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.
The Packers (10-9) were the youngest team to win a playoff game since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, according to the Elias Sports Bureau’s “weighted age” metric, which factors in how many games in which a player appeared. And now hopes and the anticipation is beginning to build up for next year.
They bounced back from a 1-5 start to sneak into the playoffs with the NFC’s No. 7 seed. They beat the second-seeded Dallas Cowboys 48-32 and led the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers most of the way before falling 24-21.
The Packers believe they’re ready to contend for years now that quarterback Jordan Love has shown he’s a worthy successor to four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers, who got traded to the New York Jets last April.
But they must prove they can handle heightened expectations.
Green Bay’s playoff upset of the Cowboys capped a nine-game stretch in which Love threw 21 touchdown passes with only one interception, but the 49ers game showed he still has plenty to learn.
Love threw two second-half interceptions and acknowledged Saturday night that he committed a “mortal sin” on the final one by throwing into coverage across the middle of the field.
LaFleur said Monday that “I think he’ll be better for it in the long run.”
Giannis Antetokounmpo had a triple-double and Khris Middleton added 26 points as the Milwaukee Bucks pulled away late and beat the Detroit Pistons 122-113 on Monday night.
Antetokounmpo finished with 31 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists as the Bucks won for the fifth time in six games. Brook Lopez finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
“Giannis just took over the game in the last five minutes,” Bucks coach Adrian Griffin said. “He’s a phenomenal player, but he’s also a winning player who makes winning plays when we need them. He got to the line, he found open teammates, he got on the offensive glass and he was getting stops and blocks at the other end.”
Middleton now has 12,012 points for the Bucks, moving past Glenn Robinson Sr. for third place in franchise history.
“That’s pretty cool — I’m happy,” he said. “I still have a lot I think I can do for this franchise and for our city.”
Griffin paid tribute to Middleton’s determination.
“It’s remarkable when you think about him being the 38th pick in the draft. It is a testament to what being a pro is all about,” Griffin said. “It takes a lot to come from where he started — he was drafted right here by the Pistons — to where he is now, an NBA champion.”
Marcus Sasser led the Pistons with 23 points, and fellow reserve Isaiah Stewart had 19 points and eight rebounds. Jaden Ivey led the starters with 17 points as Detroit lost to Milwaukee for the second time in three nights.
Lopez’s 3-pointer put Milwaukee up 110-109 with 4:59 left, and Antetokounmpo extended the lead to three points from the free-throw line before Malik Beasley’s 3-pointer made it 117-111 with 3:30 to go.
Detroit struggled offensively and a 3-pointer by Middleton made it a 15-2 run and an 11-point Milwaukee lead.
Milwaukee hit 3 of 17 3-point attempts in the first half and still led 58-56 behind 13 points from Antetokounmpo.
The Bucks host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Wisconsin Herd, NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, lost to the Birmingham Squadron 125-107.
Wenyen Gabriel powered the Herd with 23 points while Stevie Thompson Jr. added a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Milwaukee Bucks assignment player Chris Livingston posted 16 points.
The Birmingham Squadron‘s top scorer was Landers Nolley II with 25 points followed by Malcolm Hill with 22 points.
The Herd will take on the Birmingham Squadron again at home on Wednesday, January 24 with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CST.
Joel Embidd said it was “great” to be put in the same conversation as Wilt Chamberlain after he became the ninth player in NBA history to score 70 points in a game and broke Chamberlain’s 76ers franchise record of 68 points in the process.
“Obviously, Wilt accomplished … everything [in] the history of this league, and basketball in general,” Embiid said after his 70 points helped the Sixers beat the San Antonio Spurs 133-123 on Monday night. “So to be in the same conversation, that’s pretty cool.”
Embiid finished with 70 points, 18 rebounds and 5 assists, a line that has never happened in NBA history before Monday’s game, according to ESPN’s Stats & Information.
In men’s college basketball tonight #13 Wisconsin is at Minnesota. The Badgers (14-4, 6-1) dropped two spots in the weekly AP ratings. The Badgers have beat the Gophers (12-6, 3-4) six straight games. Tipoff is at 6:00.
The AP Top 25 had another week of upheaval, with teams bouncing around like kernels in a popcorn maker.
The same two teams remained at the top amid the poll turmoil.
Reigning national champion Connecticut stayed No. 1 in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll released Monday, receiving 44 first-place votes from a 61-person media panel. No. 2 Purdue got 17 first-place votes.
A loss by Kansas jumbled the rest of the top five.
No. 3 North Carolina, No. 4 Houston and No. 5 Tennessee all moved up a spot by sweeping two games each last week.
The Jayhawks dropped four spots to No. 7 following a 91-85 loss to West Virginia that ended their six-game winning streak in the series.
UConn moved to the top of the poll last week for the first time in 15 years.
Wisconsin slipped to spots to 13th while Marquette is ranked 14th
In the women’s top 25 AP poll South Carolina remained the unanimous choice at No. 1 in the poll, receiving all 35 votes from a national media panel. The Gamecocks cruised to easy wins over Kentucky and Texas A&M. Coach Dawn Staley’s team has a showdown at No. 9 LSU on Thursday night.
There was some shifting in the top 10 this week, with UCLA moving back up to No. 2 after beating Colorado on the road. The Bruins play at No. 16 Utah on Monday night.
The Buffaloes remained in the third spot, thanks to a win over then-No. 6 USC, which fell to 11th after also losing to Utah.
Iowa dropped to fifth after falling in overtime to Ohio State. Hawkeyes star guard Caitlin Clark had a scary moment after the game when she accidently was run into by a fan who was storming the court to celebrate. Clark said she was OK.
The Buckeyes jumped six spots to No. 12. No. 6 Stanford, North Carolina State and UConn followed the Hawkeyes.
