Steven Crowl scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Wisconsin cruised to a 71-49 victory over Western Illinois on Monday night.
AJ Storr and Chucky Hepburn also scored 13 points apiece and Tyler Wahl added 12 for Wisconsin (5-2), which won its fourth straight game. The Badgers entered having won the Fort Myers Tip-Off Beach Division, beating then-No. 24 Virginia in the opener and SMU in the title game on Nov. 22.
The Badgers shot 53% (25 of 47) from the floor and 81% (13 of 16) from the free-throw line against Western Illinois (2-5).
James Dent Jr. scored 17 points on 4-of-12 shooting and made two of the Leathernecks’ four 3-pointers. Drew Cisse had 11 rebounds to go with eight points.
Wisconsin opened on a 19-9 run and led 35-19 at the break. Storr led with 11 points and Wahl chipped in seven. The Leathernecks pulled to 42-34 with 13 minutes to play but didn’t get closer.
The Badgers face third-ranked Marquette at home on Saturday.
The Packers are off today. They received some help from the Bears Monday night as they knocked off the Vikings 12-10 in Minneapolis. Carlos Santos kicked his fourth field goal of the game with 10 seconds to go to give Chicago (4-8) the victory. The Vikings dropped to 6-6 in the NFC North.
The Bears picked off Vikings quarterback Josh Doubs four times and Justin Fields led Chicago on their game-winning drive. Fields was 21-37 for 217 yards and led the team in rushing with 59 yards on 12 carries. Wide receiver D.J. Moore caught 11 passes for 114 yards.
Doubs was 22 of 32 for 185 yards and a touchdown to go with his four picks. T.J. Hockenson led the Vikings receivers with six catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. Minnesota managed just 73 yards on the ground.
The loss means the Packers, if they beat the Chiefs Sunday night at Lambeau Field, can move into a tie for first place with the Vikings in the division.
Purdue is back atop The Associated Press Top 25 men’s college basketball poll, right where it spent so much of last season.
Purdue replaced preseason No. 1 Kansas, which fell to fifth after Marquette in the Maui semifinals and then rebounding to beat Tennessee in the third-place game. Arizona moved up one spot to No. 2 with one first-place vote and Marquette climbed a spot to third. The Golden Eagles face in-state rival Wisconsin on Saturday.
UConn was fourth with two first-place votes. The defending national champion Huskies play the Jayhawks on Friday night at Allen Fieldhouse.
Houston remained sixth while Duke climbed to seventh, Miami to eighth and Baylor to ninth. Tennessee only fell three places to 10th after its losses to Purdue and Kansas in Maui, a reflection of the stiff competition.
Gonzaga remained at No. 11 after its trip to Maui, and Kentucky was 12th. Florida Atlantic used its win over then-No. 12 Texas A&M on the way to an ESPN Events Invitational title to jump six spots to No. 13, right ahead of the Aggies. Creighton plummeted seven spots to No. 15 after getting walloped by Colorado State in the Hall of Fame Classic championship game.
Texas and North Carolina were followed by Villanova, which returned to the poll, and then BYU and the Rams, who both jumped into the poll for the first time this season. Mississippi State, James Madison, Alabama, Illinois and Oklahoma rounded out the Top 25.
The Bucks are back in action tonight at Miami to play the Heat in an In-Season Tournament game. Milwaukee is coming off a win over the Trail Blazers on Sunday, coming back from a 26 point deficit. It represented the Bucks largest-come-behind victory since November 26th, 2012, when they came back from 27 points down in a 93-92 victory over Chicago.
Giannis Antetokunmpoko led the way over against Portland, scoring 33 points while grabbing 16 rebounds and handing out six assists. Damian Lillard added 31 points against his former team.
Milwaukee is 12-5 in the Eastern Conference, tied with Orlando, and one game behind the 13-4 Boston Celtics.
The Carolina Panthers fired head coach Frank Reich Monday morning.
Reich’s Panthers have the worst record in the NFL with a 1-10 season after Carolina lost on the road to the Tennessee Titans 17-10 Sunday. Although this was Reich’s first year as head coach, it will be the Panthers’ sixth straight losing season.
Team owner David Tepper announced the firing in a statement: “I met with Coach Reich this morning and informed him that he will not continue as head coach of the Carolina Panthers. I want to thank Frank for his dedication and service, and we wish him well.”
Tepper said special teams coordinator Chris Tabor was promoted to interim head coach. Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will take over play-calling duties, with senior assistant Jim Caldwell as his special advisor.
The Panthers rank 30th in the league in total offense and 30th in passing yards per game. The Panthers say Reich was “hired with a mandate” to develop former Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall draft pack Bryce Young into a winning quarterback.
The Panthers are scheduled to host the Green Bay Packers on Dec. 24.
Former Green Bay Packers linebacker Jim Carter has died. The team’s official website says the 75-year-old died of cancer on Thanksgiving Day.
The team’s third-round draft choice in 1970, Carter played for the Packers until 1978. He had the unenviable task of replacing legendary middle linebacker Ray Nitschke. The Packers’ website says Carter was frequently booed by home fans for that reason.
Decades after he retired, Carter earned cheers at Lambeau Field. He served as honorary captain for the final game of the 2022 season and attended the Packers’ alumni weekend in September.
