From Wayne Mausser

The defense did plenty to help the Packers win a game Monday night. The offense just failed to do its part, which has been a common theme lately for a young group suffering serious growing pains.  in the bye week, coach Matt LaFleur and his staff will have to find a way to get it going.

The problem is that the Packers already have shown that extra time to prepare doesn’t necessarily pay off.  The problem is that the Packers already have shown that extra time to prepare doesn’t necessarily pay off.

Green Bay was playing in Las Vegas 11 nights after its 34-20 home loss to Detroit, so the Packers had plenty of opportunities during that layoff to sort out their problems. The offense responded with perhaps its worst performance of the season.

After averaging 31 points over their first two games, the Packers have averaged just 17 over their past three. The offense’s plunge explains why the Packers are below .500 for the first time this season.

The Packers have been outscored 54-6 in the first half of their past three games. … After committing just three turnovers through their first four games, the Packers matched that total Monday. All three turnovers were interceptions from Love. … The offensive line couldn’t contain Las Vegas’ Maxx Crosby, who had one sack and four tackles for loss. … The offense scored a touchdown on just one of three trips to the red zone, settling for field goals on the other two occasions.

Green Bay already had entered the season with the league’s youngest roster before injuries took away two of their most proven offensive players.

Left tackle David Bakhtiari who turned 32 on Sept. 30 and is Green Bay’s oldest player, will miss the rest of the season because of the knee issues that have bothered him ever since he tore his anterior cruciate ligament on Dec. 31, 2020. Running back Aaron Jones has missed three of the Packers’ past four games because of a hamstring issue.

Guards Elgton Jenkins and Jon Runyan Jr. and center Josh Myers were the only players on Green Bay’s first-team offense Monday with multiple years of starting experience.

That first-team offense included two rookies (wide receiver Jayden Reed and tight end Luke Musgrave), four second-year players (wide receivers Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs and tackles Rasheed Walker and Zach Tom) and a first-year starting quarterback (2020 first-round draft pick Jordan Love).

The Packers next game is at Denver against the Broncos on October 22nd.

As the Packers enter their Week 6 bye, they have made a couple of roster moves.

Green Bay has re-signed linebacker Justin Hollins and waived running back Patrick Taylor, per the transaction wire.

Hollins was released on Monday to make room for Taylor on the active roster. The Packers were down a running back with Aaron Jones missing the contest against the Raiders due to injury.

Taylor had a pair of carries for 2 yards and caught two passes for 5 yards on Monday.

Hollins has recorded nine total tackles in four games for Green Bay this season.

Taylor had been on Green Bay’s practice squad before Monday night and could rejoin that group this week.

Despite a disappointing end to the 2023 season, Milwaukee Brewers general manager Matt Arnold says a championship remains the team’s goal.

“We are dedicated to winning the last game of the season,” he said in his season-ending news conference Tuesday. “We want to win a World Series.”

As Arnold and the Brewers look ahead to 2024, the offseason will hinge on the future of manager Craig Counsell managed in the final year of his contract in 2023, and, while the team wants him to return, Arnold said he would not put a timetable on Counsell’s decision.

Arnold said the team is also waiting to hear about the health of pitcher Brandon Woodruff. Woodruff is getting a second opinion on his pitching shoulder, after he was ruled out of the team’s first-round playoff series.against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Woodruff is one of three key Brewers players who are entering the final year of their contracts in 2024. Arnold said the team would be comfortable having all three play with their futures uncertain, but did acknowledge that the team would entertain trade offers.

Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson will miss at least the next four games because of a strained right hamstring he suffered Sunday in the team’s 27-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the biggest blow in what has been a catastrophic start to the team’s season.

The Vikings plan to place Jefferson on injured reserve Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed, to ensure that he does not return to the field too early and suffer a setback. The earliest he could be activated is for a Week 10 game against the New Orleans Saints, but the Vikings will determine at that point whether he’s ready to resume playing or if he needs more time.

The decision tracks with what coach Kevin O’Connell said Monday during a news conference with reporters.

Losing Jefferson, the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2022, will further impair a Vikings team that has started the season 1-4 and has three of its next four games on the road. Their only home game in that stretch is against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers .

As part of their annual Festival of Lights, the Green Bay Packers are looking for a tree and are taking proposals from fans.

Any interested residents from Wisconsin or the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with a 40-50 foot tall evergreen tree are asked to submit a proposal to the Festival of Lights website. The proposals should have a photo of the tree and a written proposal of 100 words or less. The selected proposal this year will receive 4 tickets to the Packers game vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Dec. 17.

The Packers will be taking proposals until Wednesday, Nov. 8.

After the winner is selected, the Packers will arrange for harvest and transport of the tree. The tree will arrive at Lambeau Field on Monday, Nov. 27 and be part of an event at the Lambeau Field Atrium to celebrate the holiday season, headlined by the formal lighting of the tree in Harlan Plaza. Volunteers will also be at the event to collect toys and donations for Toys for Tots.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has released their yearly Deer Hunter Wildlife Survey and is seeking participation from deer hunters.

In recognition of World Mental Health Day, the Wisconsin Herd announced its unique plans to increase awareness of suicide prevention.

During the team’s game on Dec. 15th, the Herd — the Milwaukee Bucks’ NBA G League affiliate — is changing its name to “Wisconsin BEHERD” with players wearing one-of-a-kind jerseys that will be auctioned off following the game.

Proceeds from the jersey auction will benefit NAMI Oshkosh, a non-profit organization that offers education, support and advocacy for individuals affected by mental illness.

“We are proud to announce our Wisconsin BEHERD platform in partnership with Rhyme. Our hope for the event is to bring attention to an important initiative by showing everyone they are not alone, and our community stands together to support those who may be struggling,” Herd Team President Steve Brandes said in a news release.

In honor of the Wisconsin BEHERD game, Herd players will wear special jerseys featuring shades of teal and purple — the main colors of suicide prevention.

According to the news release, “The jersey pays homage to the Van Gogh painting ‘Les Irises’ with irises covering the jersey which is used as a symbol of hope, courage and recovery for individuals and their families living with mental illness.”
