The Packers return to the practice field today as they get ready for the playoff divisional showdown Saturday night at San Francisco against the 49ers.
The 7th seeded Packers upset the Cowboys on the road last Sunday night 48-32 and now face #1 San Francisco.
Kanye Clary scored 27 points, Ace Baldwin Jr. added 20 and Penn State beat No. 11 Wisconsin 87-83 on Tuesday night for its first win over an AP Top 25 team under coach Mike Rhoades.
The Nittany Lions (9-9, 3-4 Big Ten) had to fight back from double-digit deficits in their previous two conference wins this season. This time, they barely trailed as they knocked off the Big Ten’s last unbeaten team in league play.
AJ Storr scored 23 points and Steven Crowl added 17 for the Badgers (13-4, 5-1), who had their six-game winning streak snapped after a sloppy start.
Led by Baldwin, who drained a 3-pointer on his first shot, Penn State jumped out to a 12-2 lead to the delight of a loud crowd made up of mostly Penn State students. They had a reprieve from classes after a snowstorm hit Happy Valley early in the day.
The fans got louder as the game progressed and Penn State held its advantage for all but 3:24.
After cutting the deficit to 39-35 at halftime, the Badgers didn’t take their first lead until there was 5:01 left. Max Klesmit then hit a 3-pointer that made it 70-68.
Their lead wouldn’t last. The Nittany Lions kept Storr and Wahl in check down the stretch during a 17-10 run that saw Nick Kern and Baldwin combine to go 9 for 9 at the free throw line.
Penn State capitalized on a handful of Wisconsin turnovers in the opening five minutes, then leaned on Clary and Kern as the half wore on.
Wisconsin hosts Indiana on Friday.
In the NBA tonight the Bucks are at Cleveland to take on the Cavaliers. Milwaukee is 28-12 and remains in the second place in the Eastern Conference, three games behind the Boston Celtics. The Cavs are 23-15 and are fourth in the East, four games behind Boston.
The Falcons announced Tuesday they had completed an interview with Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, a day after sitting down with former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
Harbaugh and Belichick are the most accomplished NFL coaches on the circuit — and Harbaugh has won everywhere he has coached.
Harbaugh, 60, has been at Michigan since 2015, winning the national championship earlier this month and three straight Big Ten titles. He is 86-25 in games he has coached with the Wolverines — he was suspended twice this past season during Michigan’s run to the national title — and his team has won at least 12 games in each of the past three campaigns.
Prior to Michigan, he coached the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014, going 44-19-1 with two NFC West titles, three playoff appearances, three trips to the NFC Championship Game and one Super Bowl berth — which resulted in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens, coached by his brother, John Harbaugh, in Super Bowl XLVII.
Jim Harbaugh never finished a season under .500 during his NFL tenure.
Harbaugh spent four years at Stanford, reviving a beleaguered program and eventually finishing with a 29-21 record — including a 12-1 season and a No. 4 final ranking with the Cardinal in 2010. While there, he helped develop future No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck in 2009 and 2010. Harbaugh also went 29-6 at San Diego, winning back-to-back Pioneer League titles.
Harbaugh is the seventh coach to interview with the Falcons to replace Arthur Smith, who was fired Jan. 8 after three seasons on the job. Harbaugh joins Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald and assistant head coach Anthony Weaver, Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, Carolina Panthers D-coordinator Ejiro Evero, Niners D-coordinator Steve Wilks and Belichick as candidates for the role.
This is Harbaugh’s second known interview. He also spoke with the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday.
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told players on Tuesday the speculation about him stepping away is unfounded and he plans on coaching the team in 2024, NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reported.
The message to players comes less than 24 hours after head coach Mike Tomlin abruptly exited his postgame news conference before a question regarding his future could be finished.
Tomlin, who is entering the final season on his current contract, is expected to address the media later this week, Garafolo added.
Tomlin remains just the third head coach of the Steelers franchise in the Super Bowl era, following Hall of Famers Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher. He’s produced a 173-100-2 record, 11 playoff appearances, two Super Bowl berths and one Lombardi Trophy. In addition, Tomlin just extended his NFL record for consecutive non-losing season to 17 to begin a career.
Iowa guard Catlin Clark moved into fourth place on the NCAA women’s basketball career scoring list Tuesday, passing former Baylor standout center Britney Griner as the No. 2 Hawkeyes won their 15th game in a row. Clark now has 3,306 points.
Clark scored a game-high 32 as Iowa defeated visiting Wisconsin 96-50. The Hawkeyes were without starting forward Hanah Stelke (lower leg injury) but still beat the Badgers for the 29th consecutive time. Iowa, 18-1 overall, leads the Big Ten at 7-0.
Clark also led the Hawkeyes with seven rebounds and five assists. For the third consecutive game, she made six of the Hawkeyes’ 15 3-pointers.
Clark came into the game with 3,274 points, needing 10 to move past Griner. She got that on a free throw with 7:02 left in the second quarter. The senior has scored in double figures in every game at Iowa except one, in her freshman year.
Next on the scoring list is former Missouri State guard Jackie Stiles, who scored 3,393 points from 1997 to 2001. Clark needs 88 to pass her.
In second is guard Kelsey Mitchell (3,402 from 2014 to 2018 at Ohio State), and first is guard Kelsey Plum (3,527 from 2013 to 2017 at Washington). Plum (Las Vegas Aces) and Mitchell (Indiana Fever) are current WNBA standouts, as is Griner (Phoenix Mercury).
Clark is now averaging 31.0 points per game. At her current pace, she could move into first place in the second or third week of February.
She has made at least one 3-pointer in 76 consecutive games and at least two 3s in 45 consecutive games. The latter streak is the longest in Division I over the past 25 seasons.
Wisconsin is the 26th different opponent against which Clark has scored at least 30 points. That includes every Big Ten program except Purdue, against which Clark had her 15th career triple-double last week.
Iowa next travels to No. 18 Ohio State on Sunday for what’s anticipated to be one of the Hawkeyes’ tougher road games.
Former Green Bay Packers coach Mike Holmgren is among four Wisconsin sports legends who will be inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame this spring.
Along with the Super Bowl XXXI Champion coach, Milwaukee Brewers All-Star and Silver Slugger Award Winner, Prince Fielder, and 2021 Ryder Cup Captain and Champion Steve Stricker, as well as NASCAR Hall of Fame member Matt Kenseth will be inducted.
Holgrem was head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 1992 to 1998. He led the Packers to two straight Super Bowls, Super Bowl XXXI and Super Bowl XXXII, leading the team to their 12th league championship in Super Bowl XXXI. The Packers were consistent winners under his tenure, never recording a losing season.
Drafted in the first round by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2002, Fielder spent the first seven years of his career in Milwaukee. He holds the Brewers’ team record for home runs and runs batted in in a season. He became the first Brewer to win the Home Run Derby in 2009, he also won the Derby in 2012. Fielder ended his career as a six-time All-Star recording 319 total home runs.
Born in Cambridge, Wisconsin, Kenseth is a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame and named to NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers list. After winning out on short tracks in Wisconsin, Kenseth moved up to the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in 2000. That year, he won the series’ Rookie of the Year honors. He won the final Winston Cup Championship in 2003. Following his Winston Cup win, The International Race of Champions invited Kenseth to race in their 2004 season, where he won the season championship. He won the Daytona 500 in both 2009 and 2012.
Born in Edgerton, Wisconsin, Stricker was the U.S. 2021 Ryder Cup captain, winning at the historic Whistling Straights. In 1994 he joined the PGA Tour, marking two early victories in 1996 and finishing fourth on the PGA Tour money list. He has amassed 12 total PGA Tour wins. In 2006 he was voted the tour’s Comeback Player of the Year. In 2007 he was named Comeback Player of the Year once again after finishing runner up to Tiger Woods at the FedEx Cup Playoffs. After continued success in 2023 with multiple victories in the PGA Champions Tour, Stricker was given the Byron Nelson Award.
The Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame’s website says the 74th Anniversary Induction Ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 20, at the Marcus Performing Arts Center in downtown Milwaukee.
The Induction will be hosted by Green Bay Packers Super Bowl Champion, All-Time Leading Receiver, Dancing with the Stars Champion, AMVETS Humanitarian of the Year, and New York Times best-selling author and President of the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame Board of Directors, Donald Driver.
Jason Kelce, perhaps the NFL’s best center, is calling it a career.
Following the Philadelphia Eagles’ season-ending playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night, Kelce informed teammates that he’s retiring following his 13th season, NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reported.
ESPN reported the news first.
Kelce, the older brother of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, is a seven-time Pro Bowler, six-time All-Pro and one-time Super Bowl champion.
The 36-year-old Kelce, likely bound for the Hall of Fame one day, has weighed his playing future over the past few seasons.
Following a Super Bowl loss last season to his brother’s Chiefs, he was undecided in the immediate aftermath. A year prior, Kelce announced he was returning after Sirianni sent him a couple of kegs of beer to entice him to return.
This time around, Kelce is moving on.
He played in 193 career regular-season games and 12 in the postseason, including starting for the Eagles in Super Bowl LII, which saw Philadelphia defeat New England, 41-33, for the franchise’s only Super Bowl triumph.
