After a few days off the Packers are back at it today getting ready for the Monday Night Football road game against the Giants. Green Bay, now 6-6 and tied with the Vikings for second place in the NFC North, has won three straight. The latest was a Sunday night win at home over the Chiefs.
The Packers have some injury issues with running back Aaron Jones and wide receiver Christian Watson. Jones has been dealing with an MCL sprain that he suffered in Week 11 against the Los Angeles Chargers while Watson is back on the injury report after injuring his hamstring in the fourth quarter of the Chiefs game.
The Packers’ all-time leading scorer, kicker Mason Crosby, is playing for another team.
ESPN and the NFL Network report the L.A. Rams signed Crosby to the practice squad and intends to get him on the active roster soon.
Crosby, 39, became a free agent after the 2022 season, at the end of a 3-year, $12 million contract, and sold his Green Bay home in May. He worked out for Los Angeles before the Rams played the Packers at Lambeau Field in November but didn’t get a deal in place to have Crosby facing his former team.
Crosby was selected in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft and was part of the Packers’ Super Bowl 45 championship team.
In Thursday Night Football, week 14 begins as the Steelers host the Patriots. Pittsburgh is 7-5 and tied with Cleveland for second place in the AFC North while New England comes in with a 2-10 record in the AFC East.
Acute appendicitis has landed Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy in the hospital.
Dallas announced McCarthy experienced abdominal pain Wednesday morning that warranted further evaluation and resulted in his diagnosis, leading to surgery Wednesday afternoon, according to the team. NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported Wednesday afternoon that McCarthy was out of surgery and his procedure “went fine.”
McCarthy is expected to be released from the hospital, and anticipates coaching Sunday night against the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles, per the team.
The Bucks play the Pacers later today in a semi-final NBA In-season Tournament Game in Las Vegas.
Milwaukee will be going up against Indians and former Oshkosh North start Tyrese Haliburton. Tipoff is at 4:00 CT.
Tyler Kolek had 28 points, eight rebounds and six assists as No. 8 Marquette drubbed No. 12 Texas 86-65 on Wednesday night in a Big East-Big 12 Battle matchup.
Kam Jones added 17 points for Marquette (7-2), which rebounded from a 75-64 loss Saturday at in-state rival Wisconsin and gave coach Shaka Smart an emphatic win against his former team. Smart faced the Longhorns for the first time since spending six seasons at Texas, where he went 109-86 from 2015-21 but did not win an NCAA Tournament game. Marquette played with a different mindset against the Longhorns, Kolek said.
Max Abmas led Texas (6-2) with 25 points.
The teams met for only the second time, with Marquette winning the lone meeting 65-56 on Dec. 27, 1977.
Ray’Sean Taylor’s 23 points helped SIU-Edwardsville defeat Green Bay 78-69 on Wednesday night.
Taylor shot 6 for 12 (3 for 7 from 3-point range) and 8 of 9 from the free throw line for the Cougars (6-4). Damarco Minor added 18 points while shooting 4 for 11 (2 for 5 from 3-point range) and 8 of 9 from the free throw line. Lamar Wright shot 5 of 8 from the field and 5 for 7 from the line to finish with 15 points.
The Phoenix (4-5) were led by Noah Reynolds, who recorded 20 points. Green Bay also got 11 points Elijah Jones. Foster Wonders also had 11 points.
Green Bay hosts Western Illinois on Saturday.
The Houston Astros and catcher Victor Caratini agreed Tuesday to a $12 million, two-year contract, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement was subject to a successful physical and had not been announced. Caratini can earn additional performance bonuses.
The 30-year-old Caratini spent the last two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers and hit .259 with seven homers and 25 RBIs in 62 games this year as a backup to William Contreras.
Caratini is a .236 career hitter with 38 homers and 171 RBIs in seven major league seasons with the Chicago Cubs (2017-20), San Diego (2021) and Milwaukee (2022-23).
Yainer Díaz is expected to the Astros’ starting catcher next year, and the agreement with Caratini could mean Houston won’t re-sign Martín Maldonado. The 37-year-old, also a former Brewer, has been with the Astros since 2019.
