Braxton Garrett pitched six innings of four-hit ball and the Miami Marlins beat the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 on Wednesday night.

After dropping the first two games of the four-game series, Miami (75-71) moved within one-half game of Cincinnati and Arizona for the final NL wild-card spot.

Garrett (9-6) struck out seven and walked two. The Marlins turned two double plays behind the 26-year-old left-hander, who didn’t allow a runner past second base.

Three relievers completed a seven-hitter for Miami, with Tanner Scott working the ninth for his eighth save. Tyrone Taylor reached on a throwing error by third baseman Jake Burger leading off the ninth. Scott then retired Victor Caratini, Sal Frelick and Joey Wiemer.

Colin Rea (5-6) followed opener Trevor Megill and allowed one run in 4 2/3 innings for the Brewers, who were shut out for the 11th time this season.

In the fifth, Jesús Sánchez singled and was awarded second base when first baseman Carlos Santana stepped into his team’s dugout after catching a foul ball by Bryan De La Cruz. Sánchez scored on Xavier Edwards’ single.

Miami made it 2-0 in the seventh when De La Cruz doubled off Andrew Chafin and Garrett Sampson followed with a double against Bryse Wilson.

Milwaukee started the eighth with singles by William Contreras and Santana off Andrew Nardi. But Willy Adames hit into a double play and Josh Donaldson struck out.

Meanwhile, Brewers LF Christian Yelich (back) missed his fifth consecutive game.  LF Mark Canha (left wrist), who left Tuesday’s game in the third inning, is day to day, manager according to manager Craig Counsell.

The four-game series concludes this afternoon as Milwaukee RHP Adrian Houser (5-4, 4.58 ERA) makes his first start since a stint on the IL with a right elbow injury as the series concludes Thursday. Miami will counter with right-hander Eury Perez (5-4, 2.90 ERA).  First pitch is at 1:10.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednesday the Rockies beat the Cubs 7-3, the Pirates nipped he Nationals 7-6, the Cardinals shutout the Orioles 1-0 and the Reds slipped past the Tigers 4-3.  The Brewers remain 4 games ahead of the Cubs in the division.

In the National League East the Braves clinched their 6th straight division title with a 4-1 victory over the Phillies Wednesday night.

The Midwest League Divisional Series continues tonight as Fort Wayne plays at Great Lakes and Peoria is at Cedar Rapids.

The Packers were back on the practice field Wednesday as they get ready for Sunday’s game at Atlanta against the Falcons.  Sunday’s pregame starts at 10:00 with the kickoff at noon on FM 1023, The Bug.

In Thursday Night Football the Vikings (0-1) play the Eagles (1-0) in Philadelphia.

Aaron Rodgers’ season is over. It appears he might not be ready to call it a career.

“The night is darkest before the dawn,” the New York Jets quarterback wrote on Instagram on Wednesday night. “And I shall rise yet again.”

Rodgers is out for the season with a torn left Achilles tendon injury, suffered on the fourth snap of his debut with his new team Monday night. The 39-year-old quarterback had not commented publicly since the injury during the Jets’ season-opening 22-16 overtime win over Buffalo.

“Thank you to every person that has reached out, called, texted, DM’d, connected through a friend, etc.,” Rodgers wrote. “It has meant a ton to me, and I’ll try and get back to all of you soon.

“I’m completely heartbroken and moving through all of the emotions, but deeply touched and humbled by the support and love. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I begin the healing process today.”

Rodgers closed his post with: “Proud of my guys, 1-0.”

There had been some doubt as to whether Rodgers would consider retiring, although Jets coach Robert Saleh offered some optimism earlier Wednesday.

“I haven’t gone down that road with him,” Saleh said. “I mean, I’d be shocked if this is the way he’s going to go out. But at the same time, for him, he’s working through a whole lot of head space, things that he needs to deal with.

Rodgers turns 40 in December and had considered retirement before coming out of a self-reflective darkness retreat in February and saying he intended to continue to play — and wanted it to be with the Jets.
