Josh Donaldson homered for the first time with his new team and Freddy Peralta turned in another stellar outing as the Milwaukee Brewers downed the Miami Marlins 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Milwaukee (81-63) is a season-high 18 games above .500 and reached the mark for the first time since it finished the 2021 season at 95-67.

Donaldson hit a solo home run deep into the second deck in left with one out in the fourth off Edward Cabrera (6-7) to put the Brewers in front 2-1. It was Donaldson’s 11th homer of the season and first as a Brewer. Donaldson, who also singled and drew a pair of walks, began the season with the Yankees but was released in August and later signed by Milwaukee to a minor league deal. He was called up from Triple-A Nashville on Monday.

Peralta (12-8), who entered having gone 5-0 with a 2.09 ERA over his last eight starts, surrendered a leadoff homer to Luis Arraez on the third pitch of the game but then retired 19 of the next 20 batters and recorded nine strikeouts to reach 200 for the season.

Peralta gave up one run and two hits in 6 1/3 innings and didn’t walk a batter. He threw 95 pitches, 67 for strikes.

Devin Williams retired the side in order in the ninth to record his 33rd save in 37 tries.

JT Chargois opened for the Marlins and faced the minimum in the first before Cabrera entered in the second and walked the first three batters he faced. After striking out Brice Turang, Cabrera walked Andruw Monasterio to force in the tying run. Cabrera retired the next two as the Brewers left the bases loaded.

Cabrera gave up one hit and two runs in 4 2/3 innings, while walking six and striking out five.

William Contreras’ sacrifice fly in the seventh extended the Brewers lead to 3-1.

LHP Braxton Garrett (8-6, 3.82 ERA) will pitch for the Marlins on Wednesday against Brewers right-hander Trevor McGill (1-0, 3.38 ERA) First pitch is at 6:40.

In other games Wednesday in the NL Central the Pirates beat the Nationals 5-1, the Cardinals downed the Orioles 5-2, the Reds nipped the Tigers 6-5 and the Rockies beat the Cubs 6-4.  The Brewers extended their lead over the Cubs to 4 games in the division.

Aaron Rodgers has a ton left Achilles tendon, according to a person familiar with the diagnosis, and the quarterback likely will miss the rest of the New York Jets’ season.

An MRI on Tuesday confirmed the four-time NFL MVP’s injury, the person told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t announce it. Coach Robert Saleh was scheduled to speak to reporters on a video call later Tuesday.

NFL Network first reported Rodgers tore the Achilles tendon, confirming the Jets’ fears.

“Concerned with his Achilles,” Saleh said after the Jets’ 22-16 overtime win over Buffalo on Monday night. “MRI is probably going to confirm what we think is going to happen, so prayers tonight. But it’s not good.”

On his fourth regular-season snap in a Jets uniform, Rodgers tried to avoid a rushing Leonard Floyd, who wrapped up the quarterback and spun him down to the MetLife Stadium turf. Rodgers stood up after a few moments, looked over to the Jets’ sideline and then sat on the turf – seemingly knowing he was seriously hurt.

He needed help from trainers to get to New York’s sideline, where he was taken to the blue medical tent to be examined. Rodgers then got on a cart to go to the locker room, hopped off near the tunnel and limped inside.

Zach Wilson replaced Rodgers just 3:45 into the game and finished 14 of 21 for 140 yards with a touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson and an interception in the victory.  The third-year quarterback will now start for the Jets on Sunday at Dallas — and the foreseeable future.

The Jets had high hopes for Rodgers after trading for the longtime Green Bay Packers star in April.

From the Packers’ standpoint, the injury means Green Bay will receive the Jets’ second-round draft pick in 2024, instead of New York’s first-round pick. Rodgers would have had to play 65% of the Jets’ offensive snaps for the Packers to get the earlier pick.

Meanwhile, after watching his friend Aaron Rodgers go down with that season-ending injury, Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari appeared on the Rich Eisen Show.  Bakhtiari, who has been critical of the NFL for not going to all grass inside its stadiums, said there’s no reason for NFL teams to still be using artificial turf.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love showed Sunday just how much he had learned the past three seasons as the backup to Rodgers. The 2020 first-round pick from Utah State delivered a poised performance despite playing without his top returning receiver in Christian Watson, who was out with a hamstring injury.

Green Bay’s shift from the 39-year-old Rodgers to the 24-year-old Love signified the youth movement of the entire Packers’ roster. The only Packers in their 30s are offensive tackle David Bakhtiari, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell and outside linebacker Preston Smith.

The Packers’ rookie class had a huge day.

Anders Carlson kicked a 52-yard field goal. Luke Musgrave had three catches for 50 yards. Jayden Reed caught two passes for 48 yards and also had a 25-yard punt return. First round draft pick Lukas Van Ness and Karl Brooks each had a sack.

The Packers’ second-year pros also delivered. Romeo Doubs caught two touchdown passes. Zach Tom started at right tackle and contributed to a quality offensive line performance. Quay Walker scored on a 37-yard interception return. Devonte Wyatt had 1 sack.

The Packers need to do a better job of avoiding penalties. They were flagged nine times for 90 yards. The Packers also gained just 2.9 yards per rush.

The Packers are back on the practice field today as they prepare to face the Atlanta Falcons on the road Sunday.  Atlanta opened their season with a 24-10 home victory over the Carolina Panthers.

The Harlem Globetrotters are making their annual holiday season appearance in Northeast Wisconsin.

The basketball showmen are set to perform at the Resch Center Dec. 26. It includes a game against the Globetrotters’ longtime rivals, the Washington Generals.

The Midwest League Divisional Series began Tuesday night.  Fort Wayne won at home over Great Lakes 5-0 and Cedar Rapids lost at Peoria 4-3.  There are no games scheduled for today.

David Stearns has agreed to become president of baseball operations for the underperforming New York Mets, according to several reports.

The 38-year-old will serve under owner Steve Cohen and above general manager Billy Eppler, the reports said Tuesday. Stearns led the Milwaukee Brewers’ baseball operations department from September of 2015 through the 2022 season before stepping down and moving into an advisory role..

Stearns is a New York City native and a Harvard graduate who interned with the Mets in 2007. There had long been speculation that he might one day return to Queens.

Milwaukee was one win from a World Series berth in 2018 and returned to the playoffs each of the next three seasons. The Brewers won NL Central titles in 2018 and 2021.

Stearns takes over a team that opened the season with a record $355 million payroll and became a huge disappointment. The Mets began Tuesday a season-worst 13 games under .500 at 65-78 and were eliminated from the NL East race on Sept. 2. They were 10 games back in the wild-card chase with 19 to play and six teams ahead of them for the final berth.
