David Montgomery rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns, and the Detroit Lions asserted themselves as the team to beat in the NFC North, dominating the first half and beating the Green Bay Packers 34-20 on Thursday night.

Montgomery carried the ball 32 times after he sat out the Lions’ victory over Atlanta last Sunday with a thigh bruise. He became the first Lion to rush for three touchdowns at Green Bay and the first Detroit player to top 100 yards rushing with three TDs since James Stewart in 2000.

The Lions (3-1) beat the Packers (2-2) for a fourth straight time, a streak that also includes the final game of last season, when Detroit denied Green Bay a playoff spot in Aaron Rodgers’ last game with the Packers.

Rodgers’ replacement, Jordan Love, threw for a touchdown and ran for another as he tried to rally the Packers in the second half. He went 23 of 36 for 246 yards and was picked off twice by Jerry Jacobs.

Detroit led 27-3 at halftime and had outgained Green Bay 284 yards to 21 as the half ended with boos from the crowd. It was the Lions’ highest-scoring first half against the Packers in the series’ 188-game history.

Meanwhile, the Packers placed David Bakhtiari on injured reserve, knocking the star left tackle out for at least the next four weeks.

The team announced the news on ahead of Thursday’s game against Detroit. It’s unclear when or if Bakhtiari will return this season, according to a report by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Bakhtiari has not practiced since training camp, but played against the Bears in week one. Playing 55 of the possible 60 offensive snaps in the game.

He then missed the week two match-up with the Falcons, and was already ruled out for the Lions game at Lambeau Field.

Bakhtiari suffered a torn ACL in his in his left knee on New Years Eve 2020, and missed the entire 2021 season before returning last year. He missed a total of six games in 2022, four of which came after his return against Tampa Bay in week three.

The Packers signed linebacker Kristian Welch to the active roster from the practice squad in a corresponding roster move. Cornerbacks Corey Ballentine and Kiondre Thomas were also elevated to the active roster for game day.

Elsewhere in the NFC North Sunday the Bears host the Bronco’s. Both teams are 0-3. The Vikings are at Carolina with both teams also winless on the season.

Garrett Mitchell doubled, walked twice and scored in his first big league game since April, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 on Thursday.

Corbin Burnes, Julio Teheran (3-5) and Ethan Small combined on a six-hitter for the NL Central champions. Burnes struck out four and walked one in four innings in his final postseason tuneup, throwing 39 of his 66 pitches for strikes.

The Brewers (90-69) reinstated Mitchell from the 60-day injured list. The 24-year-old Mitchell, a 2020 first-round pick, hurt his left shoulder on a slide into third base on April 18. He had surgery in May to repair a torn labrum, and it was thought at that time that a return at any point this season would be improbable.

“I was trying to put good at-bats together, swinging at the right pitches and taking the bad ones. It felt good to go up there and see some success today,” Mitchell said. “More than anything, I’m just happy that I made it back and I’m healthy.”

Mitchell led off the third with a double off the wall in left on Dakota Hudson’s first pitch of the inning. Christian Yelich then hit an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.

The Brewers reached 90 wins for the third time in the last six seasons.

St. Louis lost its 90th game for the first time since going 70-92 in 1990. In addition to that 1990 season, the Cardinals are assured of finishing in last place for only the second time since 1918.

Hudson (6-3) was charged with three runs and seven hits in five-plus innings. He struck out three and walked three.

Yelich also doubled and scored on William Contreras’ single in the first. Contreras extended his hitting streak to a career-high 15 games.

The Brewers added another run when Carlos Santana scampered home on Willy Adames’ double-play grounder in the sixth.

The Cardinals loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but Juniel Querecuto lined to shortstop and Burnes fanned Masyn Winn to reach 200 strikeouts for the third consecutive season.

After Burnes departed, Teheran pitched four innings. Small, making his fourth major league appearance, got three outs for his first career save.

The Brewers designated infielder/outfielder Brian Anderson for assignment to make room for Mitchell.

Contreras has four hitting streaks of 10 or more games this season. He is the first Brewer to accomplish that feat since Norichika Aoki in 2012.

The Brewers host the Cubs on Friday in the opener of a three-game set to end the regular season. Colin Rea (6-6, 4.74 ERA) gets the start for Milwaukee.  First pitch is at 7:10.

Elsewhere in the NL Central the Braves downed the Cubs 5-3 the Pirates nipped the Phillies 3-2 and the Reds had the day off going into the final weekend of the regular season.

In college football the Badgers (3-1) are off Saturday.
