WINNING POWERBALL TICKET SOLD IN CALIFORNIA
A lucky lottery player in California won the $1.76 billion Powerball jackpot last night. The winning numbers were 22, 24, 40, 52, 64 and the Powerball was 10. The winning ticket was sold at Midway Market & Liquor in Frazier Park, which is about 75 miles northwest of Los Angeles. If the winner or winners go for the lump sum they would get $756.6 million before taxes. The only top prize that was even bigger was the $2.04 billion Powerball won by a player in California last November. Wisconsin had two Powerball winners Wednesday night. Someone in Tomah who bought a ticket with a multiplier of two won $100,000, and a ticket sold in Grand Chute was worth $50,000.
WAUTOMA HIGH SCHOOL THREAT UNSUBSTANTIATED
A threat by a student at the Wautoma High School about a shooting was determined to be “unsubstantiated” during a subsequent investigation. Principal Jennifer Johnson sent out a letter to parents and guardians Wednesday saying, “Unfortunately, today a student at the high school made a comment to other students in a classroom that they should not come to school on Thursday or Friday because of the idea of a shooting.” Wautoma Area School District administrators worked with local law enforcement to assess the threat. Based on that Johnson said in the letter that they did not believe there was a threat to the high school, students and staff members.
SAND MINE DECISION APPEALED
An appeal has been filed by Faulk Brothers Construction on the decision to deny a permit for a sand mine on the Iola Car Show grounds. In August the Waupaca County Planning and Zoning Board denied a permit for the mine, by a 3 to 2 vote. The mine was proposed in order to extract materials for additional parking structures for the car show. Local residents massed opposition to it. A public hearing is scheduled at the Waupaca County Courthouse on October 30th at 9 am. People can attend the Planning and Zoning Board meeting in person or via Zoom.
RESTAURANT PROTECTION BILL
State Representative Alex Dallman is hoping a bill he authored will provide protection to restaurants that aren’t always aware of who is using their menus or logos on the Internet. The bill will be on the Assembly Floor today. The state lawmaker from Green Lake says not all food delivery services get a restaurant’s permission to use their menus and logos for offering delivery of their food. He says if a restaurant knows they would be prepared when a customer has a bad experience and they are confronted about it. Dallman says this would protect a restaurant from an Uber Eats, DoorDash or other delivery service using their food. He says restaurants work hard to put together menus, prepare food and develop their clientele.

CWD DETECTED IN OUTAGAMIE COUNTY DEER
Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources was recently notified by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection that a deer farm in Outagamie County tested positive for chronic wasting disease. This positive result is within 10 miles of Calumet, Waupaca, and Winnebago county borders and will enact a new baiting and feeding ban to go into effect in Calumet County on Friday. State law requires that the DNR enact a three-year baiting and feeding ban in counties where CWD has been detected, as well as a two-year ban in adjoining counties within 10 miles of a CWD detection. If additional CWD cases are found during the lifetime of a baiting and feeding ban, the ban will renew for an additional two or three years. Calumet County’s ban will be for two years. Outagamie will renew the ban already in place. Waupaca and Winnebago counties currently have a baiting and feeding ban in place from positive detections within each county. The bans in these counties are not renewed by this detection, because they are longer than the two-year ban that would result from this detection.
