Cody Bellinger drove in the tiebreaking run with a ricochet infield single in the eighth inning and the Chicago Cubs beat Milwaukee 3-2 on Wednesday to pull within three games of the first-place Brewers in the NL Central.

Bellinger’s sharply hit ball up the middle glanced off the right ankle or foot of reliever Joel Payamps and to third baseman Andruw Monasterio. Bellinger beat out Monasterio’s throw, allowing Mike Tauchman to score from third. It was Chicago’s third and final hit of the game.

After dropping the first game of the series Monday, the Cubs came back to take the next two with solid pitching and defense. At 71-62, Chicago is a season-high nine games above .500.

Chicago had ended Milwaukee’s nine-game winning streak Tuesday with a 1-0 win behind six solid innings from All-Star left-hander Justin Steele, followed by three innings of one-hit relief.

Adbert Alzolay (2-4) got the final four outs in this one for the win, despite hitting Mark Canha with bases loaded in the eighth to force in the tying run. Payamps (4-4) took the loss.

Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks pitched six crisp innings, allowing only an unearned run on four hits while striking out six and walking two. Ian Happ and Dansby Swanson drove in runs in the first.

Milwaukee’s Brandon Woodruff settled in after Chicago jumped ahead 2-0. The right-hander allowed two runs on two hits, while striking out eight and walking one in in six innings in a second straight strong outing.

William Contreras drove in Milwaukee’s first run.

The Brewers tied it at 2 with two outs in the eighth, taking advantage of a rare Cubs bullpen meltdown. With Chicago ahead 2-1, Sal Frelick singled off Mark Leiter Jr., Chicago’s second reliever. Leiter walked the next two hitters to load the bases.

Alzolay entered and hit Canha with his second pitch.

The Brewers are off Thursday.  RHP Freddy Peralta (11-8, 3.95 ERA) pitches against Philadelphia on Friday night at American Family Field.. The Phillies had not yet named a starter.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Wednsday the Cardinals nipped the Padres 5-4, the Reds beat the Giants 4-1 and the Pirates downed the Royals 4-1.  The Brewers now lead the Cubs by 3 games and the Reds by 6 in the division.

In the Midwest League Wednesday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at Beloit 7-2. They meet again tonight with the first pitch at 6:35.

One day after cutting down the roster to the NFL maximum 53 players for the regular season, the Green Bay Packers released LB Tariq Carpenter and DL Jonathan Ford. In their place Green Bay signed TE Ben Sim and S Zayne Anderson to the roster.

Additionally, Green Bay signed the following players to the practice squad: TE Austin Allen, CB Corey Ballentine, LB Keshawn Banks, WR Grant DuBose, C James Empey, S Innis Gaines, QB Alex McGough, WR Bo Melton, LB Arron Mosby, LB Kenneth Odumegwu, FB Henry Pearson, S Benny Sapp III, DL Chris Slayton, RB Patrick Taylor, T Kadeem Telfort and CB Kiondre Thomas.

All 16 players signed to the practice squad spent time with the Packers during this past training camp.

Two legends enter the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame on Thursday. Former wide receiver Jordy Nelson and guard Josh Sitton are being inducted in a ceremony.

The Packers selected them both in the 2008 NFL Draft. More than 15 years later, both carry some impressive stats to back up how deserving they are of this honor.

Nelson played for 9 seasons. 2014 was one of his career-defining seasons when he set personal highs with 98 receptions and over 1,500 receiving yards. After a knee injury forced him to sit out the 2015 season, he named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year for 97 receptions, including 14 touchdowns, and 1,257 yards in 2016.

Sitton wore a Packers jersey for 8 seasons, quickly establishing himself as one of the most notable guards in the National Football League. With the Packers he made the Pro Bowl three times and earned second-team All-Pro honors three times. Further backing up his accomplishments, the NFL named him the 2010 Offensive Lineman of the Year.

The hall of fame induction also highlights hard work behind the scenes. Ted Eisenreich, a former Packers director of facility operations, is receiving the Bob Harlan Leadership Award. Eisenreich made sure the Packers could continue playing in Lambeau Field during the lengthy, extensive redevelopment completed back in 2003.

The Bart and Cherry Starr Award is going to Tom Konop, a former Packers Hall of Fame president for protecting the team’s history for fans to see for years to come.

In college football tonight Nebraska visits Minnesota in a Big Ten West matchup.
