William Contreras homered and Tyrone Taylor scored twice and drove in a run as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3 on Tuesday night.
Milwaukee stopped a two-game skid and reduced its magic number to clinch the NL Central to six.
Richie Palacios homered for the last-place Cardinals, who were eliminated from playoff contention.
Contreras’ solo homer in the third snapped a 16-inning scoring drought for Milwaukee.
The Brewers opened the fourth with four straight doubles. Willy Adames, Josh Donaldson, Taylor and Sal Frelick all doubled and scored to give Milwaukee a 5-2 lead. Taylor also walked twice and scored on Andruw Monasterio’s sacrifice fly in the eighth. Contreras scored on Adames’ single in the ninth to pad the Brewers’ lead.
Colin Rea (6-6), recalled Monday from Triple-A Nashville, allowed one run in 4 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed three hits, walked three and struck out two.

Alec Burleson doubled home Lars Nootbaar, stole third and scored on Nolan Arenado’s sacrifice fly to give St. Louis a 2-0 lead in the first. Palacios added a solo home run in the fifth.
Brewers OF Christian Yelich (stiff back) missed his fourth straight game and 10th in the past 11, but showed enough improvement to avoid being placed on the injured list. He is day-to-day.
Brewers RHP Adrian Houser (6-4, 4.53 ERA) starts Wednesday night against Cardinals LHP Zack Thompson (5-6, 4.34). Houser is 4-5 with a 3.19 ERA in 14 career games (11 starts) versus St. Louis, and the Brewers are 12-6 when he starts this season. Thompson will make his first career start against Milwaukee, but he is 3-0 with a 4.24 ERA in three starts this season against NL Central teams. First pitch is at 6:45.
Elsewhere in the NL Central Tuesday the Cubs bombed the Pirates 14-1 and the Twins shutout the Reds 7-0. The Brewers maintained their 6 game lead over the Cubs and lead the Reds by 7 games in the division.
The Packers (1-1) return to the practice field today in preparation for Sunday’s home opener against the New Orleans Saints (2-0). The Packers are coming off a 25-24 loss at Atlanta after being outscored in the second half 13-0. The Saints edged the Titans at home 16-15.
The Packers will open up competition at left guard after two-time Pro Bowler Elgton Jenkins left the game in the first half Sunday with an MCL sprain. It’s not known how long he’ll be out.
Nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2024 class were announced on Tuesday and several of the names on the list are ones Packers fans will recognize.
Of this year’s 173 nominees, nine are first-year eligible players — including four with ties to Green Bay — who have a chance to make it to Canton on the first ballot: Jordy Nelson, Josh Sitton, T.J, Lang and Julius Peppers.
Fan-favorite wide receiver Nelson played nine seasons with the Packers and was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame on Aug. 31. He ranks fourth in team history in receptions (550), sixth in receiving yards (7,848), third in touchdown receptions (69) and fourth in 100-yard receiving games (25). Nelson finished his career playing one season with the Oakland Raiders.
A fourth-round NFL Draft selection, Sitton started 112 of 121 regular-season games during his eight seasons on the Packers’ offensive line. He was a three-time Pro Bowler and was named the 2010 Offensive Lineman of the Year by the NFL Alumni Association. Sitton was inducted alongside Nelson into the Packers Hall of Fame last month. After leaving Green Bay, he played two seasons with the Chicago Bears and one season with the Miami Dolphins.
Lang played eight of his 10 seasons with the Packers, as well as two with his home-state Detroit Lions, and received a Pro-Bowl selection with each team. He started 94 regular-season and nine postseason games at guard for Green Bay.
Peppers, a three-time All-Pro lineman, spent 17 seasons in the NFL that included stops with the Panthers, Bears and Packers. He ended his career with 159.5 sacks, 25 of which were recorded during his three years in Green Bay.
The list of 173 nominees will be trimmed to 25 semifinalists in November and to 15 in January.
From there, the selection committee will meet early next year to reduce the candidates to 10, then to five. Those final five candidates must get 80% of the votes from the panel to be accepted as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The Green Bay Packers are reminding ticketholders to update their app before the next game, or they might not get into Lambeau Field.
The latest version of the Packers mobile app features critical updates to the app’s integration with Ticketmaster. Because of these changes, fans and ticket holders must update their Packers app prior to arriving at Lambeau Field to access their tickets to Sunday’s game through the app.
Fans who do not update their Packers app before gameday will not be able to access their tickets through the app, the Packers said in a statement Tuesday. Those who cannot update the app can still access their tickets via web browser.
The Packers website has more information on the app.
