DRUG EXPOSURE A RISK FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT
Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says one of their K9 handlers was very fortunate when he was unintentionally exposed to fentanyl during a traffic stop last month. The deputy and his K9 were backing up another deputy who asked for a K9 to do an open air sniff to indicate whether drugs were in the vehicle. Sheriff Waldschmidt says a bag containing fentanyl had a hole in it and the deputy was exposed to it while it was being handled. Some of the substance made its way into the air and the deputy accidentally consumed or inhaled it. The deputy recognized right away he was feeling the effects and was taken to St. Agnes Hospital where he was treated and released. There have been no lingering effects from the exposure. Sheriff Waldschmidt says they train on how to handle dangerous drugs and the personal protective equipment to wear when handling them, but they handle a lot of dangerous drugs. Waldschmidt says it is the first case he knows of where one of their deputies was exposed to fentanyl to that extent.
