Tyrone Taylor homered and Adrian Houser pitched five sharp innings as the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 4-0 on Sunday in their final playoff tune-up.
After wrapping up their third division title in six years last week, the Brewers will host the Arizona Diamondbacks in a best-of-three postseason series beginning Tuesday.
“It’s going to be a battle,” Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said. “That’s how it works now. Nobody is going to care about rest. It’s a three-game series where you just go after it and you pull out all the stops.”
The Brewers are hoping for a long postseason run.
Chicago heads home for the winter after falling short down the stretch in a crowded NL wild-card race. Cody Bellinger and the Cubs were eliminated from contention Saturday night, despite a 10-6 win over the Brewers, when Miami finished its 7-3 victory at Pittsburgh to secure a wild card.
On Sunday, Mark Canha blooped an RBI single to right field in the first inning and Milwaukee scored two more runs on Josh Donaldson’s bases-loaded walk and Garrett Mitchell’s sacrifice fly off starter Drew Smyly (11-11).
William Contreras had an infield single to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 18 games.
Smyly got only one out, giving up three runs and two hits while walking three.
Taylor belted a 397-foot solo homer to left with two outs in the sixth.
Houser (8-5), who could figure into the Brewers’ postseason pitching plans at some point, limited the Cubs to three hits while throwing 47 of 72 pitches for strikes. He walked two and struck out five.
Andrew Chafin and Janson Junk finished the five-hitter.
The Brewers finished 92-70 after going 86-76 last season. The Cubs completed the season 83-79 after going 74-88 in 2022.
With a sellout crowd of 42,964 at American Family Field, the Brewers reached total attendance of 2,551,347 for the season, an increase of 5.3% compared with last season’s total of 2,422,420. This season’s figure remains well off the team’s attendance in 2019, the year prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, when 2,923,333 fans attended Brewers home games at what was then known as Miller Park.
The Packers are back after a weekend off following Thursday night’s 34-20 loss at Lambeau Field to the Detroit Lions. Green Bay fell to 2-2 while Detroit is now 3-1 and in first place in the NFC North.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes slid down at the New York Jetss’ ‘ 2-yard line, sealing a 23-20 win over the Jets on Sunday night. Mahomes finished 18-30 for 203 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The Chiefs improve to 3-1 while the Jets fall to 1-3.
Embattled New York Jets quarterback Zack Wilson played the best game of his NFL career on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium, but he lamented the snap that got away.
Wilson fumbled a shotgun snap at midfield with 7:24 remaining in the fourth quarter — the Jets’ final play in their 23-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Afterward, Wilson spoke briefly to the entire team in the locker room, taking responsibility for the defeat.
After a week of intense scrutiny, including criticism from Jets legend Joe Namath, Wilson completed a career-high 28 passes on 39 attempts for 245 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. He posted a career-high 105.2 passer rating. The Jets (1-3) dropped their third straight, but Wilson’s efficiency was a spark they needed after losing Aaron Rodgers to a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in Week 1.

College Football
Wisconsin had a bye. The Badgers host Rutgers Saturday.
Cornell College 36, Ripon College 33- Both teams traded touchdowns early in the first half before Ripon took a 14-7 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Red Hawks extended their lead midway through the second quarter when Jack Berens connected with Alex Mosqueda on a 29-yard touchdown to make it 20-14.
The Rams responded with two touchdowns, including one with 17 seconds left in the second quarter, to take a 21-20 lead at halftime.
Both teams traded touchdowns in the second half with Ripon jumping out to a 33-29 lead with 10:19 left in the fourth quarter.
Cornell College capped off a 12 play, 88-yard drive with a 47-yard touchdown pass to take a 36-33 lead with 3:55 left to play.
On Ripon’s final possession, Berens threw an interception deep into Rams territory, allowing Cornell to run out the final 2:26 left on the clock for a three-point victory.
The Red Hawks are now 1-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Next matchup will be at Knox College on Oct. 7.
UW-Whitewater 37, UW-Oshkosh 21- The matchup was within reach early for the Titans after trailing only 6-0 after the first quarter.
The Warhawks came alive in the second quarter, scoring on every possession.
Whitewater’s Alijah Maher-Parr and Alec Ogden both found the end zone off rushing touchdowns while Jeff Isotalo-McGuire 38-yard field goal soared between the goal posts. The Warhawks entered the locker room up 23-0.
Oshkosh was the only team to find the end zone in the third quarter. The Titans capped off a, 11 play, 73 yard drive with a 5-yard run from Trae Tetzlaff but had a successful two-point conversion called back for a penalty to trail 23-6.
Early the fourth quarter, the Warhawks extended their lead to 31 points following a pick six by Joey Antonietti.
The Titans tacked on two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the latter a 7-yard dive into the endzone by Tetzlaff, to make it a 37-20 game with under 10 minutes in the game.
Oshkosh was unable to find the end zone in the remaining minutes of the fourth quarter, falling to Whitewater 37-21.
The Warhawks have now won three-straight against the Titans.
The Titans drop to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Conference. Oshkosh is at UW-Stout on Saturday.
