SCHOOL BUS HIT IN ROSENDALE NO ONE HURT

No one was hurt when a vehicle struck a school bus near Laconia High School in Rosendale Wednesday morning. According to Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Sergeant Logan Will the accident happened just before 8 am. Students had just been dropped off and the bus was stopped on South Grant Street at West Division Street when an eastbound vehicle making a right turn hit the driver’s side corner of the bus. The vehicle driver’s vision was obstructed by frost and ice on the windshield. No citations were issued.  Rosendale Brandon Schools Superintendent Wayne Weber says the School District sent out an email to parents yesterday informing them about the accident and telling them no students were on the bus at the time of the accident.

FRANTIC RESCUE IN WASHINGTON COUNTY

There were some frantic moments in Washington County during a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Pioneer Road and Mayfield Road Wednesday morning. A 34-year-old Hartford woman called 9-1-1 at 7:11 am saying her vehicle’s airbags had deployed and she couldn’t open her car doors or windows. Her children, ages 5, 7 and 14 were in the vehicle with her. As a Sheriff’s deputy arrived the engine compartment of her car started on fire. The deputy tried to put out the fire with his squad’s extinguisher, but the fire continued to spread. The deputy used a window breaking tool to break two windows and the deputy, and the other driver were able to help the children and their mother out of the vehicle. The fire continued to spread until Village of Richfield firefighters put it out. The investigation revealed a 50-year-old Hartford man was heading west on Pioneer Road in heavy traffic when he made a U-Turn. The Hartford woman was heading east on Pioneer Road and was unable to stop in time to avoid his vehicle. The children were not harmed, but their mother suffered minor scratches while being extricated from her vehicle. (Washington County Sheriff’s photo).

SUN PRARIE MAN MAKES INITIAL COURT APPEARANCE ON NEGLIGENT HOMICIDE CHARGE

The 36-year-old Sun Prairie man suspected of causing a crash that killed a horse and buggy operator made his initial appearance in Dodge County court Monday. Eric Schmoldt is charged with homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the crash scene on Highway 16/60 near County Highway J in the town of Lowell on September 10th of 2021. According to the criminal complaint they found a mangled horse drawn buggy and a damaged SUV. Schmoldt, said he had lowered his visor because of the sunlight. He said he couldn’t see a lot and thought he had hit a speed limit sign. Schmoldt allegedly sent a text message just moments after the crash saying, “just got into another car accident…this time it was my fault.’ The SUV had struck the horse and buggy while trying to pass it. Schmoldt was released on a $5,000 signature bond and will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on December 7th.

AIR AMERICAN ACT REINTRODUCED

Congressman Glenn Grothman has introduced the bipartisan Air America Act, which will correct an inequity suffered by the brave Americans who are former employees of Air America by ensuring they receive the federal retirement benefits and recognition they have earned. The legislation was inspired by Neil Hansen, a resident of the 6th Congressional District, who was a pilot for Air America during the Vietnam War. The bill has 35 bipartisan cosponsors and Senator Marco Rubio has introduced a companion version of the bill in the U.S. Senate. Between 1950 and 1976, a group of approximately 1,000 U.S. citizens worked for Air America which was portrayed as a private company carrying out flight operations during the Cold War. However, now-declassified documents have revealed that Air America was wholly owned and controlled by the U.S. government, meaning Air American workers were actually federal employees under the law at the time they worked. Grothman and Rubio had introduced similar legislation three years ago.

SAFE DISPOSAL OF VAPE PENS A REAL ISSUE

An official with the East Central Alliance for Nicotine Prevention says the disposal of vape pens, their batteries and chemicals is a real concern. Laura Nakielski says most of the vapes are designed for one-time use and then they are tossed away. However, they contain lithium batteries which can start fires and the chemicals used in the so-called E Juice are hazardous. She says they can’t be stored until the user can find a way to safely dispose of them. She says what is downright scary is they learned that most teenage vapers are flushing their vape pens down school toilets where they make their way into wastewater. Nakielski says the Alliance was able to safely dispose of 92 vape pens through a hazardous chemical clean sweep program, but those types of programs are infrequent. The East Central Alliance for Nicotine Prevention serves Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Marquette, and Waushara Counties.
