William Contreras homered and doubled, Sal Frelick drove in three runs and the Milwaukee Brewers capitalized on San Diego’s control problems to beat the Padres 10-6 on Sunday for their eighth consecutive victory.

The Brewers have scored at least five runs in each game during this win streak and had at least six runs in all but one of them. They had scored as many as five runs just 53 times In their first 122 games.

Milwaukee’s seven-run sixth inning matched its most productive inning this season and helped the Brewers erase an early 4-1 deficit. The Brewers drew five walks during that rally, including one to Carlos Santana that forced home the go-ahead run.

The Brewers also had seven-run innings April 3rd against the New York Mets and May 14th against Kansas City.

San Diego answered with two runs in the seventh and had the tying run at the plate with no outs before Hoby Milner protected the 9-6 advantage by retiring Juan Soto, Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts in order.

The Padres went 0 for 12 with runners in scoring position.

Milwaukee completed a three-game sweep of the Padres and extended its longest winning streak of the year. The Brewers have swept three straight series of at least two games for the first time since April 2014.

The Brewers lead the NL Central by four games over the Chicago Cubs heading into a three-game series beginning Monday at Wrigley Field.

“It’s going to be a fun series,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “That’s how I look at it. As you get down to the end, the series all become more fun because they all become a little more important.”

The Brewers, who drew a season-high nine walks Sunday, continue to capitalize on big innings. They scored five runs in the third inning of a 7-3 victrory Friday and five more in the fifth inning of a 5-4 triumph Saturday.

Milwaukee overcame an injury to starter Adrian Houser, who gave up four runs in two innings before departing with what the team called minor right forearm tightness.

Houser allowed a two-run homer to Gary Sanchez and a solo shot to Matthew Batten in the second,

Bryse Wilson (6-0) pitched four shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out four.

Milwaukee trailed 4-2 with one out in the sixth when Canha singled and Brice Turang walked against Michael Wacha. Steven Wilson (1-2) loaded the bases with a walk to Andruw Monasterio and allowed a tying, two-run double to pinch-hitter Rowdy Tellez.

Wilson intentionally walked Christian Yelich and retired Contreras before walking Santana, bringing home Monasterio. Frelick greeted Nick Martinez with a two-run double and Canha capped the rally with a two-run single.

The Padres mounted a comeback of their own in the seventh without the benefit of a hit. Abner Uribe threw a pair of run-scoring wild pitches before Milner stranded his inherited runners.

LHP Wade Miley (6-3, 3.18) starts for the Brewers and RHP Jameson Taillon (7-8, 5.60) pitches for the Cubs on Monday.

Elsewhere in the NL Central Sunday the Cubs pounded the Pirates 10-1, the Phillies shutout the Cardinals 3-0 and the Diamondbacks beat the Reds 5-2.   The Brewers lead the Cubs by 4 games and the Reds by 6 in the division.

In the Midwest League Sunday the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers won at home over Quad Cities 9-4. There are no games scheduled today.

In golf, Viktor Hovland won the Tour Championship by 5 strokes over Xander Schauflee at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta on Sunday. Hovland carded a 7-under 63 in the final round.

The Norwegian-born Hovland started the staggered-scoring event at 8 under and shot 19 under on his own to finish 27 under. He was 11 shots better than U.S. Open winner Wyndam Clark, who finished third, and 13 better than Rory McIlroy, who was fourth.

It was Hovland’s second straight victory after he captured the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields, Illinois, last week. His latest victory came with the FedEx Cup and an $18 million bonus. Hovland, 24, earned $21.6 million over the past two weeks.

In gymnastics Simone Biles won her 8th National Championship Sunday in San Jose.  The 26-year old became the oldest woman to win a national title since USA Gymnastics began organizing the event in 1963

Jordan Love threw a touchdown pass to Christian Watson in his third and final series of the day and the Green Bay Packers defeated the Seattle Seahawks 19-15 on Saturday in the last preseason game for both teams.

This game represented Love’s last tune-up before he begins his first full season as the Packers’ starting quarterback following the trade of four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. Love, a 2020 first-round pick from Utah State, has made one career regular-season start.

Love went 9 of 15 for 63 yards and had three carries for 21 yards against a Seattle defense consisting mostly of reserves. He went 21 of 33 for 193 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in three preseason starts for the Packers (2-1).

His 6-yard touchdown pass to Watson capped a 15-play, 80-yard drive and came after he had overthrown an open Watson on a deep pass earlier in the series. The Packers made a field goal and went three-and-out in Love’s two other drives.

The Packers are hoping Love can make the same type of impact Seattle’s Geno Smith produced last season when he led the Seahawks to a surprise playoff berth after they traded nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. The Seahawks (2-1) rested Smith and most of their starters on both sides of the ball Saturday, giving backup quarterback Drew Lock the chance to lead Seattle’s offense for virtually the entire game.

Lock went 16 of 25 for 150 yards with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jake Bobo, a rookie undrafted free agent from UCLA whose impressive preseason could earn him a spot on Seattle’s 53-man roster. Lock also led a 10-play, 89-yard drive that culminated with a SaRodorick Thompson 1-yard touchdown run that gave the Seahawks their first lead with 6:38 left in the game.

Green Bay pulled ahead for good on Nate McCrary’s 1-yard touchdown run with 1:56 remaining. McCrary’s touchdown capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive that included a 52-yard completion from Alex McGough to Jadakis Bonds.

Benny Sapp sealed the victory by picking off Holton Ahlers’ pass in the end zone with 13 seconds left.

McGough was the Packers’ third quarterback of the game. Sean Clifford, a rookie fifth-round pick from Penn State, went 8 of 12 for 46 yards.

Packers rookie kicker Anders Carlson made two field goals – a 43-yarder in the first quarter and a 57-yarder in the final minute of the first half – and had an extra-point attempt blocked. The Packers drafted Carlson out of Auburn in the sixth round to take over for Mason Crosby, the franchise’s career scoring leader.

Green Bay played most of its projected starters for the majority of the first half. Exceptions included cornerback Jaire Alexander, offensive tackle David Bakhtiari, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell wide receiver Romeo Doubs, outside linebacker Rashan Gary and running back Aaron Jones. Campbell also didn’t play last week because of an ankle injury and Doubs is dealing with a hamstring issue.

On th injury side Packers guard Royce Newman was slow getting up after a play in the fourth quarter.

The Packers open the regular season Sept. 10 at Chicago.
