14 October 2023 News

A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s K9 was shot and the man who shot him died during an exchange of gunfire during an incident in Fond du Lac this morning. Just before 6 am Fond du Lac Police officers and County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance involving weapons in the 500 block of Drury Place in the City of Fond du Lac. When officers arrived, they encountered a man in a vehicle and shortly afterwards gunfire was exchanged between a sheriff’s deputy and the suspect. The suspect was injured, and first aid was rendered, but he died at the scene. No members of the public or law enforcement were injured, but Sheriff’s K9 Iro was wounded. Police officers and deputies administered critical care to the dog during transport and he was operated on at a veterinarian hospital. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says the dog is in serious but stable condition. The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave. The state’s Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting. The DCI will review all evidence and determine the facts of the incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
