Devin Carter scored 21 points, Bryce Hopkins added 16 points and Providence beat Wisconsin 72-59 on Tuesday night in the Gavitt Tipoff Games. The Friars moved to 5-1 all-time against the Badgers, including a 58-57 victory on Dec. 11, 1995 in the last game of the series played in Providence.
Providence made five 3-pointers during a 17-2 run to build an early 27-9 lead. Wisconsin went 4 of 21 from the field in the opening 11 minutes, with a scoring drought of four minutes, 25 seconds. The Friars led 37-21 at halftime after holding the Badgers to 27% shooting.
Providence scored eight of the opening 10 points of the second half for a 45-23 lead. Wisconsin didn’t make its first field goal of the second half until the 16:11 mark.
Jayden Pierre and Josh Oduro each scored 13 points for Providence (3-0). Pierre, coming off a career-high 16 points on Saturday, scored 11 points in the opening 12 minutes and Carter added 12 first-half points.
AJ Storr scored 22 points for Wisconsin (1-2), which was coming off an 80-70 loss to No. 9 Tennessee on Friday. John Blackwell scored 11 points.
Providence travels to Nassau, Bahamas to play Kansas State on Friday in the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship. Wisconsin hosts Robert Morris on Friday.
Tyler Kolek shook off an ankle injury to score 24 points and No. 4 Marquette beat No. 23 Illinois 71-64 on Tuesday night. The reigning Big East player of the year, Kolek added six rebounds and four assists. Kam Jones scored 15 for the Golden Eagles (3-0), and Oso Ighodaro had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Kolek turned his ankle in Friday night’s 95-65 win over Rider and left the court with just under eight minutes left. He did not return.
Terrence Shannon Jr. had 21 points for Illinois (2-1). It was his 13th consecutive game in double figures, a streak that dates to Jan. 31.
Marcus Domask added 18 points and Luke Goode had 13. Quincy Guerrier didn’t score, but grabbed 10 rebounds for the Fighting Illini.
A 3-pointer by Sean Jones put Marquette ahead 57-52 with 8:27 left. Illinois climbed within four twice after that, but couldn’t get any closer.
Marquette led 36-31 at halftime behind Kolek’s 14 points. He shot 7 of 11 from the field in the first 20 minutes.
The Illini stayed close in the first half by making a six 3s, including three by Goode.
Marquette started slowly, missing its first four shots — including two layups — and two free throws.
The matchup was part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games, an annual early-season series between Big East and Big Ten teams.

The Wisconsin state Senate narrowly approved a plan Tuesday to spend nearly half a billion dollars to help the Milwaukee Brewers repair their stadium over the next three decades, brushing aside arguments that the team has more than enough money and doesn’t deserve such a sizable government subsidy.
The chamber approved the legislation on a 19-14 vote, sending it to the Assembly for a floor vote later Tuesday. Speaker Robin Vos has signaled his support for the proposal.
Assembly passage would put the bill in front of Gov. Tony Evers, who can sign it into law or veto it. Evers’ spokesperson, Britt Cudaback, said Monday that the governor supports the plan.
Brewers President of Business Operations Rick Schlesinger called the Senate vote “historic.”
The Brewers require a premier ballpark to drive ticket sales and continue to field competitive teams – making maintenance of the ballpark all the more critical,” he said in a statement.
The Brewers say 22-year-old American Family Field needs extensive repairs. The stadium’s glass outfield doors, seats and concourses need replacing, the stadium’s luxury suites and video scoreboard need upgrades and the stadium’s signature retractable roof, fire suppression systems, parking lots, elevators and escalators need work, according to the team.
Brewers officials initially said the team might leave Milwaukee if they didn’t get public dollars for repairs. Rick Schlesinger, the Brewers’ president of business operations, softened the team’s stance last month, saying the Brewers want to remain in the city “for the next generation.” But the prospect of the team leaving looms.
The Assembly last month approved a plan that calls for the state to contribute $411.5 million and the city of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County to contribute a combined $135 million. The state and the locals would make the payments in annual installments through 2050.
The Brewers would contribute $100 million and extend their lease at the stadium through 2050, guaranteeing Major League Baseball would remain in its smallest market for another 27 years
The Packers return to the practice field today in preparation for Sunday’s home game against the Chargers. Green Bay (3-6) is coming off a 23-19 loss at Pittsburgh to the Steelers (6-3) Sunday.
The Green Bay Packers signed LB Austin Ajiake to the practice squad. The transaction was announced Tuesday by General Manager Brian Gutekunst. (AH-g-kay) Ajiake (6-2, 223), a rookie, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas by the Denver Broncos on Aug. 3, 2023, but was released following training camp. He went on to spend time on the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad. Ajiake played in 48 games with 20 starts for UNLV (2018-22), recording 232 tackles (117 solo), 12 tackles for a loss, four sacks, two interceptions, a pass defensed and a fumble recovery. He earned first-team All-Mountain West honors after finishing No. 5 in the country and tying for No. 4 in school history with 132 tackles (59 solo) in 2022. Ajiake will wear No. 49 for the Packers.
