James Robinson, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards as a rookie with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020, has joined the Green Bay Packers practice squad.
The Packers announced Tuesday they had added Robinson and cornerback Anthony Johnson to their practice squad. They released cornerback Kiondre Thomas from their practice squad.
Robinson, a 2020 undrafted free agent from Illinois State, rushed for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns and also caught 49 passes for 344 yards and three more scores his rookie year. He followed that up by rushing for 767 yards and eight touchdowns and catching 31 passes for 222 yards in 2021.
Robinson, 25, split the 2022 season between the Jaguars and New York Jets. He rushed for 425 yards and three touchdowns that season while also catching 11 passes for 51 yards and two more scores.
He spent time with both the New England Patriots and New York Giants this offseason but got released by both teams.
Johnson is an undrafted free agent from Virginia, who spent training camp with the New Orleans Saints before getting released.
Meanwhile the Packers return to the practice field today to get ready for Sunday’s game against the Broncos in Denver.
Wisconsin legislators edged closer Tuesday to passing a compromise plan to spend more than half-a-billion dollars in public money to help cover repairs at the Milwaukee Brewers stadium, pushing the proposal through the state Assembly and on to the Senate.
The chamber voted 69-27 to approve the package. The Senate is expected to vote on the plan in November, but senators may attach amendments and send the measure back to the Assembly, the proposal’s sponsors said. Both houses must agree on the same version before the plan can go to Democratic Gov. Tony Evers for his signature. The Brewers contend that American Family Field’s glass outfield doors, seats and concourses should be replaced, and that luxury suites and video scoreboard need upgrades. The stadium’s signature retractable roof, fire suppression systems, parking lots, elevators and escalators need work, as well. Team officials have hinted the Brewers might leave Milwaukee if they don’t get public assistance for repairs.
The funding plan calls for the state to contribute $411 million and the city of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County to contribute a combined $135 million.
The state money would come in the form of grants. The local contribution would be generated from an existing fee the state Department of Administration charges the city and county for administering local sales taxes. Any fee revenue not used to administer the taxes would go to the stadium.
The Brewers have said they will contribute $100 million to repairs and extend their lease at the stadium through 2050 in exchange for the public money. The lease extension would keep Major League Baseball in its smallest market for at least another 27 years.
Only two groups have registered in opposition: conservative political network Americans for Prosperity, and Citizen Action of Wisconsin, a group that describes itself as working for social and environmental justice.
American Family Field opened in 2001 as Miller Park, replacing aging County Stadium. Construction cost about $392 million and was funded largely through a 0.1% sales tax imposed in Milwaukee County and four surrounding counties..
The stadium was renamed American Family Field in 2021.
In the NLCS Tuesday night Philadelphia shutout Arizona 10-0 and lead 2-0 in their best-of-seven game serie.
The Phillies continued hitting home run on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park. Trea Turner went deep in the first inning before Kyle Schwarber homered in the third and sixth innings — all of the solo variety.
Schwarber’s second homer in Game 2 was also his 18th in the postseason, placing him in a tie for seventh most in MLB history with Carlos Correa, Nelson Cruz, Reggie Jackson and Mickey Mantle. Phllies starter Aaron Nola, who’s 3-0 in this post season picked up the win. He gave up 3 hits over 6 innings while striking out 7 and walking none. Arizona’s Merrill Kelly drops to 101 this post season. Kelly gave up 4 runs on 3 hits in 5 2/3 innings while striking out 6 and walking 3.
The teams are off today before the series resumes in Arizona on Thursday.
In the ALCS Houston is at Texas with the Rangers leading 2-0.
