OSHKOSH MAN BOUND OVER FOR TRIAL IN HIT AND RUN DEATH

A 59-year-old Oshkosh man suspected of striking and killing a pedestrian during a pizza delivery has been bound over for trial. Mark Radley who is charged with hit-and-run involving death waived his preliminary hearing in Winnebago County court last Thursday. He will be arraigned on February 5th. According to the criminal complaint Oshkosh Police were called to Ohio Street and West Third Avenue the evening of January 10th. A 38-year-old man had been struck by a vehicle and was bleeding extensively. He died a short time later. Police were able to determine the license plate of the vehicle involved. They traced it to Radley. The van he was driving had damage to the front end. He was making a pizza delivery at the time of the accident. Police were able to get video from the restaurant he works for to confirm when he left the store and returned. He allegedly told police he left the scene because he didn’t know what he hit.

WAUPACA COUNTY DEPUTY SCAM

The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office says a scammer is trying to take advantage of residents by posing as a deputy or detective with their office. The type of scam can be very convincing because the scammer uses deputies’ real names and spoofs the phone numbers from the Sheriff’s Office. One particular number that has been associated with the phone scams is 715-229-6195. The Sheriff’s Office recommends never giving personal identifying information out such as your date of birth, social security number, or financial information over the telephone unless you have verified who you are actually speaking with. They say they will never advise you of an arrest warrant or request bond money by telephone. If you have any questions you can call their office directly at 715-258-4466 to validate any phone call you received.

FDL COUNTY EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION PLAN APPROVED

By a unanimous vote the Fond du Lac County Board last week approved the implementation of the employee compensation recommended by the preparers of an analysis, Bolton Partners. Among the recommendations is a 3 percent increase in wages and an increase in step on the wage scale on an employee’s work anniversary. The implementation takes effect on March 3rd. The analysis compared what the county was paying its employees to what similar-sized counties were offering their employees. County Executive Sam Kaufman says they have some unique positions that they simply have nothing they can compare to. He says they will address those positions in a future implementation. Finance Committee Chairperson Marty Ryan says the committee for years has struggled with employee compensation and benefits knowing they were lagging behind other counties. It will cost the county $2.5 million for the implementation. Of that $1.9 million will come out of contingency fund and the remainder from revenues from fees county departments charge and grants.

REPRESENTATIVE DALLMAN VOTES FOR PARENTS BILL OF RIGHTS

State Representative Alex Dallman of Green Lake last week voted in favor of bill known as the “Parent Bill of Rights.” Dallman says, “I believe and trust wholeheartedly that parents know what is best for their children, not the government.” The bill establishes sixteen rights that are reserved explicitly to the parent of a child. The rights include the right of the parent to determine the religion of their child, the right to review instructional materials used by the child’s school, as well as the right to be notified of health services offered at a child’s school and to withhold consent or decline any specific service. The bill passed along party lines with 62 Republicans voting yes and 35 Democrats voting no.

THEDACARE MODERNIZATION PROJECT COMPLETED

ThedaCare has completed its $100 million investment to modernize ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah. The project was announced in October 2021 and construction began in January of 2022. Improvements included expanding the Emergency Department, enhancing specialized space to care for stroke patients, updating operating rooms, updating the family birth center, introducing the Obstetrical Emergency Department and Hospitalist Program, forming a new Graduate Medical Education program, creating a new environment for the Women’s Center, designing a new dining area on the main floor and more. Enhancements were funded in part through donors who support the ThedaCare Foundation-Neenah. The Foundation worked with generous donors within the community to raise more than $15 million of philanthropic support. In addition, the Foundation released $25 million from existing assets to provide a total of $40 million in support for the modernization project.

SENATOR JOHNSON VOTES AGAINST LATEST CONTINUING RESOLUTION

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson voted for two previous continuing resolutions to avoid a government shutdown, but didn’t support the one approved last week that continues funding the government until March 1st. He believes they will be right back in another 30 days being asked to approve another continuing resolution. He says Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer hasn’t brought any appropriation bills to the Senate and that the New York Democrat wants a big omnibus spending bill loaded up with pork barrel spending, which Johnson says he will not support. Johnson had co-sponsored the Preventing Government Shutdown Act which would have been similar to what Wisconsin does continuing to fund government at the same level as the previous year until a new budget is passed. The federal lawmaker from Oshkosh says it did get some bipartisan support but not enough because of some of the discipline included in it keeping government spending in check until a new federal budget is approved.
